TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran executed two people on Thursday over widespread street unrest that erupted after the Islamic Republic's disputed presidential election in June, an Iranian news agency reported.
The two were among 11 people sentenced to death on charges including moharebeh (waging war against God), trying to overthrow the Islamic establishment and membership of armed groups, the ISNA students agency said.
The executions were the first carried out for election-related incidents and may further increase tension in Iran ahead of possible new anti-government protests next month.
The presidential election, which was followed by huge opposition rallies, plunged Iran into its deepest internal crisis since the 1979 Islamic revolution and exposed widening establishment divisions.
In the most serious violence since the aftermath of the election, eight people were killed in clashes between opposition supporters and security forces on Ashura, the holy Shi'ite day of ritual mourning, that fell on December 27.
"Following the riots and anti-revolutionary measures in recent months, particularly on the day of Ashura, a Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court branch considered the cases of a number of accused and handed down the execution sentences against 11 of those," ISNA said.
"The sentences against two of these people ... were carried out today at dawn and the accused were hanged," ISNA said, adding the sentences had been confirmed by an appeal court.
It named the two as Mohammad Reza Alizamani (right) and Arash Rahmanipour (left).
"The sentences for the other nine of the accused in recent months' riots are at the appeal stage ... upon confirmation, measures will be undertaken to implement the sentences," ISNA said.
ISNA said the charges included membership of two anti-revolutionary groups, including a pro-monarchy association.

The beginning of the end

what a shame
by mahmoudg on Thu Jan 28, 2010 07:24 AM PSTA regime has reached its end of ropes, when as scare tactic starts killings its own citizens. God is assuredly ashamed of its Islam no doubt. He probably as we speak is taking Mohamad to task for failing to properly implement this religion. Heck he may even execute him on the count that he is a moharad for failing to speak to his goons on earth. What a bunch of hog wash and a shame that people have to die for this nonsene. The end of IRI is near, a violent end I may add.
Yes, the timing
by Cost-of-Progress on Thu Jan 28, 2010 07:08 AM PSTis a measured approach to terrorize people who plan to continue their struggle to free themselves from these anti-Iranian murderers.
The blood of all those who have given their lives to free Iran is on the hands of every single IRI supporter and apologist.
Shame on you.

Anyone know?
by bottled-banana on Thu Jan 28, 2010 08:21 AM PSTHow does one "wage war against God"? How can one possibly win a war against God? Why would God need the Islamic Republic to kill people on his/her behalf? Indeed, why would God want anyone killed on his behalf?
Or is it simply that "human beings" (like those responsible for these executions) simply find it convenient to use God as an excuse to kill other human beings they happen to take objections to, for their own reasons?

Tragic, but feeling sad is not enough
by ramintork on Thu Jan 28, 2010 05:14 AM PSTIf we don't take any action then we would not have honoured them.
We in the West must be more supportive, we should raise awareness.
We need to come away from our PC, and TVs and show to the world how we feel.
Exchanging News between ourselves is not enough, we don't want to keep preaching to the converted we want the people sitting in Davos right now understand that we as people matter and that they can not go and make decisions just on the basis of their interest in our resources, and to do this we must take the fight to their voters.

So typical for worlds freest country (according to ahmaghinejad)
by choghok on Thu Jan 28, 2010 01:43 AM PSTTo jail people because of something that is legal by law in the country (non violent protest), then torture them into confessions and then stand them in court without any representation and finally execute them.
I would guess that these two gentlemen were normal citizens with no connections either to foreign countries or to the mafias in Iran. If they would have they would have been spared.
These are final nails in coffin of tyranny really since it will polarize the situation even more.
Not in vain
by Jahanshah Javid on Thu Jan 28, 2010 12:38 AM PSTThe executions have been timed days before 22 Bahman to keep protests at a minimum. This will keep some people from the streets, but those who will show up will be angrier than ever. Rahmanipour and Alizamani, two inoocents, have perished, but not in vain.
