Davari, editor-in-chief of Saham News, a website affiliated with the defeated 2009 presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi, was charged with several antistate counts, including “propagating against the regime,” and “disrupting national security.” The charges stemmed from Davari’s reporting on widespread complaints of abuse and rape of inmates at Kahrizak Detention Center. The detention center was closed in July 2009 after Saham News and others documented the pervasive abuse. In May 2010, Davari was sentenced to five years in prison, according to the website of Reporters and Human Rights Activists of Iran. His family said he was being held at Tehran’s Evin Prison. Davari was tortured and coerced into making false statements against Karroubi, along with false statements recanting his Kahrizak Detention Center reports, according to an April 6 report by Reporters and Human Rights Activists. When Davari complained about poor prison conditions, officials placed him in solitary confinement and denied him family visits, according to news reports. In mid-2011, Davari was sentenced to an additional year in prison, allegedly for his participation in teacher protests in 2006, reformist news websites reported in July. In recognition of his exemplary journalism, Comiitte to Protect Journalists honored Davari with its International Press Freedom Award in November 2010 >>>

Remembering those in jail
by Jahanshah Javid on Tue Dec 06, 2011 08:05 PM PSTEvery day a prisoner of conscience will be featured in iranian.com to remember their bravery, innocence and suffering. It's the responsibility of those who are free to recognize and help those who are not.
One of the bravest men around...
by Shifteh Ansari on Tue Dec 06, 2011 06:20 PM PSTIn fact they have not been able to extract any confessions from Mohammad Davari, or another brave journalist, Mehdi Mahmoudian, both of whom were in charge of recording and reporting the facts about what happened at Kahrizak. Both Davari and Mahmoudian were savagely tortured, because if the two of them only cast doubt on the testimony, somehow one of the darkest chapters of the Islamic Republic's atrocities could be conveniently closed. Neither men provided such relief for IRI.
I once read an interview with Mohammad Davari's mother. She is a simple woman from a village in Khorasan. She has been left destitute in her son's absence, because since Davari's arrest, the old lady's source of income has been eliminated. She has to travel from Khorasan in order to visit with her son, and she does not have the means or the energy to do this too frequently. This is where you can read the interview:
//moalleman1.iranblog.com/?mode=ContinuedPost...
And here's the translation of that interview into English:
Question: Ms. Davari, tell us about his past.
Answer: When he was a kid, I used to bake bread to make some money to give them for pocket money the next school day. If I gave Mohammad 100 Tooman, I could see that he would hold on to it until the following week. Mohammad used to go to mosque. He was always washed up for prayer. He studied the Qoran. He never missed any of his prayers. Whenever there was something going on at the mosque, he would be the first one there. He was involved in Basij, too. All our neighbors used to congratulate me on how I had raised him. They used to say that even though I raised my children without a father, I had done a very good job. I delivered a healthy child to the society. I don't know what has become of him in prison.
Question: What is your request from the authorities?
Answer: I only ask God to save everyone. Mohammad is a reporter. It is a reporter's responsibility to prepare news. He hasn't done anything bad. Now they have taken him and are accusing him of things. What has my Mohammad done?
Question: How many years has Mohammad lived in Tehran?
Answer: I think he has been here for six years. He loves being a teacher. He loves doing things for the children. His students used to love him. He was such a good teacher that he was able to become a member of the City Council in our town. Whenever there was a problem, people would go to him. He always defended his students.
Question: When did Mohammad go to the war front?
Answer: I can't remember exactly. But I think he was in first year of middle school [sixth grade, about 12 years of age]. He was in the war front for a whole year, in the front line.
Question: You said he went to the war front when he was in first year of middle school. How did they register him?
Answer: We didn't know at first. He ran away [to go to the war front]. The neighbors would come and tell me "your boy has taken our sons to the war front." I told them "they went themselves," but they would say "your son took them!"
Question: Was Mohammad disabled in the war?
Answer: Yes, my son was injured in the war. There is still shrapnel pieces in his body, but we didn't know! We heard later that he was taken to the hospital in Ahvaz. When he came home, his eyes could not see anything. He still has shrapnel pieces in his legs. When they threw chemical bombs, his friends said that he had disappeared! Later, everyone said that he would die. And now this....
Question: When did Mohammed lose his father?
Answer: The kids were very young when their father died. Their father was very sick. One of his legs was paralyzed. His doctors said he got the wrong shot. He was in the hospital for a month and Mohammad was studying in Mashhad at the time. He would come from Mashhad and would say, mother you don’t need to go. Let me stay with father.
Question: Have you come from Bojnourd alone?
Answer: Yes, I've come alone and I’ve come to stay with my son. I don’t have anyone in Tehran to take me to the court. I do not know with whom and where to go to free my son. I ask the authorities to take me to him to stay with my son if they don’t want to release him.
Question: Talk about Mohammad’s characteristics.
Answer: Mohammad’s attitude is excellent. He has taken care of his brothers as much as a father would have done. Perhaps no father would do so much for his children as much as Mohammad has helped the family.
Question: How do feel now that your son is in prison?
Answer: I feel sad that my child is in prison, but I am proud that he has done his duty. I'm proud of him. I’ve given a healthy child to the society and I’m not bothered by his activities for his job!
Question: Did you meet with Mr. Karroubi. What he say?
Answer: We went to see Mr. Karroubi. Mr. Karroubi said: "I brought him, I stay with it till the end and I'll defend him. I will defend his right. No one forced him. I brought him, and I have the duty to defend him to the end. I thanked Mr. Karroubi, and I thank him now. Mr. Karroubi said he has written a letter, and he is pursuing his case, and you should follow his case also. Mr. Karroubi said that Mohammad did this on his orders, and that Mohammad is not responsible for any of this. Of course, many people in Bojnourd organized to do something for Mohammad.
Question: This is not the first time Mohammad has gone to prison. How did you feel then and now do you feel now?
Answer: The last time I was not too concerned, but this time I am worried, very worried.
Question: Would you like to say anything else?
Answer: Just to say, free my son.
