Washington, DC (NIAC) – The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) welcomes Rep. Jane Harman’s retraction and clarification of her statement regarding the “separation” of Iran’s ethnic groups and regret for the concern it caused. [See video of her talk at AIPAC meeting]
“I was not and am not calling for the creation of ethnic tensions or separation in Iran – nothing would be less productive,” said Harman in a statement to NIAC. “Although my comments on Iran were taken out of context, I regret any concern they might have caused.”
“My point was that the diversity of views in Iran should be better understood in order for the United States to formulate the best strategy for persuading the Iranian government not to pursue nuclear weapons development,” Harman added.
The controversy arose from statements Harman made during the American Israel Public Affairs Committee annual conference. While answering a question about how to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, Harman said “The Persian population in Iran is not a majority, it is a plurality. There are many different, diverse, and disagreeing populations inside Iran and an obvious strategy, which I believe is a very good strategy, is to separate those populations.”
NIAC initiated a campaign Tuesday seeking a retraction from the California Congresswoman. Discussions were held yesterday between NIAC and Harman’s office.
“This is an important statement from Rep. Harman,” said NIAC Chairman Reza Firouzbakht. “It makes clear that while there are many opinions about how to address the Iranian nuclear challenge, some options are simply not acceptable.”
NIAC President Trita Parsi welcomed the retraction and the Congresswoman’s expression of regret. “Though we take exception to the idea that the statement was taken out of context, the important thing is that Congresswoman Harman responded quickly to retract it and stated clearly that she opposes creating ethnic tensions in Iran. This is a testament both to the Congresswoman’s openness and to the increasing political engagement of the Iranian-American community.”

Back-Padelling...
by aaminian on Fri May 22, 2009 10:22 AM PDTHarman is not sorry for what she said; she's sorry because she got caught. For far too long American politicians have made disrespectful and plain racist remarks about Iranians; finally, after some 30 years, there is an Iranian lobbying group (NIAC) with ever-increasing power in DC that is putting an end to these sorts of unjust practices. I am sure Harman wasn't aware that NIAC existed when she made those comments.
Thank you, Dr. Parsi, for all your invaluable efforts.
She is in AIPAC pocket!
by Anonymou__ (not verified) on Fri May 22, 2009 10:19 AM PDTShe just revealed her intentions in that meeting. She can retract as much as she wants but she and her AIPAC buddies have no good intention for Iran and no one else. Zionism knows no shame!
It was revealed by CIA that she got caught on the phone trying to get AIPAC members spying for Israel off the hook in return for favor in congress.
Good work, but NIAC losing credibility-not a public retraction!
by verytass on Fri May 22, 2009 09:23 AM PDTDon't get me wrong this is good work by NIAC. But, it seems to me they called her and she said something on the phone. She is a politician and of course she is going to say that. However, there is no voice recording or youtube video of her retracting nor she has put anything on her website retracting the statement.
In the meanwhile NIAC is over-blowing their accomplishment which harms their credibility in the long run. Come on, NIAC set a higher standards!
We are divided many times.
by Amir Sahameddin Ghiassi on Fri May 22, 2009 09:23 AM PDTWe have been divided many times, because of forgein powers. Azarbajan is divided, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Bokhara, Samarghand and so on; we were a united power, but now we are divided into many small weak countries, so the united powers can misuse us. We should be united again and to be indipendent and stay on our feet. We should be united like Europe, or America again, so we will have more possibilities and our people should not be physical workers in the first or second world. I hope that our leaders understand this point and try to build a union again. Love and Unity , Respect and Education , Freedom and production should be our goals. America is united, Europe is united, but we are not and buisiness people are trying to make us weaker and weaker, so they can robb us more and more.
Sorry....I simply don't buy her "retraction"
by Kaveh Nouraee on Fri May 22, 2009 09:22 AM PDTShe already put her thoughts out there. She is only taking it back because she was caught, and put under pressure by a group of people (us) whose clout and power she grossly underestimated.
Like Trita Parsi, I take exception to the idea the statement was taken out of context. This woman meant every single word of what she said.
She is an extremely dangerous individual, and is under investigation by the FBI for, among other things, lobbying the government on behalf of AIPAC in exchange for AIPAC lobbying Nancy Pelosi to name Harman as chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
Ali P., we truly didn't jump the gun. When you get the chance, do a little research on this woman. You'll soon realize that she in fact put her entire foot in her mouth.
Just remember, she is up for re-election next year.
NIAC is a great organization
by Davood_Banayan on Fri May 22, 2009 08:03 AM PDTAmericans for a Democratic Republic in Iran.
NIAC is one of the few organizations that help Iranians and Iranian Americans.
In over 30 years after the Iranian Revolution I have never seen Iranian opposition groups in the United States help in any fashion the cause of Iranians and Iranian Americans.
NIAC and several other organizations that have been very vocal since the post 9/11 days are the only avenue for people who are immigrants or children of immigrants from Iran.
I remember when National Geographic renamed the Persian Gulf the "Arabian Gulf", NIAC was the organization that pushed the hardest for the magazine to correct the matter.
What I don't understand is that after 30 years the most useless voice of Iranians in the United States have been Reza Pahlavi and the Rajavis. Mr. and Ms. Rajavi along with Reza Pahlavi have been the most detrimental to Iranians. Reza holds an American Green Card along with citizenship of Monoco, Maryam Rajavi is a French citizen. None of these individuals hold valid Iranian documents.
It is high time that Mr. and Ms. Rajavi and Reza Pahlavi once and for all support the June elections in Iran. That is the only option.
It is high time for direct talks between the Iranian government of Ayat'Allah Khamenei and President Hussein Obama. This is the only way.
God Bless America.
"The statement was taken out of context"
by Ali P. on Fri May 22, 2009 07:15 AM PDTShe claims.
I forgot what she said exactly.
That "my point was that the diversity of views in Iran should be better understood in order for the United States to formulate the best strategy for persuading the Iranian government not to pursue nuclear weapons development", keh aibee nadaareh. Bar pedareh monkeresh la'nat!
Did we jump to the gun, or did she really put her foot in her mouth?

We can bring change if our voices are united
by iraj khan on Fri May 22, 2009 06:27 AM PDTThis is an important lesson for all of us. Many thanks to all Iranians who took their time and sent their comments to congress woman Jane Harman. Many thanks to NIAC for organizing and representing us against hatemongers.
To NIAC what about human rights violation comitted by IRI
by HATEIRI (not verified) on Fri May 22, 2009 06:15 AM PDTThis is great news. Officials like her need to resign for their stupidity and ignorance.
However;I wish NIAC would do the same thing to the terrorist official who have a terrorist camp in Washington DC for example on the day when Omid Mirsayefi or Zahra kezemi were murdered in the hands of these cockroaches.
NIAC can not ignore the human rights violation committed by these terrorist against Iranian people.
NIAC has always failed to provide an alternative approach of how to deal with these terrorist regime.
I am against a military solution but I am for change and overthrow.
Thank you
by Souri on Fri May 22, 2009 06:06 AM PDTGlad to see that she (and the world, by the same token) finally realised what a big mistake she did. Although this is not the first time we hear absurdities from the American Politician and it probably won't be the last time neither!
Thanks for sharing.
