Iranians disqualified for refusing to wrestle Israelis

No-shows at Istanbul 2011 world wrestling championship

Two Iranian wrestlers, Mohsen Hajipour and Ghasem Rezaei, refused to compete with their Israeli competitors at the World Wrestling Championships in Istanbul. This slip shows Rezaei as a no show, and his Israeli competitor Robert Avanesyan wins. Rezaei won a Bronze medal in 2007, and he was considered a medal hopeful again this year:

Killing vs. occupying

by bparhami on

Why is killing your own citizens considered more honorable than occupying someone else's land?

China has been occupying Tibet for decades. Russia has been occupying Chechnya for decades. Morocco has been occupying Western Sahara for decades. Sudan has been occupying Darfur for decades. And in each case the occupiers have committed massacres of the indigenous people, during various periods of these of occupations.

So is it your view that IR (being such a shining example of Human Rights and respector of human life that it is) should get on its high horse and refuse to allow its sportsmen to compete against the Chinese, Russians, Moroccan and the Sudanese? Or does this only apply to Israel?

PS: Many Arabs/Arab countries believe Iran is occupying the Persian Gulf Islands of Abu Musa, Greater and Lesser Tunbs, not to mention even the province of Khuzestan. Now, whether they are right or not (and we believe they are talking out of their backsides), that is their belief. So should they boycot sporting competitions against Iran?

There are many countries

by Reality-Bites on

With far more violations of human rights and killings on their hands than Israel in this world. One of them is the Islamic Republic itself.

So, should that mean sportsmen of other countries ought to start picking and choosing which countries' sportsmen/women they should compete against based on the political actions of their respective governments? If so, there will hardly be any international sporting competitions taking place anywhere and Iran will itself be boycotted by many other countries.

If the wrestlers chose to refuse to compete against the Israelis by themselves, then they are as narrow-minded, idiotic and backwardly dogmatic as the present regime in Iran. And this would be also the case for any foreign sportsmen refusing to compete against Iranians. But, like I said, it is far more likely this decision was made by the IR.

Syrian Gov. is totalitarian but it is not an occupier

...and no "equal opportunity killing machine" that Israel is and has been for 60 years!

Again, look at the list of the countries whose citizens have been killed by Israel: Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Palestine, Lebanon and list grows....

No one has a carte blanche like Israel when it comes to killing. Don't take it from me. Take it from Turkish Erdogan!

im sure you would have no problem with Iranians wrestling Syrians. 2500 killed in just 6 months. hypocrite

Israel is an apartheid entity and a rouge state

by Disenchanted on

It needs to be boycotted by international community. Just count the countries that their citizens have been killed by Israelis in past two years: Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, Iran (scientists) and more...

Iranian athletes are doing the ultimate sacrifice to uphold humanity values. In an ideal world Israel would be banned from these competitions.

Perperizi, thanks for explaining

If they had to play with a new name e.g. State of  Occupied Palestine athletes, would that help?

Iranian athletes are not allowed to compete against Israeli athletes by the Regime, even in the sports that do not require physical contact like swimming or track and field. So usually at the last minute, the Iranian athlete pulls out blaming injury or something else.

They cannot pull out of the competition based on political reasons because that is against the spirit of athletics and fair play, and they would be banned from the sport by the international federation.

So they just pray that they would not face an Israeli athlete.

Totally screwed up!

Tiger Lily

But why?

by Tiger Lily on

Why did they refuse?

Where's the report?

Wipe Iranian Athletes off the Wrestling Mat!

by Faramarz on

Instead of talking about, "wiping Israel off the map", let the Iranian athletes compete and "kick their asses on the mat!"

The drip, drip of the demise of the Regime continues.

I support and applaud their decision ...

by Bavafa on

if it was made on a free will and as a result of their own convictions.Just like IRI criminals need to be sanctioned by the world as a whole, Israel as a State needs to be sanctioned much the same for their crimes against Palestinians. It will take much to put your career and you love for a sport aside and stand up for your principals.  So, if it was done on their own free will and based on their own principals then my hat off to them.

I doubt if this was the wrestler's own decision

by Reality-Bites on

Not with the IR always deciding sporting participation by the country's sportsmen.

If nothing else, news like this will cheer up the Israeli obsessives here and elsewhere.

Fantastic Result

by Simorgh5555 on

Congratulations to the Israeli team.

What the athlete done was correct. I wish sporting bodies would organise more sporting competitions between Israel and the EVIL IR so that the latter can be disqualified.

I know there is huge pressure on Iranians sportsmen and women not to comepete with Israeli athletes so I'm holding this evil Terrorist regime in contempt.

The Islamic Republic is an Evil Terrorist Entity that does not represent Iran or the Iranian people. I urge all Iranian athletes not to compete under the banner of the Islamic Republic or salute its evil anthem when it plays.

Personally I would like to see the Islamic Republic ostracised from every single international event whether it be sports, art, industry or commerce. I welcome the IR decision to disqualify itself in the same way as I welcomed the decision of FIFA to ban the Iranian women soccer team for wearing the Hijab.

The Islamic Republic is worse than apartheid South Africa and deserves the same contempt.

Destroy the Islamic Republic. Condemn it. Fight it. Destroy it.

TWO IDIOTS .....

If Mohsen Hajipour and Ghasem Rezaei made this move on their own and without any IRI influence or pressure, then these two are the worst athletics ever .... TWO IDIOTS .....

bparhami

Why not?

by bparhami on

Why not mix politics with sports, when, according to IRI, it is mixed with everything else: eating, dressing, talking, singing, walking in the park, and so on? I don't know if these two guys believed in not wrestling Israelis, or did it to protect their careers and livelihoods in IRI.

I cannot figure it out why Iranians are doing this. Please don't mix politics with sports
