You really put your finger on the main issue in this election. It is not a matter of Democrat or Republican. I am personally neither. I decide in a case by case basis what I support or oppose. The danger now is an ideology coming to power in a mass hysteria that can seriously damage the foundations of world greatest democracy for decades to come if not for ever. You mentioned the wealth distribution crap they have in mind for us. There are more issue. The kind of connections this guy has now and in his past raise serious national security issues in such dangerous times. Even worse is the the talk about forming a "Civilian National Security Force" the as powerful and well funded as the military. This is indeed troubling. I wonder where all those cries against the Patriot Act are gone now? The Patriot Act was bad enough, but this is truly frightening.

With all due respect, you are totally wrong about Obama. You should like part of what he is saying he will do. 

1. Regarding his "socialism": We threw $1.3 trillion at Wall Street because of their incompentence and greed (mark my words: the Wall Street bailout will need close to $5 trillion); we have wasted $600 billion for an illegal and immoral war, and still counting; we give huge tax breaks to oil companies that are making obsene amounts of money (Exxon just announced that it had net profit of $15 billion for the 3rd quarter); we throw billions of dollars at agri-business every year, not to the small farmer who is trying to make ends meet, but to giant agri-corporations; we even give billions to TOBACCO growers; we are bailing out car companies which have refused to compete with Japanese for making more efficient cars; we have rescused airlines, we have ......

Now, Obama has talked about cutting the tax for anybody who makes below $250000/year, and raise it for the rest. The median income in the US is in the 40s. So, this covers about 97% of all tax payers. Now, one is either below the threshold or above it. If he/she is below it, he/she does not have anything to worry about. If he/she is above it, he/she can certainly afford it, after 7 years of huge tax break by Bush.

So socialism is good only to make wars and rescue the corporations? Come to think of it, this is a good title for my next article!

2. Regarding war: I am absolutely positively not crazy about Obama. He might have his heart in the right place, but what I understand, which many might not, is that, when it comes to the foreign policy, the strategic objectives of the US are the same, regardless of who is the president. Obama or McCain will be constrained by the same constraints as any US president.

But, more specificially, Obama wants to,

(a) escalate the war in Afghanistan. Mark my words: The US president must decide soon: Either to pull out like the Soviets did in 1989, or be defeated militarily. There will be no military "victory" in Afghanistan. There can only be a political solution.

(b) have hot pursuits in Pakistan of the radicals, even if Pakistan if opposed to it. That is extremely dangerous in a nation with nuclear bomb, and a military - that is supposedly an ally of the US - whose Interservices Intelligence is actually backing the Taliban, despite US giving them $11 billion since 2002.

(c) increase the size of the US Army by 92,000; what for?

(d) increase military spending significantly, above the $673 billion for 2009, the largest US military budget, in real $$, since 1952.

(e) spend significantly to form a WORLDWIDE intelligence agency for supposedly tracking down terrorists," without first defining who is a terrorist, anyway.

Mark also my words: Obama may attack Iran, something that Bush seems to have passed on. He will first try to negotiate, but with terms which will be impossible for ANY Iranian leader to accept (because the strategic goal of the US is for Iran to surrender), and once the negotiations did not go anywhere, he will have the "moral" authority to attack.

So, Obama actually scares me when it comes to foreign policy.

But you seem, with all due respect, to repeat verbatim the absurds that the ultra-right is saying about Obama.

Frustrated? Read, read, and read, and then make an informed decision. But, by reading I do not mean certain sites and publications. Every issue, every story, has two sides or many sides. So, you must listen to the two sides, or, more precisely, to all sides. Every single day I spend a lot of time reading, and I read everything, from Israeli newspapers (Haaretz in particular), to Iranians, to left and right in the US, to whatever.

Instead of being so depressed about Obama outshining McCain for 2 years straight, let's remember it's the weekend before the election, which means Republican cheating is well under way. Have you noticed how much Sarah Palin defends her optimism by stating "when people go into those booths, their wisdom will be revealed." So cryptic..... so either we are wise because Obama wins, or we're "wise" because Republicans contract right wing nuts with election technology. Or we're wise because in a booth, we secretly realize that we LOVE Sarah and Mr.Geriatric nightmare.

My dear , I have class , brain, ethics , logic & yes looks to go with it . I don,t need profanity to acknowledge myself , Never did, never will . Regardless of our viewpoints you have my utmost respect. My post was never intended to offend anyone. It looks like I have not quite succeeded at my attempt at sarcasm. Never claimed to be fluent or eloquent in expressing opinion like many other posters on this site, like Zion, Jamshid, Mammad, Q, Irandokht, …In all honesty, the piece I posted was not meant to grab any number of responses. It was what I sincerely felt (and still feel) about this election. I have a lot of passion around it.

Your parents are my symbol. I have been a democrat my entire life and have worshiped the democracy and freedom that this nation has stood for and hopefully will continue to stand for. However, this time around, I am extremely concerned. Of course it has nothing to do with race or even liberalism as long as we don’t fall into the trap of socialism the way Europe fell.

You may have a different opinion which I totally respect but I hope the rest of the crowd here are open minded enough to respect my view points.

There is no doubt we all are looking for the same ideals, it is just a matter of how to get there without losing our freedom and the privilege of our self determination..

You're right about the lazy comment.  I work my ass off.  Sometimes I get an opportunity to post all day long.   Sometimes I don't.  You're not paying one penny to support me... in the past or in the future.  I'm one of those motherfuckers who has worked their ass off since I was 16.  I am born and raised here and I know the diffference between what the Republicans have done during my lifetime and my parents lifetime... and what the Democrats have done and WILL do... God willing.  I pay my mortgage, I pay for my own medical plan, I've done both coke and grass and I'll leave it for the youngsters.  I've got a retirement account from a job I had for 22 years that is hardly worth the money it costs to print the report... unlike the years under Clinton when I actually thought the word "retirement" was in my future.

I got an email from my brother this afternoon... the title was "I'm proud of our parents".  78 and 80 years old respectively.  Living in the same small Southern town I was born and raised in.  We're talking REPUBLICAN country... I mean C O N S E R V A T I V E.  They are Democrats to the bone.  Suffered through WWII... blah blah blah.  My point being that they KNOW what living through depression, recession, regression, obsession, is all about.  They put an Obama/Biden sign in their front yard.  It was stolen and trash was dumped in their yard.  My Mom is making her own sign and nailing it to a tree.  My Dad stuck his Obama bumper sticker on his car. 

So yeah, I guess I'm not real crazy about someone trying to cram a shit sandwich down my throat about democracy, etc. etc.

ps... the comment about "brilliant" was not to reflect an intellectural reference to YOUR article.  I respect your opinion just as I assume  you respect mine.  I just find the word "brilliant" a little extreme...:-)

Me aside, Obama isn't winning people because of his slickness. He acknowledges that the Republicans who are voting for him expect him not to be a left-wing extremist, which he isn't. I haven't flagged anyone's comments, but when I read a vicious comment like Bijan's and the one that samsam wrote, I know the administrator will delete it. In the interest of not pissing off that user, they delete my response, even if it lacks an attack. It's a weird policy, but we have to pay the cost to use the site I guess. Bijan: Regarding Antarctica Plans

Aw Bijan I just noticed the antique dusting signature. I'm glad you see the humor in it. I also wonder if you understand how it felt for lots of liberals when George Bush won twice in a row!!! But the liberals were patriots and they stayed. There was no mass exodus. They remained, bought lots of stuff (helped the economy) such as computers, high-speed internet, ipods and cars. Along came the GOP majority Congress and President and away went the surplus. The GOP f-ed up and not just a little. It happens that we live in a democracy and they'll be voted out. Don't be so dramatic. We need voices like yours, dusty as they are. Instead of being a sore loser, stay here if you love America. I have been through this once in my life and am not prepared or equipped to go through it again. You turn USA into USSA and make it a satellite of Cuba or Venezuela or even Canada and I’m out of here.

I don’t have the courage, the stamina, the resources and (at almost 60) the time to fight it. You can have it all to yourself. I don’t know where I move to, maybe Israel (if it still exists and not taken over by liberals like Obama). Or, maybe ant-artica where I hopefully can have my free will.
