BBC: Iran's former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has lost his position as head of a powerful clerical body, reports say. Mr Rafsanjani had chaired the Assembly of Experts, which selects the supreme leader and supervises his activities, for the past four years. But he was criticised by hardliners for being close to the opposition. Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani was selected to replace him, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported. Mr Rafsanjani said that for the sake of keeping the country united, he would not stand against Mr Kani. "If he was ready and accepted responsibility, I would certainly not nominate myself, so that we could eliminate the differences and this sacred institution would not be damaged by my side," he said >>>

Good analysis, JJ. For an observer outside the country.
by Mamane-Omid on Tue Mar 08, 2011 06:12 PM PSTI guess with this consolidation of the thugs power - albeit as you put it, slight - repression is closing ranks behind Khamenei.
Might be wishful thinking, but lets see where its goanna get them. Not too far, I hope.
It took Iran-1979 and 30 years for the Americans to finally figure outhow to do it right.
Of the 3 earlier experiments - Iran, Nicaragua, Philippines - andthey way they turned out, American foreign policy strategy put in place injimmy Carter time finally started to work.
This, as it is known as Cyrus Vance doctrine (from the tail end ofthe cold war era), states that for 3rd world countries to belong tothe 1st world instead of the Communists, their populace should wantto be on our side instead of the communism. He argued, to achieve this, UnitedStates foreign policy should discourage dictatorships and promote Democracy.Hence, Iran, Nicaragua, and Philippines.
Although it s too soon to tell, Arab World transformation maybe happening the way it was originally intended for Iran back in 1979 .

Great News, No More Fence-Sitters
by IranFirst on Tue Mar 08, 2011 03:11 PM PSTHis downfall is good news for forces of democracy, he was trying to play it both ways, recently he was even calling the greens "fetneh" to get on the good side of Khamenei. With him outof power (or most of it), the calls for Regime Change become louder.
A corrupt regime that cannot even tolerate
mild criticism from its own former top officials is unlikely to listen
to tougher criticism from the masses. Look out for the regime attacks on Khatami next. With Mousavi, Karrubi, Rafsanjani and Khatami out of picture, the option of "reform" within the system is dead. Iranainan won't accept anything short of a regime change and they don't need any of these leaders to reach their goal.

by hamsade ghadimi on Tue Mar 08, 2011 08:51 AM PSTi wonder if this is a step down for him or up? it's widely known that khamenei, with his many reported illnesses, is on his way to hell. with rafsanjani out of the khoftegan committee and the responsibility to select the next rahbar, he can deflect criticism for whoever gets selected. not to mention that there is an outside chance of being selected himself!

End of an era
by Jahanshah Javid on Tue Mar 08, 2011 08:33 AM PSTIt is the end of another era. His departure will send him farther away from the center of power and actually increase his popularity as an outsider. But not by much. It is much too late for this old fox. He's done too much damage. Too much blood on his hands. Too wishy washy. Too corrupt. Always siding with the establishment, rather than defending the interests of the people.
Choosing Mahdavi-Kani as Rafsanjani's successor is an interesting move. He is not a radical and quite close to the Rafsanjani faction actually. But his loyalty to velayat e faghih is rock solid and he's going to sit in the background without making any waves -- just the way Khamenei likes it.
