Islamic democracy is not induced from the above. Islamic demcoracy has its roots in the Islamic society and it is from there that it gets its strength. Khatami is the fifth column of any movement that he joins.

If he had an ounce of democratic belief in him he would not have believed in this "nezam".

The problem with Khatami is that.....

       He cannot tell the difference between a dead or alive mule! He still insists he can ride on a dead mule!

   Pooe fellow is confiused and conflicted and that is fine as long as he stays away from any leadership position!

    There is one justification for his position though. To save himself. Agha Khatami, honest to goodness tell me this position you are advocating is for the sake of country or your own?!

خوب است آنانی که برای "وزیر نفت " خاتمی کار میکرده اند و بعد از آن شیتیلی دانشگاهی گرفته اند، قدری هم راجع به آن  چیزها بگویند.

Facts vs. Fictions

First of all, some of you act as if this is the discovery of the century. It is not. Anyone who has followed Khatami knows where he stands. He once said, "If I am to choose between an internal dictator and a puppet of a foreign power who supposedly brings 'democracy' to Iran, I choose the former." I agree with him, IF (note the capital IF) they are our only two choices.And, many in this site do prefer the puppet!

Second, all the speeches belong to pre-2005. People have changed, and so has Khatami. Right after the 2009 eloection Khatami proposed a referendum to address the issue, and has repeated the same several times.

Third, when he says that it is not clear what lies beyond the IRI, students at Daneshkadeh Fanny, the most radical Daneshkadeh in Iran, and the same students whom we all constantly refer to as brave, courageous, etc., applaud. These are not Basiji students. We cannot have it both ways. Either students are courageous and at the forefront of the struggle, or not. If they are, then the implication is clear. If not, then we should stop pretending.

Fourth, despite all of his shortcomings, Khatami is popular. When he announced that he would run in the 2009 election, anywhere he went he was greeted by tens of thousands, and these were not organized by the hardliners; far from it. These were ordinary people greeting him. Just the other day, thousands, both in Tehran and Yazd, shouted in his support. When on Norooz day he went home to Yazd, thousands greeted him.

Why is that? It is not because people agree with Khatami. It is not because people consider him a great, or strong leader. It is because people know, (1) he is a good man; (2) he means well; (3) he has never been involved in any crime or financial corruption, and (4) that he is NOT the problem; the problem is IRGC, Basij, and their thugish supporters.

Being a reformist, or believing in anything else for that matter, is not a matter of taking part in a "beauty" or popularity contest. It is a matter of believing in certain principles, acting according to them, and not changing the principles so long as nothing better has come along.

Now, come back and attack me for saying these, which anyone who is even remotely linked with what is going on inside the country already knows.But, then again, nothing else is expected!
