Siamak Aghaei

"Ascending Bird" traditional Persian folk melody

Traditional Persian folk melody by Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble members Colin Jacobsen and Siamak Aghaei. "Ascending Bird" recounts the mythical tale of a bird's attempt to fly to the sun. After failing twice, on the third attempt the bird loses its physical body in the radiant embrace of the sun, a metaphor for spiritual transcendence. www.silkroadproject.org

Father of Piano

I was told by a Santour Teacher that Piano evolved form this instrument.

Nicely done piece of music

Santur

Santur sounds great 'cause the sound lingers after the hammer hits the string. It is just beautiful! I wish the guy played a longer number.

Thanks for sharing!

I wonder how this music would do...

by alborz on

...without YoYo Ma's name!  I find it nothing short of nerve racking and at the risk of dating myself, I have to say that at one point it sounds like nails screeching across a black board.

The only pieces from Silk Road that are remotely memorable happen to be those that have not strayed from the authentic melodies and limited the number and type of instruments involved in the piece.

I for one, consider this sampling as experimental.

PS - my comment is directed at the second video and no offense is intended towards the musicians or the previous  commentators that considered this as "uniquely beautiful" and "beautiful".

Great piece! Thank you for posting this lovely video, and introducing Siamak Aghaei's music to us!

I loved YoYo Ma playing with the Brooklyn Riders...I had seen the ensemble performing with Kalhor and it was also a wonderful experience.
