Magen - one cannot take the scriptures literally

Dear Magen,

Thank you for your comments.  The holy books, the Old/New Testament and Quran are full of contradictory statements that will drive one mad if you try to micro-analyze every bid.  Unfortunately, there are those who will take what they need to prove their point and leave the opposite point of view alone.  When interpreting the scriptures, the important thing to remember is that:

"One needs to be a human being first and foremost"

I repeat again: This is an Iranian web site NOT an Islamic forum. Iranians are not robot fanatical Muslims. It looks like you are bent on remaining confused. Iran and Islam are not the same thing. It is not our job to apologize for Islam or justify it. You are obviously not reading any of these posts. Therefore my reply is for the benefit of others.

Why are you asking us? Do you think we are Islamic experts? I am not even a Muslim nor are a lot of us. If you want to know about Islam I suggest you go to an Islamic web site. If you want to know about Iran then go ahead and ask your question.

I think I previously failed to communicate my intended point of view & perhaps offended some readers. I have a GREAT admiration for Iranian-Persian culture & people. (An admiration which was initiated & fostered by my public education since very early grade school!). As a “spectator” (& admirer of Iran/Persia) I have GREAT compassion for what Iranian people report takes place frequently in their homeland by the IRI govt.

As in my reply to “Iranian Are Animals”  (iranian.com/main/blog/fred/iranians-are-animals), for the sake of argument & this post, let's totally ignore any other nation or religion except Iran & Islam. I agree that ANY nation or religion has rogue-fanatical agents which act outside of the established laws of the land or outside of the teachings of the religious text book. I also realize that there are religious minorities & non-religious citizens living in Iran. But for this post, let's focus exclusively on Iran & Islam & totally ignore any other nation or religion for comparison.

I ask then does the Koran/Quran teach the following items are acts to be praised & imitated or acts Muslims should shun so to avoid eternal damnation?

1. Dehumanization (referring to Jews as rats, apes & pigs)? Muslims to dominate the world & any non-Muslim will be required to pay a special “tax”?

2. Inequality – women half equal to men & non-Muslims inferior to Muslims? Multiple marriage partners are OK for men but not for women?

3. Segregation – women to be kept separate from men & Muslims are to shun establishing friendships with Christians, Jews, & non-Muslims.

4. Rape/Sexual Victimization – OK for Muslim men to rape women in times of war; Muslim men are allowed to have 4 wives & unlimited “temporary wives” (aka prostitutes in non-Muslim societies). Adult men (even over age 50) are praised for marrying children (even as young as age 9) & having sex with them & this is a most excellent praise-worthy example to follow?

5. Genocide – Teaching Muslims to kill all Jews during the “end days”.

6. Cruelty – advocating amputation for crimes such as theft. Stoning to death for adultery. Public hangings?

Finally, are the above teachings specific only to a particular time & exclusive occasion? Or, are they considered as applicable today in the lives of ALL Muslim people as much as when the Koran/Quran was written.

IF, the above are indeed valid Koran/Quran teachings which are applicable to today's Muslim, then it “appears” this is one of the MAJOR foundation corner stones of the Iranian society (reported to be over 90% Muslim) & not just exclusive to the Iranian govt.... or zealots or fanatics. Let's say that the Iranian people chose to bring about a non-religious, secular govt instead of a theocracy. When more than 90% of the population believe the above to be current, applicable teachings, how would the Iranian people not end up at this very point again even if they did not have a theocracy govt? At least this is how it “appears” especially to non-Muslim, non-Iranian spectators..... who very much support the Iranian/Persian people in their mission to bring greater justice & freedoms to their society. I wish I were an expert on govt policies & religious teachings & could offer up the PERFECT solution to the problems many write about here on Iranian.com. But I can only offer my view point as a spectator & again it appears that Islamic teachings play a HUGE role in EVERYTHING which takes place not only in Iran but in the day-to-day lives of Muslim people & their logic. Finally, I offer my apology for any offense my previous post gave any readers.... that definitely was not my intent. Sometimes from the spectator seats, you do not always see clearly what “play” just occurred.

Yes, it is good that you posted the link. here. I noticed a couple of things:

• They treat Iran and IRR as the same thing. To them if you are opposed to IRR then you are opposed to Iran. What a crock. It is like saying if you oppose a virus then you are opposed the the patient!
• The mentality reminds me of IRR and Khamenei. They equate god with VF. By the same fallacy the claim if you oppose VF then you oppose god. Again a huge pile of c**p.
• On the good side we can always use more dialog. Plus maybe they will donate to IC which would be a good thing :-)

You have got it wrong about Iran. Many of us including me do not hate Israel. In fact I vew Israel as a potential ally. If you actually bothered to read my comment or that of others it would have been obvious.

I would turn the argument around and say that many Westerners specially the British share the same ignorance of Iran. They all assume that we are radical Muslims and hate Israel. They are wrong on both accounts. I will never forget the shock on a British colleague face when he saw me having wine; joking and laughing with an Israeli friend at a company party. The British dude just could not believe his eyes! It made me and the Israeli dude laugh even harder!

Very convincing video. You can definitely see the pack of blood in her hands and the splash that comes afterwards, also the changes of face detail are visible. The woman thought she could 'stick one to the man', but in a twist in their plots she didn't know she'd become sacrificed too.

If you were Japanese and they showed you demonstrations by KKK or the supremacist groups in the US, I hope that you will not generalize and say that the whole population of the US is in so and so mold.  I agree with the bloggers here.  Israel is a non-issue for many Iranians.  Iranians have much more important issues to deal with. 

As I said before, this regime will do everything in its power to save face and continue to rule in Iran.  However, the videos produced by the government, embedded here to counter the charges that the government is responsible for Neda's murder, are so disgustingly distorted that you are seeing an even harder backlash from Iranians everywhere.

Also, there will most likely be good Muslim religious folks in Iran that like to live and let live, but the problem is the fanatic side, the Islamists, that have taken the reins in Iran.  They need rallying cries for their Islamist friends, and Israel / America are their traditional home-boys to beat up.

Finally, religious fanaticism combined with political power in any religion will lead to abuses.  Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. are no different.

I really enjoy reading Iranian.com.    It has helped me so much in my goal to learn more about Iranian-Persian culture & people.   However, one thing I've learned about Middle-Easterns in general, including Iranians, & Muslim people specifically is the topic which seems to unite all of them is their dislike (putting it mildly) of Israel.   Just to speak the word "Israel" & its like insulting someone's mother.   A room can transform from being in a party light-hearted-good-time mood into, everybody is looking for the nearest weapon.   IMO, all the IRI Islamic leadership need to do, even if they were on their way to stand in front of a firing squd, would be to say, even at the last minute,  "Israel made me do it!"     I think they could "get away" with all their crimes with that single phrase & no one would ask a single question.  They use it like marksman with his favorite weapon.     It's done all the time & has historically & consistently been done.... not only in Iran but in many Islamic communities/nations.   This isn't something new to the IRI leadership.   IMO as a non-middle eastern & non-muslim person, it doesn't seem logical to speculate on the near end of the Islamic Republic until the foundation which they stood on to build the IRI is first eliminated.      Perhaps I am ill informed & do not understand the culture nor the religion of Iran to form this opinion.  However, that is my opinion from the spectator seats?

Afghanistan has millions of refugees in Iran. Not to mention the opium trade. Plus Afghans particularly ethnic Tajiks are very close to Iranians.  Iraq too is close to Iran. The Kurds  of Iraq will always be close to Iranian Kurds. The old Sassanian capital is in Iraq not to mention a number of important Shiite sites. Even a 100% secular Iran will still be close to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
