Now YOU, as an Iranian citizen, which constitution do you recognize as legitimate?
The solution comes from your uncluttered answer.

by wow! (not verified) on Mon May 25, 2009 04:29 PM PDTI am amazed at your foresight then. It seems like the devil put a spell and deceived everyone but a few, and we see the end result of that uneducated vote today: 4 million run away self-exiled and another 66 million dreaming of running away, separating, or having to tolerate the daily oppression; even the most ardent islamists cannot tolerate living under IRI but run away to spread their propaganda for the regime from outside rather than bothering to walk the talk.
The majority voted for hitler, out of lack of education, being naive, not knowing what islam really was, or maybe fear.
At least one person in this video, the lady at the beginning is wise enough to have doubts and questions what IRI is.
That's an easy question

by Parham on Sun May 24, 2009 09:21 PM PDTExcept they didn't stamp shenasnamehs with red or green stamps. The vote wasn't known that way.
The only way to find out was to look at the papers in the hand of the voters, that even if folded inwards, would let out the color of the vote.
The other way was to look to see who was writing things on the paper, because people were allowed to say what system they wanted (what a joke!) on the corner of the paper if they were voting no.

Red vs. Green
by azadi55 (not verified) on Sun May 24, 2009 07:28 PM PDTI was too young to vote back then, but I remember when my dad and grandfather and uncles voted they proudly displayed the red stamp in their shenasnameh after the voting, meaning that they voted NO, as opposed to those who chickened out and voted for IRI just so their shenasname would not have the red stamp. yes, that's why they got a lot of votes, basically by intimidating tactics like this people feared the consequences of not voting for IRI, and look where that fear got us today. Bunch of dahaties and cowards brought this cancer to our country.
Euphoria
by Nifky (not verified) on Sun May 24, 2009 05:30 PM PDTYou can't blame the people, they got caught up in the Euphoria of change.
Just like how we experienced Euphoria of Obama.

Self Destructive, Naive, Timid & Pretensious
by indigestible critique (not verified) on Sun May 24, 2009 04:29 PM PDTThe referendum took place just few months after revolution and this clip shows how mullahs managed to establish an intimidating dictatorship in such a short time. Woman's hejab was not mandatory yet!
Shah was too good to be true. We deserve having bunch of ro'zeh-khoon ruling us.
Our "intellectuals" thought and still think that their insight toppled the monarchy!! Yeah right!!
Why then their powerful and intelligent minds stands cripple against the lowest minds of our society?
If the intellectuals and "people" were the drive, why don't they give it a try again?
So, as long as we are what we are, nothing will change.
Quote a red Indian; "We had to be better fighters"
And we are not any near to what they actually are.
Iranians need to exercise a little bit of patriotism for a time being rather than following bankrupted left and right doctrines.
Man, we love to gurgle other's bulls..t, don't we? Do you remember the months prior and after revolution and all those stupid books Iranians hysterically were memorizing in order to show off among family and comrades?
I know, it's a bit harsh but it's healthy to feel guilty and I feel better by blaming our culture as the ONLY reason that brought us this suffering.

by Ali P. on Sun May 24, 2009 06:34 PM PDTYes, Rahimi's letter got famous. I remember his article "Why I am opposed to (an) Islamic Republic", in khaandaneehaa.
But I think you are mistaken about his death. He died a few years ago, when he fell from his roof, when he was fixing his satelite dish, from what I understand.
I voted NOOOOOOOOO
by mahmoudg on Sun May 24, 2009 03:57 PM PDTI was 18 and my first vote cast. As a youngster I knew what garbage was in the Islamic regligion. 20 million morons who voted then now perhaps realize the mistake they made!!!! and if they don't then they deserve what they got. Now we have to rely on the Freedom fighting forces of America to save Persia from Islam.

by Parham on Sun May 24, 2009 02:20 PM PDTJust listen carefully to what he says. He changes his mind a few times from when he starts talking to when he finishes! And then he decides for voting yes in the end...
Also, at the time, his type of persona represented the educated middle class... There were SO MANY like him who went out and voted yes without even knowing what the Islamic republic was.

Parham jaan: What did you mean by " I think in my head, he has represented/symbolized one of the major reasons why we had the IR in the first place for the past 30 years"? I didn't catch what exactly you meant.
From what I remember, ther were those who were optimistic about the future of Iran, and those who were very pessimistic. The firing squads and Islamic mobs had already slaughtered hundreds, and many were fearful .
No one knew who would be the Revolution's next prey.
The fear of being 'traced' was very real, though I don't think anyone ever was.
The wisest and bravest person in this video was the lady in the beginning of it( the wife of the tie wearing man, who was voting "Yes"). I wonder where she is today :-)
Those who knew
by Nina1 (not verified) on Sun May 24, 2009 01:50 PM PDTThis is one of the rare reactions against voting for the IRI on 1979. The courageous Dr. Mostafa Rahimi (an eminent intellectual, writer, translator, and judge) openly expressed his opposition to IRI writing this letter in the newspaper Ayandegaan on Jan. 1979. After the publication of his article he was jailed and few years later committed suicide.

How about "IRANIAN"s would beginn to fight for democracy just in the area they live? For example in the unites States and elsewhere in the western world? I admire Mr. nevid kermani since he has begann - as it was to read in "IRANIAN" to fight for total secularity in Europe where he lives and as result he did not recieve an special present. In regard to voting, i voted with yes. many million other Iranians did the same. Today is again a day of happiness and celebrations. Khordad 3rd is the day of Khorramshahr. That is today.

by hamsade ghadimi on Sun May 24, 2009 01:16 PM PDTi voted yes. and within a year i had changed my mind. i was young, not knowledgeable about the plans that khomeini and his 'dar o daste' had in mind and basically didn't have any foresight whatsoever. you also need to know an important issue regarding this refrendum (not an election). it was a yes or no decision. those in favor turned in a green ballot, those against iri had turn in a red ballot. it was unashamedly rigged. as you know green stands for islam, and red stand for either communism or bloodshed. they also reminded everyone that if they did not vote for iri, the same thing that happened during mosaddegh's era would happen again: the shah will come back and everything would be even worse than before the revolution. people were naive to think that they just would be 'locking' the result of the revolution (end of shah's regime) and there'll be a more democratic process and people would eventually agree on a preferred form of government. how wrong all those people, and i, were.
80% Yes, 20% No!
by Concerened- Iranian (not verified) on Sun May 24, 2009 01:15 PM PDT1979 was really a different time in the world and especially for a Third world country like Iran with majority of her population who socially, mentally and emotionally were not so evolved as more open and modern nations around the world at that time!
Unfortunately, technology was not as advance as it is in NOW days! So called News and Informations were exclusivly prepared by EVIL sources in the West that absolutely did not have the best intentions for Iran and Iranians at that time and directly wanted to suck all of our precious wealth and resources out of Iran and still continue the same shameful behavior towards us with a different clothes on!
These sources of media and information were so evil and corrupt that consequently left the under-educated and under-informed people of Iran at the time with No other choice but to trust with their EMOTIONS a filthy lier and a Foreign backed Psycho angent like Khomeini and Co. !!!
Well, Khomeini and Co. turned their back on Iranian people and Iranian national and international interest right away by giving only TWO possible choices to Iranians during a staged out election...
Islamic Republic, Yes or No ?! (what a joke!)
With very fearful consequences for Iranians who would even attempt to say NO which at the end their vote would have not counted for any positive change anyways!
In their staged out and pre-planned Evil play, the Evil I.R. with their instructions from their Evil foreign bosses and instructors, even went as far as creating a deliberate shortage of food in the country (prior to Iraq war)to create food copouns that you would have to get from local mosque or revolutionary "Committe" to buy the most basic food needs (Bread, eggs, milk, meat, chicken and etc.) by providing them a proof of a stamp on your BIrth certificate (shenasnameh) that you had voted in their one sided and evil election!!! Brilliant but very Evil!!!!
In the first days, weeks and months of revolution before the election , with the direct instructions from their Foreign bosses, Khomeini and I.R. killed so many qualified Iranians who could have positivly contributed to keep Iran and Iranians safe, successfull and happy!!!
After I.R. swept the election by the YES vote and demanded obidience from all people, Khomeini and I.R. turned their backs to their Foreign bosses who brought them to power in Iran in the first place!!!
That is exactly why Iran was attacked by Saddam/Iraq yet another time by yet another set of foreign instructions from the bosses in the west who felt they were betrayed and punked by Khomeini and Co. !
Meanwhile, 30 years has past and Iranians are still hostage in their own country to Evil I.R. regime who still tries to desolve Iran in a Fanatic Islamic culture without real success!!! As confused and battered Iranians have been through out their history we have still managed to keep our Iranian and Persian Identity after 2500 years and still to this day!!! This time around us Iranians have become more educated in majority and are much more informed due to an inevitable progress in technology and information delivery amongst masses around the globe!!!
So Watch out I.R.!!!! Iranians are coming out of their defensive positions but this time with more information and knowledge!
Your days are numbered! mark my words!!!

by Parham on Sun May 24, 2009 01:08 PM PDT... whose Belgian mom went ahead and voted "yes", just to be on the safe side. The same lady (and her family) left Iran to go and live in Belgium right afterwards, perhaps a few months later.
I'll also never forget that guy in the beginning of the clip wearing a tie, sitting with his wife and kids on that bench... I think in my head, he has represented/symbolized one of the major reasons why we had the IR in the first place for the past 30 years ever since I saw this video first. Never mind the uneducated, illiterate class you see elsewhere in the video...
One interesting thing no one ever talks about is the almost comical way this was done -- as foul as it was: Green for yes and red for no, etc. I wonder if ANYTHING like this has ever taken place anywhere in the world previously. Only in Iran, again, unfortunately...
The sad part is I'm sure many people will do the same thing even now for the same reasons as 30 years ago, like being afraid (and scaring others) of being traced, etc. To think that some of us actually fight for democracy for these same people... And I know many...

This is a sad reality of Iranian character.
by Rostam - e - zaal on Sun May 24, 2009 10:29 AM PDTThis little piece of film is a sad commentary on the Iranian character that proves the Iranians tend to act with emotion versus logic, make uninformed decisions based on hearsay and not think for themselves. For that reason, and until such time that we have a leader with vision we will continue to suffer.
I guarantee EVERY ONE of those featured in this piece has suffered and will now eat their words and swear at the IRI. Off course that is only if they admit they voted for the IRI and not blame the former regime for making them vote the way they did.
