Hampshire Chronicle: COMEDIAN Shappi Khorsandi will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Winchester at a graduation ceremony in the cathedral on October 22. The Iranian-born comic graduated from the university in 1995, when it was known as King Alfred’s College, with a degree in drama, theatre and television. She is one of Britain’s most popular female comedians and a regular performer on TV and radio. Last year she published her first book, A Beginner’s Guide to Acting British, an account of her cultural transition to British life. Professor Elizabeth Stuart, pro vice chancellor at the university, said: “We are delighted to be able to honour Shappi Khorsandi. She is a wonderful role model to all our students because she had a dream – to be a comedian – and she pursued it relentlessly until she was successful >>>

by comrade on Mon Oct 11, 2010 04:32 PM PDTI can't let go of this blog which is soon to be removed from the top page before expressing my concern over how our comedians feel obliged to please the white audience with their ever-laughable, self-demeaning racial jokes.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Mon Oct 11, 2010 03:26 PM PDTNo problem :-) Now to the real question: what did you think of Tofigh? Does that resonate with your sense of humor. IMHO it was the best of Persian humor.

One thing I really miss is Tofigh. I so much want the old copies from the 60s before it got banned. My aunt in Iran has a whole bunch but threw them away. I was shocked! I had told them to just mail it to me. Will pay for the shipping and everything.
Does anyone here know where to get some?

by mash Ghanbar on Mon Oct 11, 2010 02:05 PM PDTIt all depends on The person. When i turn on the TV and want to watch a comedy i want the jokes and the story to be simple enough so that i can enjoy the 30-40 minutes i am spending in there. Not tos say that i can not comprehend a bit more complex or nuanced version, but rather as a general rule. I mean i don't want to sit down and Think what he or she said and why? If i want that i will just watch a newsreport or an analysis. That to me is comedy,
Not all of them include dirty words.
I used to watch monthy Python and I am sorry... didn't think much of it at all. I guess that means i have lost my Iranian humor and am americanized beyond hope according to our expert Behavior analyst:))
Brilliant...

by mash Ghanbar on Mon Oct 11, 2010 01:55 PM PDTDon't get too excited. You are far from hitting a nerve, what is the matter? buisness so slow out there, you can't wait to score on IC? Not this time precious. Not this time.
Calm down?? Look who is "commanding" whom to calm down. I am cool. You are the one who made a fuss about all of this and made it all about The british and American animosity, and My iranianness and etc... By the way, the last time any american commanded anything against the British, some Behinds were kicked in a major way,. so don't even go there.
I have "lost" my iranian humor? you mean "sense of humor? all because I don't like the british comedy? oh lord. What an accuare guage to make such a judgment by. Leave it to the british to make Judgements on the psycology of the people of this world. And somehow that qualifies me as being "americanized"!! Is it mandatory to take Pych courses before they grant you british citizenship? Seems like those of us who live in Britain consider themselve such huge authorities on always coming up with some kinda of personality diagnostic on the rest of us.
No farah joon joon. I don't take my name as being funny. It is a name. Don't look too much into it. I am not gonna bother with your research proposal, knowing that no matter what i pick out for you, you will be putting it down based on the harsh attitude you have just demonstrated agaist American comedy.
Yeah; enjoy them while sipping on your stale cold tea...
Niloufar jaan please don't take me wrong
by Farah Rusta on Mon Oct 11, 2010 01:52 PM PDTI absolutely love American humor. I still can't match Woody Allen's brand of humor with anything British. And indeed Colbert. All i am saying is that one must give credit where credit is due. I can't imagine any nation can take a micky out of their leadership than the wat the Brits do it. Take a look at this the most outrageous British comedy which was so popular when I was staying there long ago.
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxApyFKDQAQ
and you are absolutely right in saying the Brits and Iranians sense of humor is much closer than Iranians and Americans.

Oops! did I hit a raw nerve?
by Farah Rusta on Mon Oct 11, 2010 01:05 PM PDTGhanabr joon you, an Iroonian, seem to care more about American comedy than the Americans themselves!! Or perhaps you think you are cammanding the American fighters against the Brits in York Town again?!! Calm down bro, we are talking about a British-Iranian stand up comedian entertaining a British audience. Generally speaking the British brand of comedy is recognized as the thinking comedy, as opposed to the American physical comedy, across the entire English speaking nations including Americans and Canadians. There are exceptions everywhere but I think you are too Americanized (and have lost your Iranian humor) to grasp, let alone laugh at such political comedy as this:

Now search the Net Ghanabar joon ( I suppose you take your name as being funny) and show me an example of "your" American comedy that can beat that!

Shahparak, ignore the stuff here. Unless you say what you mean and not mean what you say and not do a Bob Hope, American audiences don't/won't get it.
They love you in your country UK and if you ever come here to the US, talk to Maz Jobrani and keep the jokes simple!!

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:22 AM PDTI am no fan of Britain. However their comedy is often quite funny. I love Monty Python and really get a laugh out of it.
American "slapstick" is also funny to me. However their sit-coms suck. Worse are some of"stand up" American comedians. My friends made me watch one and the degree of dirty words was shocking. Guy was making up for lack of talent by dirty words: not funny.

by mash Ghanbar on Mon Oct 11, 2010 09:43 AM PDTThe american brand of humor may at times be tasteless and uncanny, but it sure beats the "dry" and supposedly thinking!! humore that passes of as comedy by the british. Based on what i have seen from her, she is going overboard and puts too much emphasis on thinking in her comic routines. That takes the whole element of fun and casualness out of the deal. Remember, people go to the show to hear Jokes not a routine political analysis by Allisster so and so on BBC. You are confusing commentary with comedy show.
We are the one WITH WMDs!
by Farah Rusta on Mon Oct 11, 2010 07:40 AM PDTI found this one the funniest. Well, actually. I am not surprised she does not come across as funny to the Ameircan audience, after all they are not used to "thinking" humor!
Iranian stand-ups should play less on self-denigrating "cultural" jokes and more on and the host country's cultural mindset.
Any ways, Good Luck Shappy, though I prefer your humor to your politics.

by Piyalechi on Sun Oct 10, 2010 04:15 PM PDTShaaparak jaan, may you live a long and prosperously happy life.
Seeing that the crowd is being a bit tough on you here, my dear,
I wanted to let you know that I and the likes of me really enjoy your highly-rich-in-nuance comical rhetoric that oozes with your unexpectedly ballzy wit, and find you a gem amongst those who have chosen the very difficult job of making people think and smile…
Noush…
Also, I was floored by the realization of the intensity of the courage that it took for you to be ok about the picture that your audience would create in their minds when they hear you say “I keep inviting people to come on my face!”
I don't find her funny
by divaneh on Sun Oct 10, 2010 03:38 PM PDTbut have heard a few good lines from her. One of them (I think it was her) was this one:
"I do not understand when people call someone mixed race. Children of two people with different skin complexions cannot be called mixed race. Mixed race to me is someone like, em, a mermaid"
She forms a good role model for young Iranians.
