The Old and New Politics of Faith: Religion and the 2010 Election." This is the title of the new study by Brookings Institution on the role of faith in American politics.I found the following exchange from the Wednesday’s NPR interview with two of the Brookings Fellows to be the most profound of the survey’s results……as well as pretty much anything I had heard lately about religion and politics in America (scary, is how I describe it).
Question: But when you speak of American exceptionalism in these terms, what are you speaking of?
Answer (Mr. GALSTON): Well, the idea that America is a chosen nation that has been singled out by God for a distinctive mission in the world, we put a very strong version of that proposition on the table in this survey and 6 in 10 Americans affirmed it. Indeed, 30 percent of people who probably don't believe in God at all affirmed it. So, this is a remarkably persistent part of America's cultural and political DNA that I think our political leaders ignore at their peril.
Silly me, I thought it was the Islamic regime in Iran that had a mission to lead the world with Allah’s “help”...

I should explain further
by Escape on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:54 AM PSTAll Natives are Asian but my 'tribe' is a direct descendent from Asia..But my first question (Why are you here?) is about Anti-Americanism more than Religion.Because if it is not the 'Religious zealot's' in America,it's the System,it's the Capitalism,It's the war,it's the Media,it's never ending Anti-Americanism from people who live in America..I've still to make sense of this reasoning.Maybe it's part of my religious brainwashing that I don't understand why people who constantly complain about a country, decide to live in it.I guess as long as you are just mildly annoying it's ok..We can tolerate you as long as you can tolerate US..But just keep it that way..Don't flip out and start blowing up American Churches or turn into a Mcveigh.
Rea: You're welcome here as is any Atheist that is not problematic. There are two kinds of Atheist's,open minded and closed minded. They are two different approach's,I've only responded to the latter,everytime...

by Rea on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:36 AM PSTEven though this is purely "American" blog, Europeans are welcome too, I suppose.
FYI, I'm Croatian, a proud atheist from a catholic family.
And yes, have been on IC long enough to know.
I agree we are losing values
by Escape on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:33 AM PSTCompletely! After all we are the Great Satan.
Now you are completely of no use when it comes to bridging the Gap of the 'Great Satan' you reside in and the Middle East of which you descend.
Completely....
No direct threat?
by Cost-of-Progress on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:24 AM PSTAre you kidding?
Speaking of the constitution, it is constantly under attack by the so-called faihful as well as the constant complaining about "loosing values" in the country. All this when the biggest sex abuse in the history of mankind has been revealed by the church from Ireland to america to who knows where.
Read my post about Hukabee....I hope these nut case lunatic zealots never gain power, or I'll have to go somewhere less religious....like Iran!

Another "entertaining"
by Bavafa on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:15 AM PSTAnother "entertaining" church ritual is in Alabama and Tennessee, where they bring poisonous snake like rattle snakes and dance around them. They believe Jesus will protect them against these snakes. Apparently, not all of them are on the side of "god" as a good number of the worshippers have been beaten repeatedly be the angry snakes.

Praise the Lord!!!!!
As a side note: "Allah" knows COP and I have our differences but one thing we share in common is to be a "devout infidel"
As a second side note: I used "Allah" so not to offend Escape by using his/her "god"

I'm not attacking you for God's sake
by Escape on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:15 AM PSTI've been the one being attacked as well as God and the 'Red State' part of my country..
If you've been here so long by now you should have understood the constitution. Then you would understand there is no direct threat from Religion and there is meant to be no direct threat to it...
And the same to you,if you were also open minded to discuss the Catholic Religion,I would be game for discussion.I think it's a important discussion.Like for instance the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition and Perverted Priests.
Vildernose- I've also been called a 'sell-out' of my culture not only by people of my own culture but people of other cultures as well.I've been on both sides of the coin so to speak..
Here's another scary instance
by Cost-of-Progress on Thu Nov 18, 2010 09:11 AM PSTMr. Huckabee, who ran for president in 2008, during his campaign formally proposed nothing less than changing the Constitution to, quote, "make it fit God's standards" (!)
HUCKABEE PROPOSES TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION SO IT "FIT GOD'S STANDARDS"
Watch it:

Thank goodness, there are at least some folks in this country who can think for themselves...

by Rea on Thu Nov 18, 2010 08:59 AM PSTEscape, does Timothy Floyd ring the bell ?
Saw a documentary recently on French TV
by Rea on Thu Nov 18, 2010 08:53 AM PSTWas about the so-called "Hell houses", Texas (if I recall right). Young Christians, blood and repentance, burning in hell, and the rest.
Couldn't believe it. If they hadn't said it was America and it was happening now, one would've thought it was early 18th century.
The French crew said that particular Hell Church had allowed the ritual to be filmed so the "atheist France" could learn something out of it (sic!).

Maybe we are here to save you from yourself :)
by Bavafa on Thu Nov 18, 2010 08:35 AM PSTBut I like Vildemose response better.
I often think about this that many Americans are just or more hardcore religious fanatics as most Iranians in Iran. Only they are allowed openly to commit adultery, drink alcohol and cheat in business where as in Iran only the latter is allowed openly.

Escape, by your own account,
by Cost-of-Progress on Thu Nov 18, 2010 08:54 AM PSTyou're Asian. So, you're the one to talk. Your being A christian is a result of your limited ability to think for yourself, so don't blame me...
This blog has nothing to do with me and everything to do with organized religion's quest for power by whatever means. Just look at the history of Catholic Church throughout the ages.
The study is alarming as it points out that even though renaissance occured over 500 years ago, its affects have not yet penertared the US populous and the majority of her people.
This is not an endictment of religion, but its constant medling in politics and the means it uses to secure power and rule people's lives.
In response to your question: I am here by choice because as much as I think religion has a grip on the people and government here, it is a fraction of what's happening in my motherland. By the way, I've been here longer than you've been alive - (I'm willing to wager bet on that). I believe religion has blinded you like the rest of the "faithful". You could have started a meaningful debate instead of attacking me.
