In a rare independent nationwide survey before the June Presidential elections, Iranians of every political inclination are united in their desire for greater democracy, economic progress and better relations with the United States. While our uncensored poll shows incumbent President Ahmadinejad in the lead with a plurality of support, the survey also reveals that a second round run off against his closest challenger, Mir Hussein Moussavi, is likely. Steve Clemons (Director, American Strategy Program, New America Foundation and Publisher, The Washington Note), Terror Free Tomorrow President Kenneth Ballen and New America Foundation/Iran Project Director Flynt Leverett discuss the results of a New America Foundation/Terror Free Tomorrow poll ahead of the Iranian presidential election on June 12. Despite support for incumbent hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, most Iranians want better relations with the United States.

by babakkhoramdin (not verified) on Thu Jun 11, 2009 01:24 PM PDTyou have some good points....but i think the first option is not out of the question.....the only think the mullahs respect is force.....but, like u said, they are so paranoid that even spies have spies....and I heard khamenei had ordered a team to study how every revolution in history had started in order to nip anything in the bud before the people can overthrow them....perfect example is in 1999 when the students revolted. the mullahs killed and jailed a bunch of people to put down the revolt....any other country(besides china and n korea) the government would likely be toppled.
that is exactly shah's mistake...in trusting carter would have his "back"....right under his nose, they sent huyser to neutralize the army, so khomeini's goons would not be crushed.......in reality, THAT was our best shot at destroying the mullahs- before their cancer spread...if the shah had the guts to order khomeinis plane shot down, the borders closed, and the felestini terrorists captured and tried, etc....then we would not be in this position....with millions killed, displaced, trillions stolen/wasted, khoramshahr/abadan destroyed, etc.
javid iran and may we be free VERY SOON
What is the best to do; Participating or Not?
by Hamid F. (not verified) on Thu Jun 11, 2009 11:08 AM PDTThere is no doubt that what we see these days in streets of Iran is a good sign of moving toward democracy. However, if by seeing that we imply that we have true democracy, it is a bit of wishful thinking. We would have, if only the people would decided who to become president or member of parliament, and there were no filters to exclude candidates because a certain selected committee rejects their qualifications. But the question is, in this imperfect situation, what should we do? In my view there are three paths in-front of us:
1- Take up arms and fight against the regime.
2- Become disillusioned and not participate in this infant democracy.
3- Participate in it and move it forward.
The first option has been tried by many, specially at the beginning of the revolution, and we all know about its ineffectiveness and negative consequences.
By choosing the second option, obviously nothing changes. No one gives up power only because people refuse to participate.
However, there is hope by participating in it and trying to move it forward. I left Iran about 20 years ago, so I have seen the first 10 years up-close and personal. What I see now, is much better than when I left. So although we haven't reached true democracy, we have moved forward.
I do appreciate a higher level of democracy that many of us enjoy here in the United States, but let's not kid ourselves. Even here is far from true democracy. In Iran you can be elected only within the framework of Islamic Republic, and here only within the framework of either Democratic and Republican parties. In Iran Islamic Republic rules, and here money rules. If you have an idea which doesn't fit in any of the two parties ideology (or better said ,corporate interest), you cannot even get heard (e.g. Single-Payer health-care option). But we do participate and we have seen some changes in the past elections. Why not try it in our homeland?

What Vibrant democratic elections! I love it!
by Babak Khorasani (not verified) on Wed Jun 10, 2009 08:03 PM PDTKadivar you are apparently defining democracy as a state apparatus function. what you see in the streets of iran during these elections is the TRUE DEFINITION OF DMOCRACY. whether they support ahmadinejad or mousavi. the fact they are out in streets campaiging as freely as possible, they are debating, they are organizing, everything they are doing, this is democracy...every dictator in the middle east shoudl take note and allow their people to experience such vibrancy. i dont care what anyone says. these videos all speak against everything you guys preach. these STREETS we see day and night in youtube videos are PROOF iran has moved from its 2500 year monarchical dictatorial past. people are in streets PEACEFULLY debating, talking, discussing, exchanging ideas. 99% of people are rejecting violence. Anytime before in irans historical past if such large groups of people organized in such a manner the ruling order would crack down and view it as a threat. this just shows how close the people are to islamic republic. no threat. freely criticzing, talking saying whatever they want and government feels no threat, because it is of the people!

as far as this "video" this guy clemens is a joke, all these "pseudo-intellectuals" push for is to somehow legitimize the akhoonds and their corrupt, evil, and murderous regime. I'm curious why this guy and peanut carter don't say ANYTHING about the hundreds of thousands of political prisoners who have been imprisoned, tortured, murdered, etc.?????
I have a suggestion for these guys- force the akhoonds to hold FREE ELECTIONS so iranians can choose a secular democracy, vs. monarchy, vs. whatever else they want....and we'll see how fast the akhoonds will be kicked out of iran!

If you think Ahmaghinejad is really true to his promises listen to this. To have a healthy and sound political and financial system you should have freedom of speech. You also need to have an open and transparent financial system. Which of these has Ahmadinejad supported? Sure he plays the victim, talks the talk, but what has he done beside lying and exagerating his actions? The nuclear power was done before him attending his post. He has been given the country at its best financial times and still has let it sink while the oil the almost only income of Iran was at its highest ever.

An Ahmadinejad Victory would be an Embarrasment to Mahmoud
by Darius Kadivar on Wed Jun 10, 2009 09:52 AM PDTAn Ahmadinejad Victory would be an Embarrasment to Mahmoud ...
Mahmoud vs Ahmadinejad ( Hope you understood my Ironic tagline ? )
Statistically even a Victory by Ahmadinejad cannot be a lanslide victory given the dynamics involved. At worst it will lead to a run off and the other candidates will call on their supporters to vote for Moussavi.
After all the current debates regarding the need to change the foreign policy, I would even say that a victory of Ahmadinejad promising to continue the same failed policies would logically lead to further divisions between the ruling establishment and weaken the regime while empowering the people's demands for freedom and opening relations with America ( Which I approve Entirely).
I predict there will be a runoff between Moussavi and Ahmadinejad with the victory of Moussavi.
However the degree of the "populist" rhetoric of Ahmadinejad can be determinant on how the villiages could vote. Although the Washington Times seems to suggest that he is clearly losing support in Rural Iran :
//www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/06/AR2009060602177.html
He would be in a weak position to negotiate with America. Where as a victory of another smiling face will certainly be seen as an endorsement of the regime by the people at large and therefore of the Religious Revolution itself, forcing Obama to deal with the same crooks in determining our future.
Can You honestly see Obama put flowers on Khomeiny's Tomb in a Nixon Like Visit so much favored by the IRI lobbyists and actually applaude the gesture ?
I couldn't !
Speaking of Nixon's visit to China ... Remember Tienanmen ? When Did China Become a Democracy after that Historic Visit ?
