Concise & Comprehensive
by afyoun on Mon Dec 13, 2010 07:01 AM PSTGiving your daughter away at age 13 reveals the local culture you live in. So, with a bit of logic and simple mathematic we can conclude that her mother also might have been married at the same age ..., let say 15 (if not younger, look at her mother face(02:10) and father face(01:53) and guess their age yourselves. So, where were we? Oh yeah, her mother age should be around 28 now. Within a year or two her daughter will "definitely" give birth to a child (if not two) which makes the bride's mom at age 30 a granny. And if this 13 years old bride and her husband cook the same fate for their beloved daughter, then the 30 years old granny will be a great granny by age 43! So, the paedophile culture sets forth and lives on - handed by fathers to their sons. A culture promoted by all religions throughout history. Even Sargord's in-line ancestors were following that very strictly, as he himself stating that. But from his comment, I can't really tell whether he's a pro or con.
Anyhow, look at the bride's face (04:22 and 05:10). Those (bitter)smiles are worth thousands words! And those are the only smiles you see on her face in this film.
Without religions, the human race could be far more advance than it is now. The mistake we hopefully do not repeat and regret it again.
As Ari mentioend, "The music's carefully selected ..." It also associates with the bride's age and the fast pace of becoming a woman. So, she has to go!
Indoor, dark, a man and a woman quietly talkin their daughter's fate:
"... OK mother, she is fertile and adult now ..., quick, find a man ... she needs to get married otherwise we have a pickle on our hand.
Good work!
by Ari Siletz on Sun Dec 12, 2010 09:44 PM PSTThe out-of-place music makes sure the viewer does not become a wedding guest and so stays on the critical side of the documentary. Tar va donbak would have been too sympathetic. The effect is felt most strongly during the bride's dancing scene. Still, too much editorializing for a Kiarostami protege. Liked her Rugs and men better. In this short, you will also realize that Eskandarfar chooses her music carefully. In A Dowry for Mahrou, the music is not a mistake; likely it's meant to do exactly what it does: keep you annoyed with the whole affair.
It looks like
by statira on Sun Dec 12, 2010 07:56 PM PSTa short film made by a 6 yr old.
I did not know there is still places in Iran where people get married that young.
She's older
by Parthianshot91 on Sun Dec 12, 2010 06:51 PM PSTShe's diff not 13 years old, come on, looks like she's in her 20's.

She looks a bit older than 13
by Hoshang Targol on Sun Dec 12, 2010 05:25 PM PSTliked the editing and sound track, it captures the frenzy and futility of the whole ritual, all that repressed energy and tension. Bride's arrival was a good scene, she was was almost suffocating under the cover. Not enough layers though!!
Perhaps the director could have used some Wagner for sound track! good job.
.......
by yolanda on Sun Dec 12, 2010 03:14 PM PSTIf she is only 13....it is really hard to tell who wants to get married?....the 13 year old wants to get married? or her parents decided to give her away, make her get married, and send her out of the door? It is possible her parents made the decision for her....she just has to obey her parents......
Here is Khamanei officiating a 14 year old's joyless wedding:
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftfojvlGpzU&feature=player_embedded
The girl looked timid and scared! This girl's tender age does not bother the supreme leader at all......maybe he married a very young wifey, too!
Apparently there is no age limits for girls to get married in Yemen, KSD and Kuwait.......

It is illegal for a 13 year old to have sex, or marry
by Roozbeh_Gilani on Sun Dec 12, 2010 11:38 AM PSTEverywhere in the civilised world for good reasons, as a 13 year old is quite correctly considered a child. Here in US, (even "out west"!!) the husband would have been arrested and charged with rape.
But of course in the "islamist pradaise" of Iran, any crime goes so long as the sacred "islamist regime" is not even mentioned....
BTW, I really liked the music. It matched the filming style.

This is a documentary
by Yara on Sun Dec 12, 2010 11:35 AM PSTThis film has been labeled as a documentary by the director.
I don't believe this is happening in Northern Iran. The landscape, the customs, and the ladies' outfits don't indicate that it may be taking place in Northern Iran. If I were to take a guess, I would say it is around Qazvin.
Agree with JJ
by Sargord Pirouz on Sun Dec 12, 2010 10:42 AM PSTI didn't like the music or the speeded-up effect.
The bride looks older than 13.
My American grandmother and great grandmother both married when they were 14, here in the part of the US commonly referred to as "The West."
I wonder if such Arosi still take place in Iran
by Bavafa on Sun Dec 12, 2010 10:36 AM PSTMaybe in very small town and villages, right?

Is this a game for her?
by Manam_Babak on Sun Dec 12, 2010 08:29 AM PSTOne wonders what is going through her mind. Perhaps nothing!
She lives in such a small, and different from ours, that we can't even began to contemplate her thoughts, let alone to feel what is she feeling.

......
by yolanda on Sun Dec 12, 2010 08:11 AM PSTI can't believe she is only 13.........maybe because of the thick make-up.....she looks like an 18 years old.......wow! She was wrapped up like a Christmas present.......so many layers!
She is very beautiful!
Wikipedia says the marriageable age for Iranians is 16 for girls and 18 for boys.....appparently, people ignore the law!

by Peykan on Sun Dec 12, 2010 05:18 AM PSTThis soundtrack can make anything interesting. The fate of this 13-year-old bride and many more like her is going to make me feel depressed for a long time.

Nice try
by Jahanshah Javid on Sun Dec 12, 2010 05:02 AM PSTThe style and original music is from "Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance" a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass.
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSINqSvSVyM
It would have been much more powerful with an Iranian or some new music composition. But this is asking way too much for a small experimental project. This is nice work for a workshop.
