" Rap is revenge for slavery"
by Marjan Zahed Kindersley on Tue Jul 21, 2009 04:27 PM PDTAs much as I admire and appreciate the amount of work and effort in this, is it really necessary to take up these tones of warrior and sexual rituals from West Africa for the past 20 odd years?
I'm not as extreme as Theodor Adorno, but I really do feel that lots is so "cheap" "entertainment" these days. Baez is an unfortunate victim of this documentary.
Adorno:" I believe in fact, that attempts to bring political protest together with "popular music - that is the entertainment music -are for the following reason doomed from the start.
The entire sphere of popular music, even there when there is dresses iself up in modernist guise is to such a degree inseparable from the 'Warencharakter', from consumption, from the cross-eyed transfixion with amusement , that -er- attempts to outfit it with a new function remain entirely superficial.
And I have to say that when somebody sets himself up, and for what reason......I find , in fact this song unbearable, in that by taking the horrendous and making it somehow consumable, it ends up wringing something like consumption qualities out of it "
sorry, I don't mean to pick on this in particular, but just about have had it with the torrent of superficial sentiments, soon forgotten in collective amnesia and onto the next bit of fashionable (remember Oscar Wilde)instant gratification.
The Frankfurter Schuhle were right about a lot of things....
Bite me! (;)
