Photo essay: Thousands in Tehran defy ban on protest demonstrations

by AmirPix

Protests against election results still continues in Tehran after about 5 months since presidential elections. Thousands of people demonstrated downtown and police forces attacked them with tear gas and batons. It seems central streets of Tehran is still convulsive >>> demotix.com

BBC:  Security forces have used batons and tear gas to disperse opposition supporters in the Iranian capital, Tehran, witnesses and state media say. Unconfirmed reports said the authorities had also opened fire. Video footage and photos showed what appeared to be large crowds of opposition supporters being chased by security forces in riot gear. It came as an officially backed demonstration was held to mark 30 years since the seizure of the US embassy. Thousands were present at the anti-American rally, about 1.5km (1 mile) from where opposition supporters gathered in Haft-e Tir square. Other groups turned out in other parts of the capital to voice their opposition to the regime >>>

Neda ye Iran e Azad

Let me say...

by Neda ye Iran e Azad on

Consider the 1979 revolution as a funnel. All different groups and ideas went into the wide end but only the Islamic group came out, followed by suppressing all movements that were working parallel to it. Now the green movement is like trying to get into the narrow end in hope of coming out of the wide end. I understand that there are opposition movements against the current regime, but realistically, how integrated are they or how much they can represent themselves inside Iran? I am pro Green movement because I see it as a great chance. Not because of what the so called leaders say, but because I see people are practicing a new movement. They are getting involved and becoming creative in spreading information and creating large gatherings. Since the usual methods of opposition and revolution were used over 30 years ago, and are familiar for the regime, we need new and creative ways, and the green movement is a great chance to practice and progress new methods. I am sure, when the time comes, the right slogans will replace Mousavi and Karoubi's name. I lived in Iran long enough to understand how smart and experienced our people are. I trust them and support them with the movement they are practicing but I think Iranians outside Iran really underestimate the people inside the country. Demonstrating in Government holiday days is a very intelligent tactic and not hopeless following of Mousavi.

Now the BAD NEWS

by Maziari on

The last few months proved that there are substantial numbers of PROGRESSIVE and courageous people in Iran who can TAKE OVER and pull Iran out of the black hole it is in!

The Problem is that they do not have the FORCE necessary to combat the WELL PAID regime thugs who will not give-in to peaceful demonstrations. The regime will not fall with allah-o-akbar chants!

If not FORCED out, it will eventually FALL, after it has completely destroyed Iran’s economy and integrity and any chance for prosperity. It will first become a FAILED economic state (SOVIET style) and then disintegrate.

Either the SOG movement can take the Civil Disobedience to the next level and cause mass strikes, paralyzing the regime or not. If it were able to cause nation wide strikes, then the regime would not be able to feed its thugs and would fall. Unfortunately, the regime through its IRGC thugs, controls substantial portions of the economy and strikes in sensitive areas are less likely. If 13 Aban is any indication, it showed that SOG may not be able to cause mass strikes and bring the millions out to streets, then the remaining options are not so peaceful.

What needs to happen is to STRIKE the regime where it hurts the most, at its economic muscle. This means severe economic sanctions coupled with external and internal strikes at regime’s wealth producing devices. That is, oil production and export facilities and IRGC controlled major industries.

American Dream

The Shah, the CIA and 1953

by American Dream on

According to the Iranian constitution before the 1979 revolution the Shah could dismiss a government official br a royal decree called a farmaan.

The Shah did that in 1953.  The Shah dismissed Prime Minister Mossadegh.

America and the CIA in 1953 just aided its ally Iran.

It is time for truth.

Ali Akbar

we still must look for PEACFUL means to force...

by Ali Akbar on

regime change from an Islamic Theocracy to some form of secular democracy that has managed to exist in Turkey since WWII

The CIA blew it in the 1950's when they forced the monarchy onto the Iranian people then... Perhaps today the international community will learn from past mistakes and allow the PEOPLE OF IRAN to choose their own government...

By discounting the leadership of the Green Movement as nominal players is like saying there would still be a protest if there was no Karubi or Mousavi.  You must be confused.  Without the Iranian elections in June 2009, without the re-election of Ahmadinejad, there would be no mass protest.  Don't try to muddy the waters.  Every Iranian knows what is really happening.  Karoubi has recently said that he is following the true path of Ayat'Allah Khomayni.  And that is all that a secular Iranian has to hear to be angry.

Listen loud and clear, the green movement is irrelevant the theocracy is irrelevant and Mousavi and Karoubi are irrelevant.  30 years of theocracy are enough.

The only thing that can bring real change to Iran is a NATO ground invasion, aerial bombing and a blockade of the shores of Iran to prevent the sale of any export Iran delivers anywhere.  Pakistan, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkmanistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia, who are all American allies will have to take part in this land assault.

This is the only way to free Iran from the theocracy.

On a somber note... Let us look at what would be the result:

probably something like this:

Thank you, Mona, for the article link. I read the whole story, it is tragically beautiful! It is the best article about Neda I have read so far. Thank you! This part (words of Neda's mom) makes me super sad and upset:

"People go and write on her grave in red ink the word 'martyr,'" she said, "and then the authorities go and wipe it off."

Neda's mom is very sweet & down-to-earth, she always thanks people around world, always!

thanks,

Sharp shooters!!!

by Reza-Rio de Janeiro on

First of all, Hezaar Aafareen bar mardome Daleere Iran fighting the pure EVIL with empty hands, but with full hearts... Fighting an Evil Islamic regime and forces that are beating, killing and... our defenseless Iranian women, men and children shamelessly in the name of EVIL...

Now more than ever, Iranians need guns to protect themselves better and sharp shooters from roof tops to kill these Evil Basiji and Islamic forces on the ground! I swore, you kill 20 of these bastards in one day, and lets see if they have the balls to come back on the streets again!!!

Even an empty handed Iranian will eventually defeat the dark evil forces of these bastardized muslims in Iran... How I wished our brave Iranian people could hurt these evil Islamic forces equally now!!!!

And finally, American Dream! You again? How many times did we tell you to come back on this Iranian website when you decide earning an honest living first??? Stop your stupid calls on these poor young people... majority of these kids were not even born when those Evil and bastardized islamists took Americans hostages in Iran for 444 days... This is not the time and place for your selfish and personal vendetta... No true Iranian back then and now agreed or agrees in hostage taking of any foreign nationalities in Iran and breaking the international laws and codes of human conduct...

Free Iran and Iranians from these bastard muslims forever.

American Dream

by Neda ye Iran e Azad on

Since you have no Iranian dream (!) I suggest you go back to your American style day dreaming. Why do you bother anyways? American dream is a very personal view of life but Iranian dream holds every Iranian in it. The ones who are green and the ones who are not labeled but their heart is beating for their country and their people.

Sweet dreams.

Hello Obama. Wake up United Nation.

Do you see what is happenning there in iran?? twice now for oil Iran has been steped on and many live has been lost. you owe it to Iranian people for over throwing its democratically elected president in the 50's. and then the shah that was brought to power by Brits and USA was overthrown. How many more wars and lives does it take to satisfy the thirst for oil. look at the young americans dying in Iraq, look at the Iranains dying in the hands of the islamic regime. where is UN, what is it doing about the blod shed in Iran. why humen rights, killings, rapes and tortures of Iranians was not disscussed when 5+1 met with Islamic regime.

Who are the leaders of the Green Movement?

They are the people who brought us the Iranian revolution and the American hostage crisis.

The Green movement leaders and its followers should be beaten for 444 days.

I wish you had pixelated these courageous faces.  A lot of people were recognized and picked up because of similar pictures in the last few months. I was glad to see many using masks and glasses, I think we should also be more careful and protect these brave people who are running to the streets and voicing their protest faced with such brutal crack downs.

Thank you for the pictures
