It's clear that for most of us who rely on video clips from Iran, blogs and foreign TV reports believed that the majority was with the green voters: they're more outspoken, more visible (especially on the electronic media) and they represent the more liberal views that we also share. We rarely ever hear from the rural areas, we do not hear from the Iranians who are not online, who do not participate in blogs and TV interviews. One 10 mile trip from the south of Tehran to the northern part demonstrates the immense cultural gap in Iran's society. It shouldn't come as a surprise to see this silent majority win the election for their candidate, as disappointing as it is for most of us abroad. Could it be that the corruption and the "agha zadeh" thieveries frustrate the Iranian people the most? Could it be that slamming Rafsanjani's son sounded more pleasant to most Iranians than criticizing Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial? I don't know, I don't have the numbers and I sure don't know all the facts.
Of course the millions of green voters represent a huge crowd who can fill the streets and assemble in impressive numbers. This level of uprising was not seen for decades in Iran.
These struggles that you see on the streets today are between the voters and the ruling government.
That's why the boycotters are irrelevant. If people had agreed with them and boycotted the election by staying home, they would have had no leg to stand on today. The anti Ahmadinejad voters are demanding to be counted, and due to their high numbers they represent a powerful force. Where does that leave the ones who didn't vote? out in the cold! The ironic part is that this group is now boasting, ridiculing the voters and encouraging the demonstrations which is yet another cowardice stance from the ones who sit at home and cry lengesh kon.
I am also disappointed by the results and I have seen reports that try to scientifically prove fraud: //tehranbureau.com/2009/06/13/faulty-election... also many political figures, and groups inside Iran, even "rohanioon mobarez" have rejected the results of the election.
Nevertheless, the election was a victory for Iranian people because it's process opened discussions and put forth a brand new wave in Iran's political scene. I have no doubt the results were tweaked in favor of the hardliners, but at the most, I would believe a closer set of numbers that would have led to another round.
These are exciting times in our country. People are energized, open and more active in the scene. Iranian century long struggle for democracy and freedom is taking its course and moving forward, bending and defeating the obstacles and social barriers put forth by the ruling regimes. The generation of Iranians who are demonstrating today were mostly born in the last three decades, proving that even with strict Islamic laws and Islamic education, Iran's fight for freedom cannot be stopped. Nothing will be the same going forward, they might silence this crowd temporarily, but they cannot stop them. I just wish someone qualified was leading these struggles to help the Iranians who cry for freedom and oppose the corruption as well as human rights violations. Unfortunately we have an opposition that keeps missing the boat.
At this point, the question is how these next four years would be different from the last four. Will the ruling hardliners soften up with the knowledge of the growing moderates and fear of being removed from power? will they come down hard on people and take up an even more radical foreign policy?
No matter what, the change is here.

Dear IRANDokht,
by Jaleho on Sun Jun 14, 2009 07:34 AM PDTSorry, I just couldn't open that other link. I fisrt opened your other statistics link which thankfuylly had the numbers to show how silly those fraud claims were, both for Iran election and the US election. It took me a while to analyze the data in many different format, in particular the US data for comparison could be plotted in many different similar waves, and I wanted to make sure that I'll get that perfect line of FRAUD any possible way I plot it, to prove how absurd those claims were :-)
Then just for fun, I wanted to show that if an "ECONOMIST" used that kind of "statistics," he could make $billions in the stock market by being able to predict the next day value of DOW and Nazdaq, so you see I had to load bunch of stock market data....:-) :-)
In short, by the time I came back to your other link, it said it is broken. Maybe it got old and there's a new link you can provide?
Thanks.

by IRANdokht on Sun Jun 14, 2009 03:24 AM PDTThanks for the link azadi55. I certainly believe that Karrubi should have had a lot more votes than what was announced, his results were completely unbelievable.
Mr Prez aziz, I agree that there is no going back and as you said the genie is out of the bottle.
To come here with jokes (ahmadibuddy) or insults (The Prince aziz please calm down!) or general posts from other blogs only means that my point was lost on you. Either you read the blog and the comments or you didn't. Not my problem, but commenting on the title or a couple of chosen words from the blog that you probably scanned quickly renders your comment irrelevant.
Rosie you apparently just scanned the post to find a reason to attack again. I am getting used to your personal put downs. Nothing new, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and try to explain the point you seem to have missed.
People of Iran were being led by the boycotters to commit the same mistake as 4 years ago and the results would have been not only a victory for hardliners but no indication to the world as how Iranians really feel about their current government. Nobody really expected a complete honest and precise vote count, we can't even expect such things from well established democracies in the world...Now those who were pushing for a boycott (not meant the ones whore fused to vote without trying to recruit to the camp) have no right to continue their preachings.
Witnessing the hopeful Iranian youth participating in the campaigns, following the debates, going to the booths and casting their votes was a great experience for any Iranian. Then they realized that the supreme leader of their country is biased and capable of dismissing their votes (without any explanation or even regards for the huge number of their votes called anyone who causes trouble an enemy) which could not have been accomplished no matter how many expatriates and the old opposition parties in diaspora had insisted on it. If Khamenei had approached these voters with less rigidity and shown respect instead of accusing them to cause unrest, the demonstrations would not have escalated to riots and uprising.
Now please don't tell me that my heart doesn't break for all those who are risking their lives these days trying to voice their disenchantment, or that someone with no ties to this people has more concerns for their well being than I do. This is a process and has become a grass root movement in the country. The people involved are well aware of the risks and they are in the leading role. Either support them or get out of their way.
If anyone who's looking at this process from the outside with limited
knowledge of Iranian psyche and Iran's history wants to reduce it to a
child play in the schoolyard then so be it. It won't change the reality
and it's not worth commenting on.

Dear desideratum and KB
Thank you for "getting" the point of the blog :o)
KW: Please don't underestimate the Iranian youth's world views and political maturity or you'd sound out of touch with Iran.
Dear KB, Niloufar and Shazdeh and all
Yes this could very well be the beginning of their end. I was giving the election the benefit of the doubt by accepting that there has been tweaking involved and repeated again that because of those reasons I mentioned, I'd even believe a great support for AN but not a landslide.
My point was that this end of IRI's oppression is coming closer with every step the Iranians are taking and the regime cannot deny the huge crowd that voted green and is demonstrating and getting beaten up even at these late hours.
This movement would not have taken place if these Iranians had boycotted the election, they couldn't have made a point by silence alone. The point I was making is that the election opened up the discussions and created a movement which seems to be escalating since I wrote this.

Irandokht jan Shazdeh has a point..
by KB on Sat Jun 13, 2009 03:32 PM PDTAlthough I agree with most of your analysis the numbers and the stats do not add up, hence the protests.
The best thing about this "election" as you correctly point out is that there is no going back. The "Pandora’s box" has been opened . The people of Iran have witnessed unprecedented campaigning/mud slinging, the youth found a voice and the establishment has v clumsily divided itself.
Its now coming up to 3:25 pm Pacific time ( 3 am in Tehran) and I hear ( I do not want to be rumor mongering, some one from Iran told me on the phone) Rafsanjani and Mousavi are under house arrest and there is rioting in all major cities in Iran.
This could be the begining of the change..
Interesting Analysis
by just looking (not verified) on Sat Jun 13, 2009 03:19 PM PDTit is sad to see that some of the doostan outside of Iran "can`t see the forest for the trees".
I just hope that GitDun is in his very late 40's.
4 more years? doubt it!
by Niloufar Parsi on Sat Jun 13, 2009 03:08 PM PDTThis regime is heading for disaster.
How can every single opposition candidate lose in his own home town and with such a big margin? it is impossible.
the reformist movement was even more mobilised than the Khatami era - with more justification too given Ahmadinejad's failures - yet, how can their vote share be halved? it is impossible.
how can Karroubi possibly only get around 1% of the vote?
how can the 'rural vote' have such a major impact when the majority of the Iranian population is urbanised?
how come the opposition's share of the vote never shifted as more and more urban vote counts were announced? it is impossible for there to be no significant fluctutation in vote shares as the numbers are announced. Are we to believe the iranians uniformly and equally love ahmadinejad? who are we kidding?
how come iran's population is so predominantly young, yet a huge share of the vote went to a despised and conservative figure like AN or (rather) khamenei's faction?
let's face it: Khamenei and Ahmadinejad are traitors, and it is time for this regime to go. otherwise iran is heading for a military dictatorship as there is no legitimacy to this government whatsoever.
