BBC: At least 168 passengers and crew are feared dead after a Caspian Airlines plane crashed in the north of Iran, state media says. Wreckage was spread over a large area in a field in Jannatabad village, Qazvin province, about 75 miles (120km) north-west of Tehran, state TV said. The Tupolev aircraft was flying from the Iranian capital to Yerevan in Armenia, Iranian media said. The cause of the crash, which happened soon after take-off, was not known. "The 7908 Caspian flight crashed 16 minutes after its take-off from the International Imam Khomeini Airport," Iran's Aviation Organisation spokesman, Reza Jafarzadeh, was quoted by Iranian Press TV as saying. The Russian plane was built in 1987 >>>

Can you show statistics to back up your claim
by Fair on Fri Jul 17, 2009 09:41 AM PDTthat Iran is not doing worse than western countries?
Yes, airlines need to make a profit, but not at the expense of safety. It is the job of the country's aviation authorities to enforce safety standards.
Incidentally, this plane was bought second hand from Afghanistan in the late 90's, and it was in service during the Taliban time. Afghanistan today is buying newer planes than Iran.
And remember people used to make fun of the Shah for buying American "junk"? Where are those people today?

When Profit is the sole motive
by KouroshS on Wed Jul 15, 2009 10:27 PM PDTImplementing High standards in civil aviation and effective management aside, The situation in iran has become similar to what we see in USA with these regional airlines, where there are way too many of them competing to get some business, by throwing super cheap and affordabel tickets at people, and cut down deeply on maintenance costs, in order to stay profitable. Statistically speaking iran is not doing any worse than western countries in terms of the crash rate. With The US leading the way.
The common theme is the profit motive, where the companies would do anything they can, even putting lives at risk.
Dear Lilli
by Fair on Wed Jul 15, 2009 09:23 PM PDTThe Russian planes don't have mechanical issues any more than the western ones. They are just not as comfortable or efficient or quiet as the western ones. Those "few other poor countries" don't have as high a crash rate as Iran does. Like I said, the previous crashes in Iran have not been related to mechanical problems, but just sheer incompetence and mismanagement. If the operators of those aircraft and the government civil aviation agencies had high standards, none of this would happen.
I am sorry, sanctions are not to blame here. Look at Egypt which also has a low safety record, and has full access to American/European technology. They still suck. When the standards are low, they are low.
Before the revolution, Iran Air was one of the world's safest and fastest growing airline, it was one of the first in the world to fly the 747SP, and it was a certified maintenance center for PanAm and other foreign carriers. This was no accident, the management under Ali Khademi and the organization he built was first class. This is a matter of leadership and professionalism, something that is not valued under IRI. Less sanctions will not help this. I am sorry.

Not Fair!
by Lili on Wed Jul 15, 2009 06:52 PM PDTFair,
Nobody's denying the supidity of the Islamic regime--more like their lack of consciousness.
American made planes are not sold to Iran for 3 decades. Iran and few other poor countries are the only customers for Russian made planes which have the highest rating of mechanical issues. I know that Iranians do NOT like to fly those planes fearing for their lives--what do you have to say to that?
I don't blame America or any other country. I am only saying that we as Iranians should NOT encourage more sanctions against Iran. That's all!
Was This a deliberate act?
by 1 hamvatan on Wed Jul 15, 2009 05:45 PM PDTI have been reading that, Ahamadi's visit to Mashhad will create an event such as fake attempt to his life, so that they will have something to talk about on next Friday when Hashemi opens the Mosque.
This looks very suspicious to many.
Cheap shot at the wrong people
by Fair on Wed Jul 15, 2009 02:39 PM PDTSanctions did not cause this crash or others- IRI gov't mismanagement causes them! These are Russian planes, they are not subject to sanctions and all the parts and systems required for them are available to Iran. Also these same planes fly in other countries just fine. They are just not as comfortable or as quiet or as efficient as their western counterparts.
10% of all Tu-154 crashes ever were in Iran, killing 450 people. This is ridiculous, it just shows the extremely low standard in Iranian civil aviation today. With such mismanagement, you will see crashes with Boeings and Airbuses also. For example, one of these crashes was an air traffic controller making a mistake resulting in a midair collision. Another one was due to bad weather and the aircraft hit a mountain in low visibility, because the pilot and/or air traffic control screwed up in keeping the plane on the correct path and following a rigorous flight plan.
And you blame Iranians in DC area with green signs? You blame America for a Russian built plane going down in Iran which worries more about believing in Imam Zaman than being capable of doing your job? What does American have to do with this? How long are you going to blame other people for your own government's stupidity and incompetence?
Get Real.

Outrageous: Imposing Economic Sanctions against Iran
by Lili on Wed Jul 15, 2009 01:53 PM PDTIt's because of these incidents that we need to ask American gov't and the rest of the world to remove sanctions against Iran. Those Russian planes are really feared in Iran and nobody really wants to fly on those. They are extremely dangerous. Iran can't buy Airbus or other western made airlpanes.
I find it OUTRAGEOUS when Iranian protesting (especially in DC area) with their stupid green signs asking for more sanctions against Iran. Who paid those fools to say that? Sanctions cost lives. We should sign a petition to reverse sanctions against Iran to avoid these incidents. This is not the first crash with a Russian made plane.
condolences and reminder
by Fair on Wed Jul 15, 2009 12:38 PM PDTMy deepest condolences to all the victims' families.
Also, this is a reminder of regime's incompetence, mismanagement, and disregard for life of innocent Iranians. Iran Air used to be the world's fastest growing and safest airlines. Look at our pathetic air safety today, it is one of the worst in the world. Compare that to Emirates, who has had ZERO incidents in its history (it did not even exist until 1986). And then they brag about "we manufacture fighter planes and helicopters and passenger planes". They cannot even operate a routine civilian flight safely.
I agree with all the comments so far- instead of handing out huge wads of cash to hezbollah, hamas, bassijis to kill and intimidate those who have the "wrong" ideology, maybe they can use some of the immense oil wealth of our country to provide basic safety and transportation infrastructure for our people.
Or will Imam Zaman take care of that one for us too?

by Reza-Rio de Janeiro on Wed Jul 15, 2009 11:46 AM PDTCondolences to entire Iranian nation and our Armenian brothers and sisters who lost their people and loved ones in this very painful tragedy... May all those who were killed in this Tragedy rest in eternal Peace.
Islamic Republic is an all around a criminal regime and entity and has the blood of innocent Iranians on their EVIL hands.
May God answer these criminals in the right way and avenge the Iranian massacre in the past 30 years. Amen.
They did it again.
by alipournourbakhsh on Wed Jul 15, 2009 08:09 AM PDTEvery time the mullahs are in trouble they have to distract the Iranian population with killing a large number of us and portray it as an act of terror or Allah's will. Murder of innocent people means nothing to them. I know that these Russian planes are crap, but I also will not pass it by these bearded killers that they sabotaged the plane. It makes me sick.

Instead of hiring all these Basijis to kill people
by Mehrban on Wed Jul 15, 2009 07:35 AM PDTThey should hire some inspectors to check these planes before take off.
Yet Another Crime Against the Iranian People
by Anonymous Observer on Wed Jul 15, 2009 07:34 AM PDTSo, where's their aircraft building technology, with "Saegheh" fighter plane, etc.? Why do they have to buy these old Russian pieces of junk that keep falling out of the skies? Where's their superior aircraft maintenance capability? Or was that just another load of shit that they fed the Iranians and the world like their "elections"?
As always, the victims are innocent Iranians.
It's IRI's fault
by azadi5 on Wed Jul 15, 2009 06:47 AM PDTRather than spending Iran's money on supporting hezbola and other terrorist groups, maybe they should invest it on buying new planes. They can buy new planes from their good buddies in Russia replacing the old junk that they bought from them years ago. It would be funny if anyone blamed this crash on USA because of the trade embargo, as this was not an American made plane and didn't require American made parts for maintenance.
