Dear friends,

Thank you for your patience, sense of humor, understanding, tolerance, maturity and fairness. You heard me. I believe you deserve all those attributes, in different quantities.

Compared to when we first started, the tone of the comments has improved a lot. I think we're beginning to understand that telling our critics to shut up and hurling abuse at them will not make them shut up and they'll curse right back at you. So I see big improvement in discussions even though we still have a few years to go :)

In the past six months I did block two dozen people or more. Probably more if you include commercial spammers. Most others were blocked for a few days, few weeks and unblocked. It's the least pleasant part of my work. I hate interfering and playing the role of school master. Every time I block someone or delete an offensive comment I do think about the site's motto "nothing is sacred" and I wonder. Was I right? Was I wrong? I never feel completely justified in whatever action I decide take, and it wears you down.

If I judged your comments to harshly and deleted too many of them, I hope you don't take it to heart. If you got booted out of the site for too long, bebakhsheed. You're always welcome here.

My outlook on Iran is positive. The road ahead is long and treacherous, but democracy as an idea has taken root and growing fast. It's an idea whose time has come. Political Islam on the other hand has lost its intellectual vigor and ideological dynamism. It's become the protector of a dictatorship of a few in the name of god. The Green Movement is the future.

***

It's the Year of the Tiger, my Chinese sign. Soon I'm going to London for a few months with the option to travel all over Europe. So many places I want to see... Italy (especially Verona), Greece (never visited, dying to go), Prague (old wish), Amsterdam (makes me smile)...

A must-see

Regardless of the debate between the two; since The Big Lebowski,as mentioned in one remark, is one of my all-time favorite movies, I can only advise everyone to watch it.

Nowadays, there are annual Lebowski Fests in some American cities as well.

JJ has allowed a fascist kiaani like you to get away with profanity many times (you consistently have used the word "pimp"). Let's see if he follows through with his stated policy (blocking those who use profanity and personal attacks).

No wonder dumb homer drinks himself into depression rather than listening to hourly clueless pigeon droppings. How ever on the right note;

JJ , finally your season of self re-discovery has come. Leave the city of your comfort & walk into the realm of your intuition.  you can either use it or lose it. I say use it & say goodbye to inhibitions, bounds & distractions and let the real big Lebofski shows itself. swim a lotta rivers, walk a lotta lands, clean a lotta fat, meet a lotta women, read a lotta not your typical books, eat a lotta food & enjoy a lotta accents and come out of it with your real jj since identity & true self brings out purpose in life.

As James Turner said it the best;

All men should strive
to learn before they die
what they are running from, and to, and why.

Hope my time comes to try it for a thousanth time again ;:))

Cheers pal & best of luck!!!

JJ, I wanted to leave you a comment here, but then I realized that I may very well not be among the "Dear friends". Am I among the "Dear friends"? ......... Don't feel bad to answer NO to my question, I rather be your Dear enemy (kind of like doshmane daanaa-- note that I said 'kind of' as I have no claim on daanaai).

No worries Marge

by Gavazn on

I just do not like censorship, and JJ is great about that. Where else can Iranians be free to say what they think without getting arrested? But one thing I do want to ask from you is to not get personal with people when you do not agree with them about something. Cos that just stops the discussion from getting anywhere.

Have a great Norouz. x

I did not say Fred has NO RIGHT to say what he wants. He does. I disagree with JJ's idea that tone has changed when he is featured for calling people lapdogs and Islamists and IRI supporters for challenging him. I am glad people like Fred are advocating war and sanctions. We need them to come out of the wood work. I don't agree that people who challenge Fred are Islamists and rapists and supports of IRI.

Now for Nur-i-Azal. Let me be clear about why I support Nur. I hate religion. I hate religious institutions and I agree that Bahai, like the others, is a corrupt religion lead by a corrupt bunch of people who would otherwise be unemployed but decide to use quackery to exploit vulnerable people. It's been the same story for a couple thousand years.

Let me be even more specific, as much as I hate all the religions, (Islam especially), I do not advocate tagging and killing any one based on their religious preference. I was not here for a time, and someone wrote back 2 weeks ago stating that I support the death of Bahais because Nur wrote something alluding to this. I did no such thing. If Nur wrote that, then shame on him. Captain also mentioned this about me. He also said that Nur shouldn't have be so cruel to bahais or something. I did not see cruelty in his blogs, but again, I wasn't here for a while. I'm not sure when his "tag and kill" blog happened, but I didn't support that one. I don't support what IRI is doing to Bahais by denying them rights.

If you are Bahai, good for you. I also believed in ghosts once. Thank you for telling me what it was about me that brought this up. I didn't change the topic or avoid it. I didn't even know what it was until you mentioned Nur. Now it makes sense. I appreciate it Gavazn.

Let me put it to you simply

by Gavazn on

Let me put it to you simply. If you approve and defend blogs by the likes of Nur-i-Azal about Bahais (I take it you have seen ALL his material past) and call that  free speech, which JJ does, Fred has equal rights to put his thoughts across, whether you like it or not. Now quit making a fool of yourself by changing the subject and starting to get insulting.

Yolanda: Thanks for your good wishes. I'm 48. Brave are those who are in Iran fighting for freedom.

Monda: Thanks for the tips. I will check them out. I may have visited Verona during family tour of Europe in 1974. But too long ago to remember.

maziar 58: I'm 12 going on 48 :) Eyde Shoma Ham Mobaarak!

Hovakhshatare: Thanks for the kind words and honest observations. The only thing I would disagree with is your statement: "People defending or explaining conduct/news/activity that is subhuman and anti-decent by almost any human, civilized and international (not western) standard, is anti democratic and anti free exchange of ideas." Democracy includes everyone's participation no matter how "sub-human" their ideas may be.

MaziarB: I'm sure you are right. There are some people who leave comments under different IDs. But I don't think it's common or a problem. Also remember that you can never be 100% sure that the same person has multiple names. If you guess too often and believe in what you think, you could make lots of mistakes and accept them as facts. My recommendation is not to take anyone or any comment too seriously.

MM: Thanks! I'm traveling but not quitting iranian.com.

Irandokht: Mamnoon! My Chinese year comes around only once every 12 years. I better make the best of it :)

DK: Glad you're back after a brief exile :)

I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek: When I say the "tone" has improved in the comments I meant there are fewer cases of profanity and personal attacks. Fred has his point of view, and so do you.

Mehrban: You are very kind. Enjoy and have a great new year.

I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek

Gavazn, please, stop being so thick.

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

People aren't judging. You are. Don't avoid my question, please. You said something serious and I'd like to know a specific example. Don't fall back on "people."

If you really think that by saying "how dare," i (my likes! LOL who else is there?!) meant to intimidate, you have misunderstood. I meant that Fred's blogs are so vile and his slurs against people who challenge him are so cowardly, that I refuse to be grouped with him.

I haven't hurt anyone? Have I hurt you? Why aren't you citing something specific instead of accusing me?! I responded to your blog and told you why women love Horror Movies. You obviously have a grudge and I suppose it's because I'm anti monarchy and maybe any sanctions. I can't be sure. I do read my comments. I edit them all the time.  So if you're going to accuse me, don't tell me to "go back and read," because I always do. If you accuse me of something like that, it's your duty to read and cite.

There was a professor here who was trying to intimidate me. You didn't seem to mind then. Maybe his "likes" are entitled? Is that cool? I finally gave him his satisfaction and said "I'm an IRI AGENT!!!! Here is my confession!" He was actually telling me that if I didn't write certain things, it was proof of my agent-ness. How stupid. Talk about intimidation and threats.

P.S. Where does it say people don't read Iranian.com but only the comments? How is that a truth? The comments are where people discuss and share just as they do in a blog. My comments are my views. My comments are never slurs and insults. I love to laugh and I try to share that with others. Your funny bone isn't in tact, I think.

People can judge for themselves

by Gavazn on

"How dare you compare me to Fred. I actually discuss topics. I don't hurl slurs. "

Remember not everyone that read Iranian. com comments, but they read all comments. Perhaps you should go read yours once in a while before becoming defensive and judging other individuals. We have to agree to differ on your defense. And yes I dare, and will not be intimidated by the likes of you. And hiding behind a cartoon character and using that as an excuse for hurting people does not cut it with me and others.

I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek

That's not true

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

You are entitled to your opinion, but I have not called anyone names. I have called Fred foolish. I have gone out of my way to not call people names. I call myself names and give myself the label of communist. Last week I told the people in the Maryam Roshani thread to shut up and enjoy and move on instead of fighting, and guess what? In 30 minutes I apologized to AsteroidX because I called her hemorrhoid. On women's day, that was just awful and she had a good point. We don't "Have" people. There's not stockroom. How dare you compare me to Fred. I actually discuss topics. I don't hurl slurs. I don't accuse people of being spies. I congratulate the Israelis for using the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" philosophy on a bunch of easily swayed exiled men.

I am a cartoon and I am silly; you may say this and you're right. However, Fred is not. The baloney he is stating regularly falls into people's Israel War Porn google alerts so I go to task in his blogs, something I may stop doing because he doesn't deserve the attention. Neither of us has the power to actually push the war button, but I will express myself to stop it because I'm American! I am sick of my adopted country wasting money and blood on cow excrement for Israel and the defense contractor industry.

Even Fred would not write such a response to someone who bothered to write three or four sentences to him. How dare you compare me to Fred. I'm much more sensible, even as a cartoon figure.

Happy Norooz Gavazn. Have a great year.

Thank you JJ for this site and for your own even keeled and fair disposition.   What you have built here is so above and beyond anything I could imagine in terms of a connection between Iranians and/or Iranian mindeds that I can not even come up with a real suggestion to improve.  I am sure my fellow bloggers will fill this gap happily ;-).   Happy new year and all the best to you.

We have Fred for the same reason we have you. I have read many remarks by you telling people to "shup up" and calling them very bad names. So you are noone to judge others behaviour.

I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek

JJ If you are so proud of the tone, why do you feature Fred?

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

Why do you encourage someone who regularly hurls slurs to people here by calling them lefty lapdogs and anti-semites? Do you read what he writes anymore? OR do you just feature him because a few of us are emotional enough about Iran to reply to him? Most of us are semites. Some of us are even Jewish. I don't understand why you do this as editor. I'm disappointed that you say the tone has improved. The tone has not improved. There are more users here calling for "tight" sanctions and war than ever. When you tell these people that this is wrong. That this will worsen chances of democracy in Iran, they call you an IRI supporter. The tone is exactly as it was.

Happy Norooz to you. Good luck with all your new plans! Thank you for this web site.

That was a great cover of Farhad's song. I heard the Iranian TV is now playing Farhad's version of it. Ironic, isn't it?

I looked up the forecast for the Tigers this year, it sounds like this is the year for you and my son who's also a tiger:)

here it goes:

Forecast for 2010

Being the Tiger’s own year, 2010 holds great promise for those born under this sign, with exciting developments happening for them both personally and professionally. Some Tigers may be feeling disappointed and disheartened after 2009 and it will be important to leave the past behind and concentrate on the future, which is looking so bright! Financially, everything improves this year for those born under this sign and money-making thoughts and ideas should be fully explored and investigated. With the fast pace of this year for all signs, the Tiger needs to take extra care in planning and thinking all projects through – no rushing headlong into schemes during 2010! Tigers looking for romance will possibly see a friendship suddenly develop into something more personal with exciting consequences. August, December and January will see a very active and entertaining social calendar, but all of 2010 will see fun activities for the Tiger. The Spring months, March to May, will bring encouraging and interesting job opportunities, but the Tiger will still have to make sure he puts himself forward and gets noticed at work.

You're doing a great job already and many know it already.

Good luck in Europe and I am sure you'll have lots of fun!

Happy Norooz and good luck in Europe...

by Q on

I for one rarely get bothered by the offensive filth. Often it's pure hillarity with a heavy dose of (unrealized) irony.

Case in point, Mr. Hovak saying:

Free expression is not endless babble back and forth ad nauseum or clever sounding sophistry. Giving a forum to IRR agents and supporters or anti or pro Israelites & Palestinians is not freedom of expression.

MaziarB

Happy Norooz JJ

by MaziarB on

Thank you for all your hard work. About improving the quality of comments, could you do something about people having conversations with themselves on your site? There are some people who talk to themselves with different ID's, in effect applauding themselves! This makes some of the discussions disingenious, because there aren't really two or three people supporting or opposing an idea, but one person who, unfortunately is playing games with other users instead of having a fair dialogue.

Hovakhshatare

Happy Norooz, Tiger, and Travels

by Hovakhshatare on

I have constructive criticisms but first things first: you are a good honorable man. Playful, searching, & likable. Don't blush yet, the harsh stuff will follow. I hope you find all you are looking for and then some as you are an asset to the Iranian community.

Based on your blogs of last few weeks, seems you are falling, have fallen or want to fall. In love that is. Also seems like you are thinking of what next, and how do I make some real money and stop slaving. You are likely in pain, perhaps from Sciatica & watching our country suffer & erode. Leverage the Medical MJ and being close to Amsterdam while you can. I hope happiness follows you wherever you go.

Now, this site, or any other does need a school master and your hesitance in filling that role showed and has diminished this site despite decrease in foul language. By virtue of its name and potential, this site has a long was to go as you said yourself but the pre-requisite is not Iranians learning more about democracy as you suggest. Even though we need that anyway. Even the greatest websites need editorial management & direction to elevate the content and be elevated by it. DK's valuable and quality post on Kasravi for example, can't get featured but look at what is. Today or any. There is always a push and pull between reflecting Iranian community without being its toy; unless that is what you want. It is hard work for sure.

Free expression is not endless babble back and forth ad nauseum or clever sounding sophistry. Giving a forum to IRR agents and supporters or anti or pro Israelites & Palestinians is not freedom of expression. It is allowing demagoguery. People defending or explaining conduct/news/activity that is subhuman and anti-decent by almost any human, civilized and international (not western) standard, is anti democratic and anti free exchange of ideas. It also detracts from a balanced discussion on almost any subject. It is both anti-democratic, demeaning and devaluing: to the conversation, and this site. I bet it shows in site traffic stats already. But all it takes to fix it is few weeks of adult supervision and IC not trying to be everything for everyone.

Regards

you will be car rides (or train) to many culturally rich cities such as Lucca, Bologna, Siena, etc. You may even find that Umbria and Liguria are just as fascinating as Tuscany.  Generally speaking many people have a tough time stopping at one region without exploring the neighboring others.  Unless there is time limitation of course, in which case you may find yourself in a bind :o)
