A lone student at a gathering of the country's academic elite took the unprecedented step of criticizing Leader Ali Khamenei in his presence on Wednesday morning, according to the Office for the Preservation and Publication of the Works of Grand Ayatollah Khamenei and opposition news sites. The young man, identified as 'a mathematics student at Sharif University and a winner at the International Mathematics Olympiad' by Mowjeh Sabzeh Azadi, made his remarks after the official speakers had completed their speeches and before Khamenei was to make his address. The gathering at Khamenei's complex in north Tehran preceded the 3rd National Conference of Young Elites. The student spoke for close to 20 minutes despite the protests of some of the spectators. As Khamenei looked on, he critiqued the state radio and television networks; the stifling security climate surrounding the press; the inability to voice criticism against the Supreme Leader; and the power structure in the country embodied by the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts, according to Mowjeh Sabzeh Azadi >>>

by Reza-Rio de Janeiro on Mon Nov 02, 2009 02:46 PM PSTThank you Madam...
I did send Fareed Zakaria an e-mail and with all the links attached about Mahmood Vahidnia ...
It is important for all Iranians to do so as well... Maybe, with many Iranian's e-mails, he would consider such coverage and exposure to help Iran and Iranians again!!!
Fareed Zakaria has been one of the only Journalists who has called on I.R. regime to Free Maziar Bahari (Newsweek journalist). I am sure his covarage was helpful to some extend...
Hope this helps Iran and Iranian's quest for/toward Freedom and Justice a step further!

There is no doubt about it.
Such an happening shows that in the theocracy there is freedom of speech and expression.
It is all a game by the theocracy to continue business as usual.
Don't be fooled.
As a person who has been fighting for the freedom of the Iranian people for over 37 years I can tell you that this news is fake 100%.

WHY WOULD THIS BE STAGED
by tqa81 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 02:53 PM PDTIf i was a government official and i wanted to stage the situation i would get someone to ask a question that is a non-question. Why would the government want to stage a situation where it would put itself in an embaressing situation.

Vahidnia allegedly denies being imprisoned
by FG on Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:34 AM PDTAlef News carries a purported interview with mathematics student
Mahmoud Vahidnia, who challenged the Supreme Leader with a series of
questions on Wednesday. Vahidnia denies that he was arrested after the
incident.
So does that suggest the whole event was staged after all? Not necessarily. There are several possibilities.
1. The Alef News report lies.
2. Alef News did not lie. However Vahidnia cooperated after death threats to his family and threats of being personally beaten, raped, tortured and executed.
3. Most probable: The regime was caught in a double surprise that inhibited action in both cases. The last thing it needs just before November 4th is another Neda. As in that case, we'd see posters and buttons of Vahidnia's people in the hands of demonstators--not a bad idea no matter which theory is correct now because of what it says about the public's attitude toward the Supreme Leader these days.
Under Theory #3 the regime backed off for the same reason it has so far failed to arrest Karoubbi (""guilty" of similar provocations and worst).
If Vahidnia's speech caught Khamenei and his regime by surprise, what conclusions could it draw from Surprise #2: the huge public enthusiasm and delight over it. Consider the number of viewers (5,500) drawn to the origininal article
at this site alone within 24 hours after it appeared. How often do you see that? What does it say about the public mood?
I'd say it demonstraes both the Supreme Leader's immense "pie in the face" unpopularity and a huge public thirst for another hero. Considering the horrors it has inflicted on so many others for m much less, the regime would hardly let such "offenses" go undrr ordinary circumstances. Like Karoubbi's statements, Vahidnia's actions have made him too visible to crush easily. In either case nothing would do more than the arrest of either man to give the regime more than it can handle, especially on November 4th.
If the regime really wanted to stage a demonstration that is has become newly converted to tolerance of dissent, a far easier and visible way would be to end censorship, open all trials to the public and release releasing all political prisons (Politicians, human rights spokesmen and journalists). Without doing that, what sense would it make to stage an incident like this?
A tale of two Mahmouds
by Fair on Sat Oct 31, 2009 09:51 AM PDTAmazing the difference between these two Mahmouds. One who gives it all up for his people, and the other who robs his people, and uses all those riches he has plundered to kill and rape and torture his own people.
This is another example, a very spectacular one, of Iranians after all the pain and suffering and oppresion we have gone through, proving with their actions:
Irani Meemeerad
Zellat Nemipazirad
Once again, Iran has proven that it is the land that never stops producing heros and selfless champions who dare to do the impossible, no matter how much the thugs try to suppress them. Iranians all over the world should today be prouder than ever of who we are. I certainly am.
Khamenei this message is for you and your lapdog AN: We are coming. You are personally responsible for the safety of this person, and will have to answer for any harm whatsoever as well as all other of your crimes when your trial is held. We will never forget, and will support Vahidnia and all the Vahidnias among us. Get ready, we the people of Iran are coming for you. All the rapist criminal Pasdars in the world will not help you in the end.
And for those who put down Iranians in the US Europe and elsewhere I have this to say: Your attempt at dividing us Iranians will fail. Iranians in Iran and outside Iran are ONE and we are united for ONE cause:FREEDOM. We are the same people. Iranians abroad also do a lot, and we need every Iranian to do everything they can, however little. Many Iranians abroad today are the Vahidnias that were in Iran yesterday.
Today, the only divide amongst Iranians is the following: the divide between Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (which does not even have the word Iran in it) and the people of Iran. Your diversionary attempt to create other divides where they don't exist will not work anymore. Game OVER.

by Mariam Amiri on Sat Oct 31, 2009 03:34 AM PDT"It looks staged to me. He looks very much like a Hezbollahi. "
WTH? His evidence for this being staged is that Mahmoud Vahidnia "looks like Hezbollahi" (thats seriously a very weak argument to say the least). The guy looks like an average Math/Natural Sciences university student in Iran.
Anyways, if it makes you feel any better, Mahmoud's colleagues and friends from Sharif University have been blogging that, after the meeting with Khamanei, he has been under custody of the Sepah [IRGC] and no one has heard anything of him since.
OnlyIran, the Shah's critic was no stooge!
by Nousha Arzu on Sat Oct 31, 2009 01:32 AM PDTI believe you're talking about Parviz Nickkhah, and he was no phony critic of the former regime. In fact, he was part of a communist group that tried to assasinate the Shah -- there were a total of 16 of them, who stormed the Royal palace, and Nickkhah, was their leader. There was a very bloody clash, and Nickkhah was arrested and sent to prison.
While in prison, he read about the White Revolution and turned a new leaf, and basically bought into what the Shah was trying to accomplish in Iran. The Shah commuted his sentence, and he was let out in one year, I believe. Later on, Nickkhah was able to move up the ladder and become the head of the national tv and radio in Iran.
Upon the revolution, Khomeini summarily executed Parviz Nickkhah -- imagine that, it was the mad mullah who executed the very man who had tried to assasinate the Shah. The Shah didn't do it, but it was done by the IRI.
This is perfect proof that the Shah was NOT a ruthless man -- if it had been Saddam Hussein in the place of the Shah, Nickkhah and his entire family would have been brutally tortured and executed.
In the Shah's Iran, Nickkhah was given a 4-year sentence, which was commuted after serving one year. And thereafter, Nickkhah was able to turn his life around and make a damn good living within the system that he was hellbent on destroying, so much so, that he tried to assasinate the Shah by storming his palace.
LONG LIVE THE GLORY OF KUROSH
Several things suggest this was NOT a staged regime event
by FG on Fri Oct 30, 2009 11:21 PM PDTAlmost all praise his bravery with two exceptions that suggest it was a staged regime scheme. While there are very good reasons to be suspicious of the regime, conspiracy theories can go too far even when aimed at a deserving target capable of any crime. My reasons for that conclusion:
1. Everything it has done since the election and afterward has demonstrated clumsy, heavy-handed stupidity. Instead of reducing the number of dissenters, its actions expand the opposition. Since when have they gotten so subtle and clever? Can one imagine Jafari, Ahmad Khatami, Janatti or Khamenei contriving such a staged event?
2. Consider Vahidnia's arrest by the Revolutionary Guard and his disappearance since. Such a move would run contrary to the purpose of a staged event. If you accept the "staged regime event theory, you must assume that Vahidnia is now being treated to love, kisses and candy by IRCG thugs? I can't imagine that.
3. Details of Vahidnia's speech contradict the "staged event" theory.
Check out the exerpts below in which someone who was present describes the position Vahidnia took. Basically he suggests the Supreme Leader had to be aware of horrific crimes against protestors and that such crimes could not have occurred without the Supreme Leader's strong approval. In other words, the Supreme Leader was at best incompetently oblivious to what was going on but more likely approved of all the crimes against protesters.
EXCERPT:
Vahidnia denounced state radio-television's skewed coverage of the post-election events and the character assassination of popular figures. He reminded the participants that the head of the state media is named by the Supreme Leader. 'The radio and television networks operate under you and you name the head of the broadcaster. Either the broadcaster is acting this way according to your orders or you are not overseeing it,' said the student, according to the Voice of America. The Sharif University student also regretted the closure of opposition newspapers.
Vahidnia bluntly declared that the Leader should be open to criticism and that Khamenei's entourage had turned him into an idol, according to Mowjeh Sabzeh Azadi. An eyewitness at the event reported that the young man said, 'When you, who are a father figure, treat your opponents in a certain manner, lower-level officials display the kind of behavior that everyone knows about and everyone knows about what occurred in the prisons.'

Bravery breeds bravery
by Ashkan on Fri Oct 30, 2009 08:13 PM PDTA courageous individual indeed. This kind of bravery is the reason that I am optimistic that the ayatollahs are on their way out. All the intimidations, arrests, killings, and rapes has not silenced the youth of Iran. The mullah's should be afraid.
In the past 30 years, nothing has shaken the foundation of the ayattolahs more than the youth of Iran with their bare hands and with their lives. The ayattolahs are an Iranian problem and it is quite clear that the Iranians know it and are in the process of resolving it. It is just the matter of time.

This reminds me of the soldier who criticized Rumsfeld.
by Anonymouse on Fri Oct 30, 2009 02:39 PM PDTWhat was Rumsfeld's response? That you go to war with the equipment you have. And what was his boss' (Bush = Khamenei) response? That the soldier asked the right man!
In this case he was allowed to speak because he kept his hand up to ask a question. He didn't do anything else, just kept his hand up. So once the cat is out of the bag there is no going back.
Now regime is in a lose lose situation. If they say this shows freedom, then they have to show it to the whole population and give an answer which they don't have. If they touch him, he'll be a much stronger and louder voice of this movement and people will rally behind him. Basically his courage screwed this regime and left them no solution, especially since he is a nokhbeh! Check mate!
Everything is sacred.
