A gift to President Obama

From Iranian Americans

This painting is a gift from the Iranian-American organization in Cupertino, California. It will be presented by Honorable Congressman Mike Honda via Ms. Laura Casas Frier, the president of the Board of Trustees of the Foothill-De Anza Community Colleges. The poem is by the Poet Saadi of Shiraz / Iran ,1184-1291 CE.

"Human beings are the limbs of one another as a whole,
Who in creation are of the one essence and soul.

When a limb is afflicted with pain,
Other limbs also uneasy will remain.

For one not sympathetic to others pain,
The name of human cannot be attained."

The art work was done on November 28, 2008. We, the members of the Iranian Federated Womens Club and Payvand Cultural School, affirm that the contribution of all is necessary for the success of all, and that our collective success is determined by following a shared vision shared as individuals, as a community, as a nation guided by a strong leadership.

This painting symbolizes the faith we place in President-Elect Barack Obama, who manifests our hope for the unity of many diverse people groups; we wanted to present him a gift that represents our humanity, not our politics, in the cause of moving our great nation forward.

As illustrated in the accompanying video, many non-artists contributed to this work. Just as it is not easy for artists to let others touch their art, it also can be difficult to entrust our lives and our values to another. This painting is proof that when the vision is clear and the visionary remains actively engaged, the successful outcome is ensured.

Hey Carpenter!

Any Iranian who is a member of the Republican party should go hang himself. Do everyone a favor, drop dead.

I would really like it if you contacted me so we can arrange a meeting. That way, we can determine who will be dropped.

Thanks for posting your version of Saadi's poetry. It is a much better and more suitable translation of this masterpiece.

The Republican Party in America

by Jamshid Niavarani IV (not verified) on

Iran-Contra Affair, American political scandal of 1985 and 1986, in which high-ranking members in the administration of President Ronald Reagan arranged for the secret sales of arms to Iran in direct violation of existing United States laws.

The chief negotiator of these deals was Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North, a military aide to the National Security Council. North reported his activities initially to National Security Adviser Robert C. McFarlane, the council's head, and subsequently to his successor, Vice Admiral John M. Poindexter. The sale of arms to Iran was initiated at the suggestion of the Israeli government with the dual goal of bettering relations with Iran and of obtaining the release of American hostages held in Lebanon by pro-Iranian terrorists.

In November 1986 a Lebanese magazine disclosed that the United States government had negotiated an arms deal with Iran. Later that month Attorney General Edwin Meese verified that millions of dollars from these sales had been sent to the contras in direct violation of the Boland Amendment, which Congress had passed in 1984 and which prohibited direct or indirect U.S. military aid to them.

The Republican Party in America aids the Theocracy in Iran.

Any Iranian who is a member of the Republican party should go hang himself.

Do everyone a favor, drop dead.

Simply put, Iranian Republicans are not human beings. They are people who will sell their own mother's for cheap beer.

Please don't mention Haji-Firuz

Don't you think it would be a good idea for Iranians to make sure Haji-Firuz tradition is kept from the new president for the next eight years?

Hezb-e Bad (The Wind Party)????

by Af. (not verified) on

Folks, why? What has he done for America? What has he done for Iranian-Americans? Please rememeber that the Islamic Republic was the gift of the Democrats (yes, Jimmy Carter) to the Iranian people, Obama just like Clinto won't do a darn thing to help the Iranian people.

Just one man's humble opinion.

God bless Iran and Iranians.

My version of Bani aadam...translation

by Ali A. Parsa (not verified) on

Many take a longer route to translate Saadi's Bani AAdam aazayeh yekdigarand poem and I respect them.
Considering the difficulty of cross-cultural translation, here is my translation of that universal piece of wisdom expressed by our beloved and uniquely pragmatic Persian poet and philosopher Saadi Shirazi of twelfth century A.D.

Regardless of color, creed and shape of our face,
We're members of one family-The Human Race.
If one member's in pain and I don't offer a solace,
In the Family of Man I don't deserve a place.

I have also translated Omar Khayyam robaiiat the way I perceive him. It is available under the title Rediscovery of Hakim Omar Khayyam at amazon.com
Cheers and good reading! A.P.
