Iranian.com reaches new milestone

by Foaad Khosmood
13-Oct-2010

Late last month, Iranian.com reached a milestone: member #10,000 successfully registered with the site. Since we inaugurated this version of the site in June, 2007, we have had a steady increase in number of registered members. The pace of new account sign-ups accelerated once it became necessary to register in order to leave comments. See contributors.

We thought we could take this opportunity to update some other important figures and trends about the site and its users. Most of these are from our database and from Google Analytics.

From 1995 to 2007, Iranian.com had generated approximately 215,000 pages in form of HTML files. Almost all of these remain visible today as archives. See, for example the September 1995 edition. Since June of 2007, we have added approximately 105,000 Web 2.0 nodes consisting of articles, blog entries, albums, etc. This means Iranian.com has roughly about 320,000 proper visible web pages on the Internet. If we count image and music files, it would probably be more than half a million URLs. Also since June of 2007, the site has generated about 3,700 articles, 16,400 blog entries, 52,000 images and just over 300,000 comments.

Cool! i.com needs concerts in more states than just CA!

by Anonymouse on

So of the 30 votes in my belog 9,970 users didn't vote?!  So what will happen if i.com reaches 100,000 registered users? Will there be a party or will JJJ get rich or something?!

Everything is sacred

Q

Gilani, you are another Iranian genius!

by Q on

So much brains, such impeccable logic! No wonder you have to hide yourself, you are too valuable for Iran and future generations of the world to jeapardize your life!

Oh, as that miniscule 0.3% who "magically" get past the filters, that very well explains some of the regular commentators, on this site who have such tender heart for Khamenei, mahmood bi-mokh, islamist terrorists and so much hate for Iranian people's struggle for freedom..

Javid, that's exactly it. So, let block even the 0.3%, block out Iran completely, to make sure secret freedom fighting hamvatans like Roozeh Gilani feel safe to make their valuable contributions after their annual summer visits!

Roozbeh_Gilani

So there are actually 0.3% traffic from Iran??!!!!

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

I tried using I.c. from Iran last time I was back home in July, and could not get through the filters, It is very well filtered, I can assure you, so JJ bask in the glory!

Oh, as that miniscule 0.3% who magically get past the filters, that very well explains some of the regular commentators,  on this site who have such tender heart for Khamenei, mahmood bi-mokh, islamist terrorists and so much hate for Iranian people's struggle for freedom..

Thanks IC team all the same, you are providing iranians with a rare platform to express their views without ending up at Evin (well, with a few notable exceptions...). I urge you to not to bow to the threats of "legal actions" by islamists on this site and allow the Iranian people to continue to express our opinions.

Foaad Khosmood

Thanks all for reading!

by Foaad Khosmood on

Thanks everybody for reading and commenting.

One things is that our 10,000 registered members are a small fraction of our total readership. By far most of the visits to the site are by people who do not have accounts. About one third of the people are regular visitors, one third come in through search engines and the rest come through other websites that have links to us.

The front page is by far the most popular destination. There are many links (about 175-200 links) on our front page at any one time. This means that the huge audience that comes to the front page and chooses to continue going to different pages gets divided into smaller portions, so each secondary page gets a much smaller share of the audience.

We can probably improve this if we feature less items on the front page.

Flying Solo,

Yes, the statistics from Google Analytics do not consider registration. So among the people who come to the site every day a small portion is registered users.

The "reads" counters we have on the blog entries and articles go up every time someone visits the page, regardless of that person being registered or unregistered or having already visited the page once. It does mean that you visiting your own page, for example, will add extra "reads". But this is how almost all counters on the Internet work. In practice, for any popular pages, this is not significant. The aggregate statistics of people who visit the page just once always strongly dominates the few who visit it many times.

Thanks for holding the mirror for us. Those of us who find the image foggy should stop breathing so closely.

surely suggest that iranian.com should be renamed iranianexpats.com?

Q

Interesting indeed

by Q on

Vistors from Iran on any website named "iranian.com" being only 0.3% is perfect proof that the site is blocked in Iran. Frankly, I thought there would be higher numbers getting through the filters.

AO, despite yourself, you might actually be onto something. I wouldn't put it past Israeli spy agencies to fake their online origin information as a tactic. Of course, we all know the real "Zionist agents" on this site, have well represented stats! //iranian.com/main/image/123682

Javid and crew, thanks for sharing. But I have to agree without a policy of enforcing only one account per person, your stats could be grossly unreliable. In addition, "anonymous" losers like Dirty Angel would be exposed for the hypocrites they truly are.

I didn't want to disappoint

by AmirKabir on

I didn't want to disappoint you, but I think from these 10,000 registered members 9,000 are repeat registrations due to blocking , usernames, passwords and other issues.  So in reality, there are 1000 members, from whom about 50 are posting comments regularly.  and I think Iranian.com should send a check to these 50 commentators, otherwise, there wouldn't be no comments on any of the blogs.

Flying Solo

Stats

by Flying Solo on

Thanks for compiling the stats.

There are 10,000 registrants. But then we have a mere 100 or so who leave the majority of the comments. Others simply read, which is fine.  But to read one need not register. Question is whether those who are not registered but simply read also are counted in your stats.

Also, I recently found out that each time I visit my own blog to read a comment left there, the count on the blog goes up. So, the number appearing as the 'count' is not the number of unique 'readers' who have visited my blog.  It is potentially falsely exaggerated by revisits by me and others. I would be interested in the number of unique hits on my blogs. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks for all your hard work IC team.  Here is wishing you a successful fundraiser.

I almost forgot!

I'm sure there are many people behind the scene who keep this site up and running but .......

I must mention "Ghorme Sabzi" for a wonderful job she's doing :-)

Khasteh nabaashi!

Dirty Angel

Cloud cuckooland! Seriously off your rockers!!!

by Dirty Angel on

Traffic on this site is ZILCH compared to what I get as an anonymous blogger out there somewhere.

A lot of "registered users" have a minimum of 5 accounts (and certainly more...).

Seriously, what world do you reside in?

I'll bite my fingers, once you get a a MINIMUM of traffic of 30 thousand per day. (And I haven't mentioned revenue yet...)

All due to idiotic, LAZY , MOFTKHOR mismanagement!

However, YES, its idiocy is addicitvie...But very easily replaced!

Wait, wait, I don't see Tel Aviv on the "world cities" map

by Anonymous Observer on

so, does that mean that Sargord and his friends' constant BS about Israelis taking over this site, and especially Sargord's comparison of working hours in Israel with the timing of Fred's blogs is total BS?!!

Oh, I forgot.  I should remember the source of those claims...they've GOT to be BS....

OR, it could be that Israeli agents are actually hiding in Iran and are writing from there...kind of like when they were running around in the streets and shooting Neda and other protesters. :-))

shows relatively high percentage from Mashhad and Zahedan. Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz produce much less. IRI is blocked in Iran so they all come from proxies. Given likely less bandwidths, speeds and longer distance and delays from proxy locations (Turkey, Europe, U.S. Australia) make Mashahd and Zahedan numbers even more impressive (unless somehow there is less effective or restrictive filtering).

31 & 32 show path to improvement specially if connected to the visitors from Iran who have to make extra effort to get here. That is the crowd that will act as liaison at eventful periods. You can further connect that to the peaks since june 2009 and extract even more insight.

Can you just imagine if we had a bit of unity among ourselves, how much more we could have accomplished.

Nevertheless, congrats to JJ & his crew for their accomplishment.

With the hopes of more unity and less infighting.

Thanks for posting Google analytics data

If I should make one suggestion, I'd say:

You need to focus on getting readership from Iran. Probably having Persian vs English info more clarified and marketing on sites frequented by those in Iran would help.

Fantastic report!

by Nazy Kaviani on

Foaad, this is great! I learned so much just by reading the explanations you provided for each image. Who'd have ever thought that people from Lar and Sabzevar keep us company on Iranian.com?!!

As a humble member of this community, allow me, please, to take this opportunity to thank you Foaad Jan for being the best admin anyone could ever dream of knowing, and for being a very special human being. (I think I will come back to look at some of those charts again!)

Better than I thought

by Jahanshah Javid on

Thanks Foaad for compiling these numbers. It gives new perspective on what's happened and happening here.

I had not looked at iranian.com's stats since 2007, except once or twice. But basically I never check. I don't want to be influenced by numbers. I just want to do the best I can and feel good about it.

confirming my thesis that most viewers live outside Iran. (I do wonder how many Iranians inside use proxy to access this site.)
