AFP: It will cost an Iranian man convicted of throwing acid in the face of a fellow student two million euros to escape a court-ordered blinding, the Arman newspaper quoted his victim as saying on Tuesday. "I announced that I want two million euros to guarantee my life and my future, and not for treatment," Ameneh Bahrami told the paper. "It is only then that I will give up qesas (retributive justice) against Majid, although they said -- and I hope it is true -- that the sentence will be carried out next week," she added >>>
Tehran prosecutor says blinding will go ahead under "better conditions":

Life sentence & paying the victim
by hirre on Thu May 19, 2011 08:40 AM PDTIt's better with a life sentence and paying what you can to the victim. If he goes blind then there will be 2 blind people that are a burden for the families and society. Eye for an eye is too barbaric, 2 million euros is over-valued and simple can't be payed be the man in Iran...
Crazy Love
by Niki Tehranchi on Thu May 19, 2011 12:41 AM PDTThis horrendous story reminds me of another real life story of an acid blinding of a woman by a spurned lover, that made headlines in the US in the 60s. The true story of Burt and Linda Pugach was filmed years later in the documentary "Crazy Love." (//www.imdb.com/title/tt0790706/). In that case, the woman ended up marrying her aggressor after he was finally released from prison. I don't think it was love at all, but the fact that being disfigured and traumatized, she not only lost any chance of a personal life but also could hardly support herself and was living in squalor so in the end, she ended up turning to him for financial support and I guess ultiately, for emotiona support too. I hope the documentary makers were being ironic in giving the title "Crazy Love" to their film. I can't put myself in the shoes of the victim and speculate as to what form of "justice" would make me feel better in this circumstance.
Eye For Eye

Before making any commend; if you were Ameneh:
Pick up Two million Euros?
Let him go
Eye for an eye' punishment
Life in persion
Forgive him
Or eye for eye.
She is not going to see any parts of the beauty of her life any more.
Punishment.
I would pick

Question posed to all:
by Ali P. on Wed May 18, 2011 05:14 PM PDTPut YOURSELF in her shoes.
If YOU were Ameneh, blinded in two eyes by the action of this man, what would YOU ask for?
a) Two million Euros
b) "Eye for an eye' punishment
c) Life sentence
d) I'll pardon him
e) Any other punishment
This is not to mean, that the popular answer, would be the right, and fair, punishment. This is just a toll of IC readers.
compensation whip round
by ComraidsConcubine on Wed May 18, 2011 03:00 PM PDTall those who found the previous "idea" a bit unsightly, well, now's your time for a whip round for a less gory type of "justice". Two million Euros should be a doddle against the dollar and pound sterling, ignoring sanctions, of course.
yes yes all right, I'll play mummy treasurer. Alternatively you could try Dr Zamba Malaba in Nigeria or IRI state compensation scheme.
Whip it!
An alternative punishment would be ...
by Bavafa on Wed May 18, 2011 02:48 PM PDTA court ordered marriage without the possibility of divorce for him. A request for divorce by her would reinstate the original punishment, in another word he needs to provide to the best his ability for her, both monetarily and emotionally.
Of course a separate bedroom would be her right if she wishes it.

Islamic republic Justice = Justice for rich
by Roozbeh_Gilani on Wed May 18, 2011 12:59 PM PDTThat would exclude vast majority of Iranians who are living below poverty line, and most middle to upper class Iranians.
Which would leave khamenei, ahmadinezhad, their extended family and cronies to enjoy their own justice, islamist style at their "islamist paradise".
"Personal business must yield to collective interest."
