Noon-e Tiri

A souvenir from Boroujerd

For some reason, this was mesmerizing to watch! "Noon_e Tiri is a sweet bread made out of flour, Saffron, sugar, egg and oil (the oil made out of home made butter). This bread is not that much sweet and is a very light snack. In Boroujerd ,a city in the west of Iran, people make this at home for Nowruz and other holidays."

I Never Forget Naneh Talaa

by HHH on

We lived in an old house in Malayer back in 1969, near Boroujerd. There was a vineyard behind our house and house was full of yellow scorpions. We had a maid, naneh-Talaa, she was about 60 with grayish hair and kind just like a grandma.

She made Shirmal dough with fresh milk and flour, added her special formula mix then took the dough to our neighbor's house who had a ground Tanoor (oven). She cooked the Shirmal bread and made human and animal figures for us kids.

The shirmals were so delicious that I never tasted such shirmal again. Years later while I was in Torghabeh near Mashad I bought a shirmal bread which wasn't as good but still reminded me of naneh-Talaa's.

There are small memories in life we cherish more than than anything money could buy. I laugh when some people think it's money that brings happiness. No, happiness is having many many naneh-Talaas, special people in your life.

Bakhtiari bread

by hazratee on

Noon Tiri is originally from Bakhtiari tribe. Just flour and water. No saffron, sugar or oil and they are not made for any special events. After they are cooked and piled up in a tray, they are very dry and fragile. Sprinkle some water and that makes them real soft.
Good for breakfast with butter, jam, cheese and other diary product.
I grew up in my village with this bread. Good old times.
