Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that the judiciary was investigating Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf's accusation that 300 trees had been cut or burnt down at one of two British embassy compounds in the Iranian capital >>>

Being Busy Preparing For His Presidential Campaign,
by G. Rahmanian on Tue Nov 01, 2011 04:07 PM PDTBeing Busy Preparing For Presidential Campaign, Mr. Ghalibaf should have asked one of his gardners to file the suit against the British embassy. What a waste of time for him and for us to even be discussing this worthless piece of news!!!

A cynical act for a man serving a government that executes
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Tue Nov 01, 2011 03:09 PM PDT1000's of it's own. How can he live with a clear conscience, trying to buy IRI legitimacy?
People need to leave and save themselves (not a shameful act) or work together to restore the Monarchy and help care for the country once again.
He's got the look!
by statira on Tue Nov 01, 2011 01:51 PM PDTTo be honest, Ahmadinejad, if not better, was not as bad as previous President, Khatami and previous prime minster, Mousavi. He was just extremely ugly and shabby. Qalibaf does not have that issue and that's a big point.
Have You No Shame?
by Delavar1 on Tue Nov 01, 2011 01:33 PM PDTHave you no shame Mr. Qalibaf? How about your President and your Leader Ka\hamenei? Have they no shame? Your Islamic Regime in Iran (IRR) has been cutting people's throat, beheading political prisoners, hanging the innocent for over 30 years of ominous years of the Islamic republic. Now you are worried about a few trees being cut in the British Embassy? What a shame!!
Qalibaf is a good manager and a good mayor
by aynak on Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:30 PM PDTAnyone who has visited Tehran in recent years can see, he had done a lot for the city, both in terms of clean up, beautifying the city and also expansion of highways/roads/tunnels etc. What has impressed me the most is the project he takes on usually have a "completion date" on red neon light displayed, which is updated daily. The few I had tracked over time have been done and completed usually within times. On one occasion, the porject missed the taget by a month, and he apologized for that. (how is that? can you imagine if Khamanehee was smart enough to apologize to public when he fucked up, and fixed the issue, instead of killing people?). This degree of self accountability is unheard of Iran.
choghok jan, forget about
by hamsade ghadimi on Tue Nov 01, 2011 11:47 AM PDTchoghok jan, forget about the embassy being recognized as soil of that country. how can a mayor of a city sue another government based on that country's action within their embassy? isn't that in the jurisdiction of vezarat omoor kharejeh? can you imagine mayor of washington d.c. suing russia? this is simply political grand-standing with the backing of iran's shadow government.
Doesn't British embassy land counts as British soil?
by choghok on Tue Nov 01, 2011 08:17 AM PDTUsually the embassies are counted as soil of that country, and also if not then the garden is not owned by Tehran municipality so how can they be sued?
I also think this is a political action, fighting British for getting votes.
there are talks of cutting
by hamsade ghadimi on Tue Nov 01, 2011 07:42 AM PDTthere are talks of cutting down the trees in pahlavi/vali asr avenue to widen it. the government has already made a portion of this street one-way to facilitate the baseej and sepah to move unabated when quashing dissenters. as concerned as i am about the environment, trees in iran, trees in general, etc., i'm more concerened about human lives prematurely ending in the hands of the so-called local and national leaders of iran.
i agree with jj that ghalibaf's action is politically motivated and he's not necessarily one of the "few people in iran who care about its environment."
Early campaigning
by Jahanshah Javid on Tue Nov 01, 2011 07:25 AM PDTThere's still a year and a half left until the next presidential elections but it's hard not to see Qalibaf's actions as preparation for his eventual/expected candidacy. And what could generate more attention than taking on the British?
There are few people in Iran who care about its environment.
by Mohammad Ala on Tue Nov 01, 2011 07:18 AM PDTI hope this does not get resolved behind the curtain without planting replacement trees. Saving trees is an important issue to few Iranians.... just take a walk in Tehran you will observe that the majority of Iranians do NOT care.
We have ruthless people who do NOT give a damn about the environment and the creatures that live in it. Our people are aggressively maximizing their wealth by hook or crook so that one day they will immigrate and take their wealth with them…. Then people wonder why Iran does not get better.
