Omidreza Mirsayafi

Second Prisoner of Conscience to Die in Two Weeks

The death of an imprisoned blogger inside Evin Prison on 18 March, following the recent death of another prisoner of conscience, demonstrates that Iranian authorities are seriously neglecting the health of prisoners the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said today. The Campaign called on the Iranian Judiciary to immediately investigate and prosecute prison officials for their neglect and responsibility in these deaths.

The Campaign reminds Iranian authorities that under international human rights law, they are held accountable for the health and safety of prisoners.

“Iranian leaders have relegated the administration of the prison system to a group of incompetent and cruel officials who are showing their utter disregard for human life,” said Hadi Ghaemi, the Campaign’s spokesperson.

“If the authorities do not move quickly to hold negligent officials responsible, they are reinforcing impunity and the lack of accountability,” he added.

On 18 March, 29-year-old blogger Omidreza Mirsayafi died while in Tehran’s Evin prison. According to an account by Hesam Firoozi, a physician also imprisoned in Evin, Mirsayafi had taken extra doses of his medication. Firoozi’s account, as provided by the Human Rights Activists in Iran, notes that Mirsayafi suffered from serious depression. Firoozi was present during the initial stages of Mirsayafi’s treatment inside the prison’s medical clinic and reported that the prison doctors failed to provide proper care by not sending him immediately to a hospital to save his life.

Mirsayafi was prosecuted solely for his opinions expressed in his private blog. He was charged with insulting the authorities and sentenced to two years and six months in prison.

In an interview with the Campaign on 16 December 2008, Mirsayafi said his blog was completely private and was read only by a few of his friends. He also said that expert testimony by an Intelligence Ministry official during his trial emphasized this point and that he should not receive such a heavy sentence.

Mirsayafi’s lawyer, Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, told the Campaign that Mirsayafi’s sentence was rushed into implementation without proper judicial procedures and that he had not been notified officially of the sentence before its implementation.

“From the Judge who sentenced Mirsayafi solely for his peaceful opinions, to the prison medical staff who ignored his critical condition, a host of judiciary and prison officials are responsible for his death. Mirsayafi’s death is an indication of the cruelty of Iranian Intelligence and security agencies abusing the courts with the cooperation of the Judiciary,” Ghaemi said.

On 6 March, Amir Saran, a political prisoner serving an 8-year sentence for his political activities, died of a brain stroke. His family and associates have alleged negligence and lack of proper care by prison officials as the causes of his death.

Kaveh Jaan

Kaveh, there isn’t much more that I can say in response to the phony “phony buster” here.  I actually have a pretty good idea who it is, but let’s not even go there.  I think though, that most reasonable readers of this site have realized the “Zionist” labeling game.  I read comments about that all the time.  As far as most intelligent, none “cyber basiji” people are concerned, the jig is up.  We know what this gang is up to.  In a way though, it makes sense.  It works quite well for them inside Iran, where they immediately label all opponents as Zionist, Israeli agents and then they go after them.  Fortunately, they cannot do that here.  So, they do the next best thing: they go on sites like this and label everyone who disagrees with them as “Zionists” and Israelis.  It actually gets quite absurd at times, when they accuse the other person of being non-Iranian, and they even post comments in Persian and “time” the person’s response to see if he is really Iranian or an “Israeli” imposter!!!!!

As anyone who has actually read my comments (notwithstanding this yo yo below) knows, I am a life log Democrat and a big Obama supporter.  In fact, since 1992, I have been an active campaigner for every Democratic presidential candidate except, unfortunately, for Obama (due to work and family obligations ---although it does not appear that he needed my help!).  In fact, all you have to do is to go here:

//iranian.com/main/2009/mar/obamas-nowruz-message

and see my support for his new year’s message to Iranians.  (BTW, during the Clinton years, the same people called Clinton and his supporters "Zionists" and wanted a Republican in the White House....which just shows the depth of their political understanding).  Moreover, I challenge anyone, including this brain dead individual below, to find one comment that I made in support of an attack against Iran.  Much to the contrary, I have always stated my opposition to it.  So, it is sad that these people can go around and unfairly label people and portray them as the opposite of who they are.

When you come to think of it, these “Shaaban bi mokh’s” have much more in common with George W. Bush that I will ever have.  See, in their world, just like in Bush’s wacky world, there is no room for nuance.  A person cannot have different position on different issues.  It’s an all or nothing proposition, kind of like W.’s “with us or against us”.  You don’t like IRI, then you must be a Zionist Israeli who wants Iran bombed; otherwise, you would not have criticized the death of a blogger who died of torture at Evin.  You see how stupid that sounds?  Well, not to them.

Unfortunately, people like them have been running our country for the past thirty years, with no end in sight.  The good news is that these extreme views are not representative of the views of the majority of Iranians inside Iran.  This is just a marauding band of cyber hezbollahis on a mission, and we should just accept them as such.

apparently it's not possible to be jewish AND iranian...lol

it's sad really.  it's the same like-minded people who resort to name-calling and insults.  people like jaleho scare the shit out of me.  she's one step away from sewing up some yellow stars of david for your lapel.  and they call ME racist...LOL.

i'll leave it to the PC iranians to comment on the california iranians.  i've heard enough derision from them about the LA crowd especially.  i wouldn't want anyone to think i'm being biased...lol.

i've heard it all... i'm not really married to an iranian.  my iranian husband is a loser.  oh, and my personal favorite was the description of my marriage to an iranian as "my sexual relationship with an iranian".  oh, and i'm not really american.  OR i'm the typical racist american.  i'm ignorant (another personal favorite given by the site IRI leader who corrected my spelling.  if i took a weeks vacation i wouldn't have enough time to correct her mistakes but that's ok... typical hypocrisy).

so so sad.

What makes you think I'm apologizing for anything? My religious beliefs or lack thereof is my business and mine alone. I don't ask about anyone's religious beliefs either. As far as I'm concerned, one's religion is an extremely personal matter.

Don't speak for anyone else with your "we have read your comments" crap. Speak for yourself only or just shut up. What you know about me or what you think you know about me couldn't fill an eyedropper.

Am I a "bleeding heart"? No. But when I hear or read about someone being imprisoned then dying at the hands of these degenerates in Iran that people like you apologize for on a daily basis just because he doesn't agree to their backwards mentality, it breaks my heart, and it pisses me off.

What pisses me off even more is when mental midgets such as yourself think you have all the answers, when you don't even understand the question.

So do me a favor and spare me YOUR b.s., unless you plan on fertlizing my yard.

A Zionist Nazi? Oh, yeah, that's when you slap an Arab, then feel incredibly guilty afterwards, so you make him some nice chicken soup while berating him for not calling or visiting his mother more often.

You have got to tell me who called you a conservative right wing racist!! That belongs on a plaque or something, complete with examples of your virulent conservative racism, like marrying an Iranian and voting for a black guy.

I'm sure someone at the CIA reads all of these rants on his site and is just laughing his/her ass off.

I don't know where your opponents are, but I have most certainly read your points of view about politics before and though you all make a valiant effort, there is no way anybody can mistake Kaveh, AN, and AO for human rights bleeding hearts around here! The Israeli/Bush-Cheney politics you have supported over time, aimed for "surgical strikes" against Iran, continue to threaten millions of Iranian lives. Please spare us the rest of the b.s.

Kaveh, so are you not Jewish? What's up with apologizing for it?

AN, do you and Kaveh not live in Southern California? What's up with the 'LA Iranian crowd' bashing?

Dear "anonymous fish",

by MiNeum71 on

sometimes I come across your comments and enjoy them, no need to be sorry ;)

I´ve never been to L.A., and I rarely meet Iranians in Austria. I also understand this guy, very sad what happened, and I understand his frustration.

The Iranian culture is a joke.

You can find educated and barbarian people in every country. But, the differences concern 1) the proportion, and 2) the basic social knowledge of the people. It always depends on the qualified majority.

The more improved a culture is the merrier these social interactions work toward a civilized society; open-mindedness, tolerance and respect towards the right of others to their opinion and beliefs are the pillars of an improved society. In a civilized culture the qualified majority takes care of it´s women, minorities, criminals and animals.

Persepolis and Sa´adi are not Iranian culture, they are Iranian history. Culture is the the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group. It´s not possible to say "We do this and that but this is not our culture". These "this and that" build up the culture.

Women abuse (dominated, beaten, marital raped), child abuse (mistreated), minority abuse (harrased), criminal abuse (lashed, stoned and killed), animal abuse (maltreaded and slayed) are the attitudes, values, goals and practices of the qualified majority of the Iranians (in and outside of Iran), and they characterize the Iranian institutions, organizations and groups. Sad but true: This is the Iranian culture, very old but not improved.

-----

Just for your information (1): Women abuse rates (UN): 81% of Iranian wives have already faced domestic violence (slapped, beaten, choked, attacked with Knives) in the first year of marriage, 35% of them wanted to commit suicide, 9% of them tried it but failed, 38% of the Iranian women have faced sexual violence, 19,3% of pregnants were beaten.

Just for your information (2): Child abuse rates (UN): USA 1,23% p.a., Scandinavia 0,32% p.a., Iran 16,75% p.a.

Just for your information (3): Death sentence rate (AI): Iran 4,40 per million, USA 0,14 p.m., EU 0,00

Iranian.com is IRI incubator

by Amir Nasiri (not verified) on

Mullahs have ruled us for 30 years and they will continue to rule us for another 30 years.

Why? Iranian people are too sentimental, victim loving, passionate idiots who care most about themselves and family members.

Iranian living in CA and outside Iran I have one thing to tell you: Go to Hell. And STOP pretending you care about Iran and you hate the Mullahs.

99% of you hold an IRI Passport, travel to Iran and when you come back you bring the rugs other goods that have been made by gruesome child labor and while you have bribed 5-10 officials in the whole process (called corruption and bribery) a process that you the people have created and supported and love it.

The Iranian abroad and specially the Tehrangelisis Whores I have one message for you just stop pretending you are even Iranian.

For 30 years you have been humiliated, called names, discriminated by the whole world, while the Iranian people inside Iran were suffering under the cockroach leaders who have killed 100's of thousands of young man like this beautiful handsome son of ours, he is like my brother and many of him who have been murdered by these pests and bacterias who has infested our nation and you have been the true supporter.

You have let the government of Iran to auction and waste our countries natural resources to the world with no benefit whatsoever to its people.

You have let the Iranian government humiliate your mother and sister and you stood quite.

You let the IRI government and its agents to assassinate murder and kill our countries treasures such Fereydun Farokhzad, Bakhtiar and many more, and you cared about the type of car you drive.

Iranians don't deserve IRAN.

I have to give Kudos to the French, to the bangladeshi's to the Thais, to the Sri Lankans to the Indians toi the Chinese and people from Philipines who stood up numerous times and occasion to t to the greater powers and gruesome governments but they succeeded.

Iranian.com has been the heaven and the place for IRI supporters and its agents.

I know this post will not be published but who cares I know the man who is moderating is reading it and may be he gives a damn or he doesn't he knows the screw ups he and his kind have done against Iran, Iranian people.

I have no mercy for those who hold Iranian Passport, Travel to Iran and buy IRI products, you are worst than the Mullahs.

... I'm asking every friend of mine who sends a Norooz greeting, to include info about this young man, and if they want, a copy/paste of what he said in his weblog without necessarily condoning or condemning it. This way more people will know about him, and as I said before, show the people in power that they may be able to kill a man (or "have a man killed", if you'd like to be technically correct), but they'll never be able to kill his thoughts.

Tonight, as we're all celebrating Eyd, his family won't have one, and most importantly, he will never, ever see another Norooz. And he has done that for you and me.

I think we owe him that, at least.

WHERE IS THE MASS MEDIA?

by Ayatoilet (not verified) on

This has been happening everyday in Iran, it is not every two weeks that a person is killed for political beliefs or expressions. This happens on a daily basis without any coverage from the Mass Media. Human rights have become irrelevant. The world has become desensitized to criminal acts. It seems certain that there will never be any justice.

Is that right?

by tsion on

'other iranians will resent your pointing out the obvious. their regime sucks. no one knows it better than they. '

Maybe they should be pointing out this "obvious" matter a bit more? What I see is the loud mouth of the apologists of this regime and the almost total passivity of the other Iranians in the face of it. This site itself is a good example of this. It is evidently the mostly viewed website of Iranians (as an entire community) in the US, and it is clearly dominated by the apologists of this regime with the complete backing of its owner and those running it, as is evident by their one sided "moderations", ideological censorship and choice of news and titles. My comment is actually directly pointing to the title chosen by the owner of this site in the face of a clueless Western fool promoting a nice image of the same regime you just talked about:
//iranian.com/main/news/2009/03/17/roger-...

Yet the "rest" of the Iranians are as indifferent and passive as it can possibly be in the face of the picture that is being presented in their name in this country. I thought otherwise before, but hey, maybe they don't actually mind it that much? Why be more Catholic than the Pope, so to speak?

In any case, one of the reasons young innocent victims of this regime are murdered with such ease and at such rates is because of the way the "image" presented by ex-pat Iranians is totally highjacked by such apologists.
Again this site is the proof of this better than any other. And many many more, millions can eventually end up as victims if this system is allowed to move on to bring its innate nature to full fruition with such an image help.

No my dear. I am not being opportunist. At all.
I am pointing a clear finger of accusation at those who directly and indirectly are complicit in all such tragedies. If you like, it's my own little personal j'accuse, for myself and my own peace of mind. My conscience dictates it.
