BBC: Iranian officials say 60 people have been arrested in protests calling for the government to save a shrinking lake in the north-west of the country. Lake Orumiyeh, one of the world's largest salt lakes, has lost more than half its surface area in 20 years due to drought and the damming of rivers. A local MP says if the lake disappears it will leave behind 10bn tonnes of salt and displace millions of people. An emergency rescue plan for the lake was rejected by parliament last month >>>

Dorood Bar Azaris for Standing Up for Their Rights
by Mort Gilani on Sun Sep 04, 2011 07:42 PM PDTThis impending environment catastrophe would indirectly affect the welfare of non-Azari Iranians as well. The Islamic Republic has so far successfully portrayed the effects of lake dry-up a local issue. And, in my view, most non-Azari Iranians have not yet given the matter the attention it deserves. If non-Azari Iranians don’t lend their support to Azaris before this looming disaster, they should not be disheartened when Azaris look elsewhere for support. And, support they would get from Baku and Ankara.

Not joining Urmia and Tabriz is another loss opportunity
by afshinazad on Sun Sep 04, 2011 09:47 AM PDTNot joining Urmia and Tabriz is another loss opportunity, every time I go Iranian websites and I see the frustration of people about silence and no one is making move and any riots or demonstration against this satanic regime. Well folks you have lost two opportunities by not joining your country man and women in Azerbaijan.
For the people like PENAR NIK, your comment is insult for those who got killed in Urmia and Tabriz, did you know that 25 people were killed after election of 2009? Did you know that 65 university students are still in prison since then?
For those who think people of Azerbaijan wants to separate is you are dead wrong, yes there are so called intellectuals who are living with past and they think they could separate Azerbaijan, but mass majority doesn’t think like them.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't
by TheMrs on Sun Sep 04, 2011 09:29 AM PDTAzaris have been at the forefront of every nationalist movement in Iran. And they were present in the post election unrest. To say that their involvement in local issues is alarming is an ignorant comment.
Being involved in local issues doesn't make you "sensitive". I getted pissed when there's no garbage collection in my city when there's a strike. That doesn't mean I want to break up a country.
Having said that, the right to self determination belongs to everyone especially if they have to constantly prove themselves.

That was a genuine question. I was not trying to demean him in any way. I have never bought booze for a guy and I don't drink and usually don't like people who need to drink to get things out of their chest.
I appreciate your valiant effort in defending Pendari but I disagree with you on all counts but don't feel like writing a long winded rebuttle. It is just not worth my time or yours..

by Former Fish on Sat Sep 03, 2011 06:54 PM PDTI don't condone this, but Pendar Nik is not the only person who believes Azaris did not come to the aid of the Green Movement in 2009. Just do a simple google search in Farsi and you will find many articles written about this very subject and the reasons for it.
With all the respect I have for you from reading your comments and contributions, I am a little taken aback with your personal attacks on Pendar Nik and what makes you justified in doing this.
"Pendari: Do you have a drinking problem? Seriously? It fits your M.O." This is a personal attack on him. Also, this comment is full of personal attacks on him: "Nik Pendari, it seems like you have a problem with anyone who defies or threatens Velayate Faghih leadership. That said, even the usual apologists are starting to run out of room. Caught between a rock and a hard place - these smug self-centred lounge lizards are rapidly just becoming exposed as the hypocritical squirming snakes in Syria and Lebanon. When are you going to stop supporting the IRI??"
As a reader of Iranian.com, I don't think Pendar Nik is an IRI supporter. I do believe that he hates their guts as much as anybody else does, but his approach and views are different. But even if he supports the Islamic Republic, should he be called names?
Azeri's were not totally absent during the green movement
by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on Sat Sep 03, 2011 06:17 PM PDTThey just did not feel as offended by the mullahs rigging the vote, they already knew the mullahs are the most corrupt, dirty crooks in town,so they never took IRI elections as seriously as the patsys around the country which were offended.
Inviting the mullahs to administer a government is like asking a child molester to look after your child. Azeri's see it, tehrani's see it, mashadi's see it and all Iranians see it,

Azarbaijan
by Rastgoo on Sat Sep 03, 2011 05:08 PM PDTAzarbaijan is home to our country's greatest modern movement: the constitutional revolution. Azaris like Satar Khan, Bagher Khan, Kasravi and Hedayat are Iranian national Icons. Every modern revolution in Iran has started from Azarbaijan: the constitutional revolution and the 1979 revolution that was hijacked by the Islamists. I really hope that this is the beginning of Azari involvement in the Green movement and this doesn't turn into an Azari separatist movement. What do our fellow Azaris on Iranian.com think? What are the slogans?
