I went to see Mansour Taeed, actor, director, and playwright at his home in Berkeley this evening. Mansour was rehearsing for his upcoming shows in Santa Clara, Los Angeles, and San Diego [see calendar]. His play, Ma Jasoos Neesteem has already been staged twice in Berkeley.

Taboo

by Ali Lakani on

The part of what Mansour Taeed says about the challenge of getting non-bahai people to come and see his play is true.  I can imagine that some people may not want to be seen attending this play fearing that they might be mistaken for bahais!  Or that they will somehow be magically "converted" to bahai faith if they sat through a two hour play!  People can't even bring themselves to leave a supportive comment for this artist's work here, fearing that they would somehow be condoning the Bahai faith!

This is the taboo which has only become bolder and stronger over the past thirty years with all the negative garbage about 'bahai lifestyle' which has been unleased on Iranian people. This is precisely the kind of ignorance this play is trying to overcome.

While I can almost understand how an Iranian in rural Iran might not want to learn about this subject after hearing decades of lies about the bahais, I would like to know what is the excuse for all the educated people who now live in the US?

Mansour Taeed should be commended for his courage to stand up and say something about a taboo which has brought nothing but shame to Iranians of any faith.  We should all go see his show.

dear Nazy, this is a very great photo essay.  I wish I were there to attend Taeed's show. The few acts I have seen on the web, were amazing.

I want to add also that I love the tilte you chose for this article. "Understanding" is really the name for the whole content of this subject.

Thank you.
