Afshin Ighani: Prisoner of the day

Bahai imprisoned for "propaganda against the state"

RAHANA: Afshin Ighani, a shopkeeper and a Bahai citizen in the city of Semnan, was first arrested at his home in Semnan on January 6, 2010. Afshin Ighani was transferred to Semnan Prison where he was detained for two months. He was released on bail of $150,000 on February 28, 2010. He was arrested once again in September 2011, in order to begin serving his sentence.

The Semnan Revolutionary Court charged Afshin Ighani with “propaganda against the state to benefit opposition groups," and "membership in groups aiming to disrupt national security” and sentenced him to four years, three months, and one day in prison. Ighani’s sentence ruling reflected that his prior detention would be counted toward his sentence and that based on determination by Intelligence Ministry agents, all his assets related to his charges would be confiscated.

Afshin Ighai was arrested on September 12, 2010 and was transferred to Semnan Prison. A few days after his arrest, the Intelligence Ministry sealed his shop in Semnan.

Another Bahai compatriot being jailed...

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

Just because of his religious beliefs.

All the Bahais I have met (since leaving Iran, as I used to hate & avoid them when I was back home...) are peaceful folks, strong believers in education and science and rather apolitical. Only a Fascistic intolerant regime as Islamic regime of Iran would treat these folks so badly...

Sample Protest letter:

Dear friends of IC, please take a moment to send this protest letter or use your own version.

Please keep in mind that for us, in our priviliged position: free and outside of Iran and IR's jails, and with acess to internet, it's only a few moments work, but for our political prisoners  back home it would make a big difference. Many thanks in advance.

Free Afshin Ighani!

I (we) am (are) writing this to condemn persecution and harrasment of religious minorities in Iran.  Religious minorities in Iran are being
constantly harassed and arrested by the Iranian government authorities.

In particular, this letter is written to express my (our) serious
concern about the health and well being of Mr. Afshin Ighani. An innocent  Bahai resident of Semnan who has
been  unjustly incarcerated, serving time on a  4 years sentence.

I (we) demand the immediate and unconditional
freedom of Mr. Afshin Ighani, and all other political prisoners,
and call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect the right of all
Iranians to  , organize, assemble and freedom of religion, association and
expression.

Religous freedom is part of basic human rights and IRI has been in violation of those rights for 33 years now.  A campaign by all concern Iranians for their immediate and unconditional freedom is necessary and a must.

My hats off to each and every one of these brave souls for standing up for their rights.

'Hambastegi' is the main key to victory
