AP: Iranian media say protests by merchants in Tehran's main bazaar forced authorities to back off of plans to increase taxes on their businesses. Newspapers on Wednesday say reports of a plan to increase the taxes prompted merchants to gather in the main bazaar, some of them closing down their shops in protest. State TV says that after the protests Tuesday, Finance Ministry officials and merchants met and reached a deal leaving their taxes at the 2008 rate, which ranges from 6 to 15 percent. Iran's government is trying to institute economic reforms to boost the ailing economy and raise revenues. But it has been deeply wary of public resistance. In 2008, the government suspended a controversial sales tax, a day after a rare strike by merchants.

The irony of history!

I am glad to read the posts below
by fooladi on Wed Jul 07, 2010 01:35 PM PDTIt just shows that Iran 2010 is very different from Iran 1979. People are not going to be tricked again.
Thease bazari leaches do not contribute anything to society in terms of industrial production or labour. They just buy the cheap chinese goods, mark them up, and share their loot with their bassiji supporters. In the process, they are ruining the Iran's own idustrial production. Not a day goes by without a factory being shut down and people being laid off work unable to feed their family.
After the islamic regime is overthrown and their bassiji protectors hanged, they should be given a spade each to go to farms and dig the ground and do some hoest work for a change.

by HHH on Wed Jul 07, 2010 12:48 PM PDTThese billionaire bastards financed mullahs into power. With 200% markups they add to their prices they should pay 20% tax and if I was Tehran Mayor I would tell them "Stay shut forever or pay 20% tax" and for these who stayed shut more than a month I would cancel their business license for Good.
They're used to free hand and "Moftkhori" for too long. Just take and take and take and no give other than Mullahs bribes.
you r right
by fidelio5 on Wed Jul 07, 2010 09:52 AM PDTthe bazarris are still a major constituency for the akhoonds, thats why the regime caved so quickly.
i get excited about this
by Worcester Mo on Wed Jul 07, 2010 08:25 AM PDTbut then i remember that the bazar people are the biggest supporters of the clergies and this is just because they are worried about their signigicant bottom line which is higher than many doctors and engineers in Iran...so i need help to figure out how to feel about this.
