IRIB is reporting that those who have not "signed up" for Etekaf one week in advance will be turned away from mosques! I bet there will be Basijis who will escort the unregistered motakefs!

The core of adversity & abomination
by eslam-zedai (not verified) on Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:53 AM PDTPlease do not associate Sufism with islam.
Sufism goes far back in Iran's history than islam or any other religion. Just refer to our literatures.
Humanity and moral are not discovery or invention of religions. Religions have used them to rise and then kill hundreds of millions. What an irony!
Stealing culture, science, art, etc. from other nations and labeling it as "islamic" is an old characteristic of islam.
islamic history claims that it has spread civilization throughout history around th world(alongside their massacres).
But my question is why islam's "rich" civilization stopped flourishing and spreading around - even domesticaly - once the Spanish put an end to their bloody invasions!!?? And since then, can anyone show me a technological, cultural, or political advancement which happens to be dedication of islam to the world!?

This regime has everthing to do wiith Islam
by RZ (not verified) on Tue Jul 07, 2009 07:52 AM PDTThis regime is the embodiment of a delusion called religion. Spread the word everyone: there is no tooth fairy, santa claus, allah, emame zamane (va farajesh)
BTW, i think there is a mistranslation: etekaf is not the same as etesab (disobdience) In fact these folks are everything BUT disobdient. Please correct.

This regime has nothing to do with Islam!
by Anonymous4654464564565 (not verified) on Tue Jul 07, 2009 07:03 AM PDTMullahs are only USING (or abusing)Islam as a means to rule and hold onto their power in Iran. I doubt very much that even they themselves truly believe in it!
That is why religion must be separated from running the affairs of state in Iran so that it cannot be abused and taken advantage of!
What is "faraje agha"?
by A2009 (not verified) on Tue Jul 07, 2009 06:57 AM PDTI need a new dictionary :-)
I had never heard of such things, the IRI has created a new language!
Delusion! Mass delusion!
by Iran_azad (not verified) on Mon Jul 06, 2009 10:37 PM PDTThe folks (hippies) that attend rock concerts usually express same transcendent experiences! :-)
When I was I Iran I did not know of any such trends. Take 3 days off go sit in mosque! State governments like California in US would love employees like that. They call it furlough (days off without pay)!
Human mind is an amazing thing. Not necessarily in a good sense. It can wrap around itself and confuse reality and fantasy. Myth and truth. Now we know how folks saw Moses part the sea or Jesus walk on water. Human mind is the best virtual reality machine ever made! Best of luck to them. But it seems we have a long way to go. We Iranians have to learn everything the hard way.
That's why we have a revolution every quarter of century. Hopefully God(!) willing a handful of more revolutions and we get there!
I cannot believe so many

What is next?
by SaeedKaf (not verified) on Mon Jul 06, 2009 09:10 PM PDTI got one: Fight Islam with Islam!
Show your defiance, in rajab, by throwing a superlong, bigass green sofreh eh abolfazl!
Now THAT'll show Khamenei how much we hate the theocracy, and how much we thrive toward democracy.
(Don't worry. I did an 'estekhaareh', and it turned positive. I am sure it will work out)
makes me sick
by asabani (not verified) on Mon Jul 06, 2009 08:32 PM PDTwhy even put this up? when you dont have a free press you dont have have to give them (IR propeganda machnine)the space. they play by diffrent rules(their own)
Thanks Nazy it was very useful! Ali, it's time 4 U to revisit
by gol-dust on Mon Jul 06, 2009 07:47 PM PDTIran. I didn't know what Etekaf was, but i got it after reading nazy's thorough description! Ali, I think you have been out of the main culture for too long, may be not as long as me (33 yrs), so it helps to reconnect by visiting home.
One problem I have w/many secular iranians like myself, is that they hate the regime, as I do, and they turn totally against islam without understanding some fundamental thing about the religion in general and human psychology!
it makes a lot of sense to me. I have been to Budhist/Hindu and Yoga retreats that are 10 days and you don't say a word. you eat very little (Ali, you WC problem is solved) get deep inside of you to see who you really are.
In Sufi, you try to find out more about your heart, love and humanity. All of that makes sense when you want to get spiritual. Now because of enmity to IRI, we have to trash this without really knowing what it is?
There are many Americans like Sean Penn, madana and so on who have or are practicing one of these eastern religions, but you don't make fun of them!
The world that we live in has become so materialist that we have forgotten about our own spirituality and have lost our inner soul. That's why there is so much drugs! instead we are attracted to the BMW, Mecedes or so on.
Discover your inner soul, it is a beautiful world inside you that you have neglected for far too long! Money alone won't bring happiness!
Even more confused
by Ali P. on Mon Jul 06, 2009 07:18 PM PDTHaving a low IQ doesn't help, but I don't seem to 'get' the strategy here.
The mosques are turning people away, maybe because they have a limited capacity, and not necessarily because of some plot to choke the opposition.
Most mosques are not that big, but for even 200-300 people, you need to provide water, food, sleeping area, toilets ( Do they even have showers in mosques?)
Three days in a packed mosque with fellow Moslems...in the middle of summer.
And we should be angry, because they are turning us away from such lovely gathering due to the bogus excuse that 'they don't have any room'??
That's it!!
Down...down with the Islamic Republic!!
You're all missing the point
by Reza1 (not verified) on Mon Jul 06, 2009 06:12 PM PDTIn my opinion the beauty of all these protests is the fact that people are using Islam against the Islamic Republic. All you people who come on the site and say, this is no good, I can't believe people are screaming "allah akbar" from their rooftops and it's all nonsense until people stand against islam, are missing the best part of this struggle.
You think all those kids who go on rooftops at nights and scream "allah akbar" are doing it for Islam? One thing we Iranians are known for is our appreciation for irony and if you guys are missing that point then you have lost your Iranian ways.
This is another example of how young people are using IR's own instruments against them. I for one commend them and wish them well. The only way IR will topple is from within and the only way you can do that is to pit Islam against Islam. IR has spend too much time shielding itself from the outside, it has lost touch with its rotting core. Using Hossien, Hassan and Imam Zaman against the Islamic Republic is the way to go.

etekaf??what the hell is that?
by 1 Hamvatan (not verified) on Mon Jul 06, 2009 04:05 PM PDTEtekaf, mtekaf all nonsense poly to get people to bring in people so the regime can legitimatize herself.
People should stay away from whatever the regime is saying, it only serves the regime's purpose and nothing more.
People are sick of all these thugs in the regime, time to clean up the country from these Islamic maggots.
Mr.Mossavi still is one of them? after what the regime did to the people?

by N a z y on Mon Jul 06, 2009 03:43 PM PDTEtekaaf is an optional Muslim ritual which had not been in practice for many decades before the Islamic Revolution.
Since the Islamic Revolution, and more specifically since Ali Khamenei became the Supreme Leader, Etekaaf has become more prevalanet, but only among super religious/hezbollahis and has received budgetary attention in the mosque expansion plans of IRI. The practice is that for 3 nights in the month of Rajab, people go to mosques and take a vow of silence, reflecting and praying.
The protest movement in Iran has been identifying occasions when they can be in public gatherings without the need for congregation permits which have been denied to them for a whole month. Much as people identified the Qoba Mosque ceremonies as a suitable place to meet without fear of a crackdown, the three days/nights of Etekaaf have been identified as a place where protesters should be able to go and congregate without fear of persecution.
Furthermore, many people are going to use the excuse for being on etekaaf for skipping work during what has been planned to be a week of strikes and work slowdowns.
The importance of what is happening here is that knowing this, the mosques are being closed down to ordinary people, and anyone who has not "pre-registered" for etekaaf is turned away. I guess these are brand new rules which require people to register for prayer in a mosque!
This report is important because it is giving all those protesters a message that if they show up at those mosques, they will not be admitted.
I think the nightly Allah o Akbars and any other religious rituals performed these days are mostly for civil disobedience.
I hope those kids are safe.
etekaf = strike
