by Rea on Mon Oct 11, 2010 03:48 PM PDTYou are a real gem for all non-Iranians trying to learn and understand.
Dear DK,
by 13th Legion on Mon Oct 11, 2010 05:51 AM PDTDear DK, Thank you for sharing your valuable time in sharing all this practical and valuable information related to this topic, you have managed to compile a wealth of information in such a short time in your comment as a skilful and tasteful DJ would compile and produce a tasteful and sophisticated session of mixed music!
I find the most valuable, particle point in your comment to be its ethical aspect: how important it is for an artist or anyone for that matter to thorley research and educate themselves in their craft and opinions before commenting on it or presenting it in public, it teaches us to take more responsibility in evaluating our thoughts, professional and personal opinions before with materialize it and communicate it to the outside world, for every thought that metalizes into action will follow at an immediate, short and long term reaction that will come back for us to deal with in some shape or form.
I also enjoy Ms. Farjami’s writings and think of her as a young ,bright, sensitive and talented individual with a good heart and good intensions, but I keep in mind that she is also young and still experiencing life and learning about herself and the world she lives in as we all are.
This reminds me of one of my favorite Oscar Wilde’s quotes:
“I am not young enough to know everything”
Warm regards,
X III
P.S.
I really don’t care for Sohrab Akhavan’s style of interviewing, it really got on my nerves, I get the impression that he tries to hard to come across as an intellectual, goofed up to many times while attempting to read out her poetry and doesn’t give the guest speaker to finish their sentence by jumping in cutting her of and making suggestions.
Thank You Darıus...

Aside from your ignorant Comments on "Aryan" Tribes ;0)
by Darius Kadivar on Sun Oct 10, 2010 09:10 PM PDTAs if dismantling our Persian Heritage by the Pseudo Academics of the Islamic Republic was not enough ...
To see Leila fall into a similar temptation due to ignorant generalizations rather than attempt to understand where that frustrated identification to so called "Aryans" amongst a minor few fellow compatriots stems from is slightly annoying to hear in the mouth of such an intelligent and knowledgeable person who has lived in the West and has enough material at her disposal in order to research her claims than indulge in such ignorant statements ...
To begin with Aryans were Not a Race but a linguistic Entity :
HISTORY OF IDEAS: Georges Dumezil, on Indo European languages and Myths (Apostrophes,1984)
Something that an even More Ignorant Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Ideology which stemmed from his sick mind never comprehended ...
HITLER ON THE COUCH: A Psychological Profile of Adolf Hitler (BBC Documentary)
But whose ignorance seems to have replaced any minimum scholastic curiosity in the very notion of ethnicity and race from an academic point of view with a sense of guilt and Self Denial specifically amongst Iranians of my ( and Leila's) generation ...
And encouraged in that attitude by pseudo Intellectuals Like Columbia Professor Hamid Dabashi:
LOST IN TRANSLATION: NIAC Welcomes Hamid Dabashi on Advisory Board
Or a Fellow Namesake:
KNIGHTHOOD: Order of the Garter bestowed upon Mohsen Kadivar For Giving me a Bad Name ;0(
Is something that doesn't stop to amaze me ...
No one claims that our ancestors (Aryan or Not) were pure all the more that no nation or people o ethnicity in the history of mankind can ever scientifically claim to such purity. All the more that Human Civilization most probably originated in Africa only to spread to other continents through migration.
Nor do we claim to be Saints or that our nation including the Persian Empire was not built without shedding innocent blood no more than was the case for the Roman or Chinese Empires both of which greatly contributed to respectively European and Asian Civilizations.
But given that for the past 30 years the current regime's ONLY Cultural Policy has been to encourage our Collective Amnesia :
Iran's ancient Kings could be removed from history textbooks, replaced with events within Islamic period?
And encouraging Iranians in rejecting their past in whatever form or shape in the name of some arrogant Republican aka Jomhurykhah Moral Superiority without ever evaluating the risks of such a Self denial and rejection of a Royal heritage (which for better or for worst had strongly defined our collective identity ) on grounds and claims by marginal members of our ethnic minorities who wish nothing better than seeing our county dissolve:
SEPARATIST TEMPTATIONS: Don't Let It Fool You ... Treason Exists ...
Don't Get me Wrong I don't claim that Leila Farjami is saying or wishing this by rightly denouncing the "Aryan" Cult Mentality amongst some of our fellow Iranians or our collective obssession in seeing our history as the oldest and most advanced civilization in the world.
It is true that like in any community we also have our share of fanatic or KKK equivalents amongst our fellow compatriots too.
But What surprises me is that such marginal demonstrations of "Aryan" Cult often displayed on mediocre LA Television programs are seen as a constant threat to our democratic ideals but none of Our enlightened Diaspora Intellectuals seem to be alarmed by the equally despisable Self Denigration displayed by the Islamic Republic for the past 30 years ?
Even the Palestinian Predicament seems to trigger more support and or outrage by fellow Iranian Academics :
Honest Genocide by Khodadad Rezakhani
Sasanian Chemical Warfare? by Khodadad Rezakhani
Than the wiping of the names of Persian Kings from School books or that of Persian Poets and Poetess' like Forough Farrokhzad ( whom I know Leila is a fan of hers and knowlegdeable connaisseur of her ground breaking Poetry) and whose own brother was the First to Alert us all on the IRI's Attempts to destroy our cultural heritage from day ONE:
Fereydoune Farrokhzad : Iroony Boodan:
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4b8VF_uKXo
I do understand that being Patriotic and Nationalistic has been given a bad name particularly in the 20th Century specifically in the West including America after the horrors of WWI and WWII, the Vietnam War and the "guilt" that seems to be associated to the word "Patriotism" or "Nationalism" seen as opposed to "Democratic" Values and Democratic Thought.
But I am not sure that the "Woodstock", "Flower Power" Mentality which we tend to admire so much in the West (and which our Left Wing "Arsty Farsty" Iranian Intelligenstia has also inherited for Fashionable reasons having failed to reinvent itself in an original and distinct way) would have saved the World back in 1939 from Nazi Bullying ...
Were it not for the Nationalism of the likes of Winston Churchill, De Gaulle or other men senstitive to the cause of Freedom like our very own Shapour Bakhtiar:
BEHOLD THE PALE HORSE: French Socialists Pay Tribute to Shapour Bakhtiar by DK
We would all be living under Nazi Boots today.
Iran in London WW II parade
Iran in London WW II parade (2)
Sorry But whether it is Fashionable or Not I have always believed that The Spirit of National Resistance MATTERS :
SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE: Iranian Intelligenstia Remembers Shapour Bakhtiar by DK
I think however that much of the debates over our Collective "Schizophrenia" and confusion over our so called quest for our "Aryan" Identity is the result of an Identity crisis shared equally by exiled Iranians in the Diaspora as much as those born in the Islamic Republic. Much of which is the result of ignorance and confusion due to the fact that we think that looking back at history and our past is useless or worse can be a source of intolerant nationlistic behavior. I think that is where the Iranian Intelligenstia at large (including those who are leading or spearheading the Green Movement) are entirely wrong and unknowingly are being manipulated by the Islamic Republic which could not ask for better ...
Fortunately Not Everyone has Alzheimers :
Iranian Diaspora Intelligentsia Unite Against Islamic Republic's Holocaust Revisionism by Darius KADIVAR
Milani: Holocaust | Iranian.com
It should be noted that The Islamic Republic over the past 30 years aims at replacing Iranian Nationalism as embodied by it's Royal Heritage by another kind of Nationalism stemming from our nation's Islamic Past and establish a Caliphat pride to supersede what is left of our Pre Islamic Heritage.
And Iran is not the only "Persian" speaking region under such a cultural offensive threat today:
Arab 'Islamic' Names Displacing Persian Ones In Tajikistan
As Such I think that the Guilt Ridden mentality when it comes to patriotic sentiments amongst some of our Intellectuals is only benefiting the Islamic Republic's Long Term Agenda: Eradicate Iran and Iranians of anything that has contributed to shape their Persian Identity.
That is why I humbly Believe that the Role of an Iranian Intellectual today as never before is to denounce this kind of manipulation and highjacking of History by ignorant political agendas.
Leila Farjami seems to identify this manipulation only amongst a certain category of Iranians namely the Tehrangeles "Aryan" Parasts but fails to see it amongst the IRI "Arab" Parasts ...
I maybe wrong in my assessment of what she has been trying to say here on this specific subject. If so ... Then please forgive my ignorance.
In anycase I was happy to see a former regular contributor of Iranian.com and wishing her continued success in her literary endeavors.
Having followed Leila's contributions over the years I know that she is a senstive and intelligent writer and it is always a joy to read and watch or listen to her in the media including in this very interesting interview even if I do not share her assessment on this specific question.
Best,
DK
PS: Another Proof if needed that badmouthing an entire Community's ( Tehrangeles) patriotic behavior due to the fanatic behavior of a minor few ( Sakuee and Co) is Wrong ... :

For Not all those who are Proud of their "Aryan" or "Persian" Heritage including Royalists displaying their Shiro Khorshid Flags :
