Millions of years ago, Anatolia was part of the sea, surrounded by green forests. Later, the continuous eruptions of volcanos structured Mid-Anatolia Plateau with masses of lava and ash. Over the years, the variety of rocks were affected differently by erosion. Interesting canyons and the well-known Cappadocia Fairy Chimneys are the result of this process. High rocky hills offered a safe shelter to many, who made their homes in these mountains and entered their cave-like habitats by rope.
On my recent tour of Turkey, we saw Cappadocia first on foot, and then from a hot-air balloon during the early hours of dawn.
