The truth is .....Iranian.com is tops!
by javaneh29
23-Jul-2008

Fed up with all the drama, bickering and talk about religion ( yawn yawn sigh) I decided to exercise my fingers and investigate other web sites. My mornings mission..... still in my pj's, coffee pot and ciggies to hand I set off in anticipation of what I might find.

I looked at 'parsloop' (advertised on this site) and registered. A new
site still in its infancy and probably not even cutting its teeth yet,
with almost no activity or parcipitation by its members and most of the
issues are generated by the moderators. Visually it looked promising but
failed to keep me stimulated past the home page. It needs some of your expert help guys and gals,

I took a tour of the web looking at other sites for Iranians and found
few. Those I did find were less of the same. In fact most were so
miserably lacking in any recent content and were so low in appeal that I began to reflect upon my earlier negative thoughts about here.

So I want to show some appreciation for our devoted editor JJ and all the work he and the moderators and others behind the scenes do for Iranian.com. I'm ashamed to admitt that I didnt really appreciate their efforts before. I wasnt around at the birth of this site and I havent been here to watch it grow into what it has become today but it is a credit to you all. I want to say a huge thanks for the energy you have put in. Iranian.com tops all the others by far, its presntation, user friendliness and openess to name but a few of the qualities that make this site the best.

I also want to thank everyone who contributes here. So many different characters and personalities ( some more endearing than others but all valued), adding a rich diversity of views and opinion. And thank god for the bickering, which from now on I will think of as lively debate ....even that is more tolerable and sometimes entertaining.

So I say lets take stock , appreciate what we have and perhaps we can stop moaning and complaining about this, that and everything else.

god bless you all

A reader ,very nice !

by Tahirih on

I was glancing over comments and saw your generalization about people from different ghettos !

How really nice of you , just because ,unlike you ,we are registered and you know about our religion and stance, you lump us all together!!!

How insensitive of you to say " Bahaiis were there ", so we are not individuals to you we are those Bahaiis?!

Some readers asked us to engage in other topics than religion and this is what happens!!! again I am the white elephant in the room?!

my mom says that so and so's son was a drug addict and his parents wanted him to quit. He use to refuse and say what is the use they will always say , oh , that boy who use to be a drug addict! Now this is our story we make a comment about something different and you say < oh bahaiis were there.

please stop this, or get used to it , since I will be in different blogs as I wish. And if you have the courage get registered and let us know your stance too. Also please do not disscuss my religion in this blog.

Come on Irandokht!

by Religious (not verified) on

You took a baby step, now see the rest! JJ is of course the mayor. If in wild wild west, there were no mayors or sheriffs or laws what do you think would have happened?!

Would the gun slingers check their guns at the door and walk in the saloon all polite and gentlemen?! Why do we even need laws then?!

Of course it is the publisher responsibility of ANY website to have rules. Can you show me IC's rule? Are they posted anywhere here? The few that JJ has posted says he does it HIS way. Javidocracy. Ok if you're ok with it.

It's not just religious articles. Bickering and slander is the norm now. Are you denying it? Just look at the home page's articles and comments and some of the most commented articles and blogs. Is there any shortage of verbal abuse?

Other websites and blogs have rules and don't allow people willy nilly attacking one another. The other commentator below said it right, open your eyes. There were many good writers. Where are they? I'm talking about the ones who used to write all the time and really good ones.

If the publisher doesn't protect these writers against verbal abuse, what incentive is there for them to continue? Many are old respected individuals as talking history. They are published and paid professionally. Why should they endure abuse?

There are Iranian's of the day left and right, including animals! Of all these Iranians of the days, many who are published people or well known, how many write here? How many famous Iranians share their views and experiences here? Why aren't they here? I tell you why. Because they will not be respected here. No way no how. See it for what it is.

Religious

by IRANdokht on

It's obvious that we're looking at this issue from two completely different views.

I don't think the lack of decency in interaction between the members here is JJ's fault. I don't think he should be held responsible for teaching people manners and proper behavior.

You seem to believe that this is like a town and JJ is the mayor or the chief of police.

We're all adults here (as far as I can tell) and we have our lives in the real world where we do not jump and grab at people's throat when we disagree with them during a discussion.

Now why is it that people feel that they should check their manners at their browser's homepage and enter this site with absolutely no reservations about acting childish or arrogant or down right rude, is beyond me.

I think JJ's policy of not acting as the site's dictator is teaching us a valuable lesson about ourselves, only if we care to learn.

All that said, when other members complain about someone's behavior or if what is written here can cause legal problems for JJ or his
site, it's absolutely his right to draw the line, but policing the members and visitors is certainly not his responsibility.

that JJ loses his good writers and contributors because he is very disrespectful toward them. He has NO communication skills and sometimes behaves like a real jerk. Too bad!

This was a very sweet gesture of appreciation to JJ and I.C.  I couldn't agree with you more.  I LOVE the picture... I seriously doubt it slows down pages anymore than the numerous video clips...:-)

I don't think there's any "bias" against religion in making a comment that there is excessive bickering about it... who could deny that!  Sometimes you just want to relax on I.C. and enjoy the scenery...it doesn't always have to be soooo serious.

I wish someone WOULD start a food section... I need help with my lubia polow!!!

RE JJ AND LAW AND ORDER ON THIS SITE

by Rosie T. on

Religious asks who else can bring law and order here  but JJ?

Ironically as critical as I am of this blog THE PEOPLE WHO CAN BRING LAW AND ORDER ARE THE MEMBERS BY DOING EXACTLY WHAT JAVANEH DOES HERE. I PRAISED her overall intention.

People need to BLOG on the website workings, positive AND negative. People need to be willing to RESEARCH when necessary as Javaneh did here and I have done with our google ratings to remind people the world is watching us and how we treat each other here. If such blogs do not come up REGULARLY about moderation system etc. praises and specific grievances,  then you have a javidocracy, not democracy and sometimestoo lax, other times too inflexible. Very hard for jj to keepa middle ground because of his history--from Khomeinist, which makes him so allergic to repression-- to extreme civil libertarian, now faced with the challenge of this new blogging technology!!!.

HE NEEDS REGULAR INPUT FROM THE COMMUNITY AND THE TOOL IS BLOGGING. He wrote his Respect guidelines for civil discourse last month in response to a BLOG by Jimzibund that Jimzi and I "ran" together. JJ kept up the blog for FOUR DAYS and read it and then he wrote his guidelines and publicly thanked us.

The tool if you choose collective democracy here and balance on the see-saw  is blogging. I am so positive of this I'd wager my life on it.

To Reader, Religious,

by Rosie T. on

I'm sorry Reader, I thought you were saying I bicker like Q and Zion. I don't. I try to mediate. Very difficult and draining for me.  Try so hard.  Much more success with Iranian political topics like Islam-bashing and warring political parties than with Palestine.  (I don't consider myself a teacher here btw, I learn from everyone). Thanks for clarifying without getting mad at me.  Basically I agree with your clarification.

Religious: the problem here is not with saying the religious discussions are yawn yawn sigh. It is with SINGLING THEM OUT. So many political discussions are exactly the same in tedium and bickering. So if Javaneh singles out religious articles as yawnyawn sigh I can only assume she is biased against them and that IMHO is TERRIBLE to voice here

No one forces her to read them. No one at all. This website has everything from COOKING to TRAVELOGUES to FICTION to blogs and photo essays on PEOPLE's PETS.  Thousands upon thousands of EVERYTHING in it.  Everything....and more.

Wild wild west

by Religious (not verified) on

Irandokht this is like wild wild west. Wasn't there a need, a HELP, for law and order?

Who else other than JJ in this website can bring law and order? You? Me? Javaneh? He says he makes up his own rules! Being the bowl hotter than soup are we?!

If you think there is law and order in this website and there are no personal attacks and no bashing of religions and everything is honky dory and we are all tolerant and JJ's law and order is working just fine, then ok things are good. Forget about it.

You brought up our problem as a "nation" not me. I think my nation Iran is doing fine. I'm ok with it. I'm always ok with it. Some people though always think we Iranians this, we Iranians that, the problems with Iranians is this and that.

IRANdokht

Religious?!?!?

by IRANdokht on

You said:

JJ doesn't want us to be tolerant, or HELP us become tolerant. If he did he would have established rules which he doesn't.

that's exactly what's wrong with us as a nation! We NEED someone to hit us over the head so we learn how to act what to think and what to say!

That is exactly what's wrong! JJ needs to take out his cyber 10-commandments and force us to follow his rules! because we're Iranians and we can't be trusted to know how to think and what not to do!

It's all JJ's fault for providing a forum for everyone to speak up! How dare he think we're civilized individuals?

Instead of appreciating the hard work that is going into this and taking advantage of the opportunity provided to us, lets bash JJ for being too open-minded.

give me a break!

Rosie Jan, take it easy!

by A Reader (not verified) on

Ey Baba! I wasn't laughing at you! I like you. You have made invaluable contributions to this site. You are "one of us" boring and bickering folks of the site! This blogger can learn a lot about tolerance from reading your previous posts. And I also don't want you to leave. I have read most of the things you have written, but not all, to answer your question.

I was laughing at the circumstances of this post! Here this lady has posted a corny, romantic photograph and has written a corny, romantic post, being coy and cute. She then gets some of the standard "ooh, thank you, you are great" comments and then enter the real world of Iranian.com! I just found that very funny and in a way very appropriate of a person who makes her entrace by insulting and disrespecting others on the site, that's all.

Now please let me go back to laughing like a hyenna at my desk. Even if you don't get the humor of it, I dig it and I want to laugh!

Rosie yes this is funny

by Religious (not verified) on

Funny because we can not be tolerant on our own. Tolerance has left the building! We are not tolerant on this website. Are we? Is this a surprise to you? We don't say most of the things we write here in person. We are more tolerant in person but not here in this website and behind our keyboards. JJ doesn't want us to be tolerant, or HELP us become tolerant. If he did he would have established rules which he doesn't. So this goes on and on and sigh sigh yawn yawn.

Rosie T.

reader, i don't see ANYTHING funny about all this...

by Rosie T. on

what do you read of mine, reader? what's so funny" i've written so many blogs of mine this past week  begging BEGGING zion and q and the rest on the Palestinian issue to make PEACE.  giving SPECIFIC steps they could take. BEGGING..and then you imply i'm just like them.  .what's so funny about my work here? read my recents blogs On War, This Website and Concession and ON THIS VEHICLE FOR PEACE . people have thanked me for helping them end their muslim-bashing, their anti-semitism, their hatred of each other for the politcal parties they belong too. tibecause i've reasoned with them ceaselessly, tirelessly EVERYWHERE on this website I could.  what do you read of mine reader? what the h-ll's so funny? you haven't read ME. you've read the noise in your head.

this website has never been a JOKE to me. my comments below taking issue with this yawn sigh sigh thing are justified and necessary. i started with what's GOOD about this blog. AND I"VE EXTOLLED THIS WEBSITE OVER AND OVER AGAIN this past year, but you haven't EVER read ME. you've just been reading the noise in your head.

(PS i'm leaving here wednesday. did you read that reader  no, because you don't read me. i can't even be called a "regular"here as you just did. read me).

Yawn yawn sigh sigh on religion is right

by Religious (not verified) on

If the discussions were about pros and cons of religion it would be nice and exciting. Unfortunately, the discussion in this website circles around attacking religions under "nothing is sacred" and the most popular religion in Iran which is Islam is constantly attacked.

So yes the religion discussion in this website is plenty and old AND yawn yawn sigh sigh.

What part of this yawn yawn sigh sigh is wrong or yuo don't understand? Do you see good discussions about religion here? If yes, show me ONE article. Not any article about discussion of religion, that we know is plenty, one that is a good discussion without personal attacks.

Ghash kardam az khandeh! Welcome to Iranian.com, Lady!

Let's see...the regulars with nice comments for everybody already showed up, Rosie showed up, and the Bahaii's showed up, also. All that is left is for Zion and Fred and Q to come and sham-o-gol-o parvaneh will all be here on your poetic blog!

You thought you were posting something shallow and touchy-feely to flirt a little bit! Salam-on-Alaik! This is Iranian.com for you. Take the whole thing or leave the whole thing. Never criticize others for their beliefs or styles to endear yourself to some! Reading this post and its comments has been the funniest thing that happened to me all week! If only Zion and others come, too, it would be the funnest thing that happened all month! (yes, that's sad, I know). Welcome to Iranian.com!

Dear Javaneh

by faryarm on

Much of the "yawn" with Religion, and i think you mean the discussion of Bahais , has to do with responses to  comments with uninformed opinion.

Once Bahais can stop defending against baseless lies and establish the fact that their passion and belief is simply much much more than what people perceive "religion to be; that it has to do with a personal quest for peace pf mind, tranquility, love and a universal and a  practical approach to unite all peoples.

Once we all get over the Fallacies, we can perhaps begin to see that the "yawn yawn"  discussions contain possibly the only Iranian born solution to our desperate situation as a divided country  and confused culture ,ruled by vicious self interested Mullahs.

Jahanshah's recent blog in Normal people shows that he knows full well, the potential for substance to be gained ,again once people can see past the baseless lies thrown at Bahais..

it is not surprising that Iranian.com is at the top of its league; it continues to be a forum for discussing real solution to our every day questions, instead of the same old same old fluff in other sites..

The "yawn yawn.." discussions  I just reaised happen to be the most viewed and the most discussed on the site..

The "yawn Yawn" discussions is the subject of Obama's speech  to the world ,in Berlin  as I write this.

Obama's theme; "Global Citizenship" and "Common humanity" .The words Of Baha'u'llah in the Nineteenth century.

I've noticed that you are new to this site. I have been visiting this site, on and off, for the past 4-5 years.

If there is one thing that you need to know is that there used to be many more contributors and writers who produced a better quality of work than we have now. I mean fiction, non-fiction, prose and poetry.

Jahanshah seems to be a decent chap, but for some reason he seems unable to keep around his good writers and contributors.

Fish says missing the point entirely, I agree though not

by Rosie T. on

entirely. Agree with intention of this blog. Have always tried to do the same. Agree website is the best Ianian one in English, Agreethat it is very important to blog nput on the website (positive and negative) to ensure collective voice in running the website.   Agree public thanks must be given to team. Have alwas tried to blog these things and thread them and urge others to do the same.. .So I agree entirely with your intention in posting this blog.. But I don't agree with opening of yawn yawn sigh. Misses the point entirely.

Talk about religion, why yawn yawn sigh? It's important to many people and it is a necessary part of free speech especially on a website about Iranian topics if peace is to be achieved. If it yawn yawn sighs you, why did you read so much of it as to get frustrated? So many other things to read.

Bickering, yawn yawn sigh. I agree bickering can be harmful. But if it yawn yawn sighs you so, why did your last blog on Fantasy posit four  hypothetical scenarios where Iranian women could basically get back at men if they had the legal power to do so, without distinguishing between different types of Iranian men or positing one single conciliatory senario? And end with "What goes around comes around"?  Did you do this to avoid bickering? Or for that matter drama? Which segways into:

Drama yawn yawn sigh. That was the word you used in a post to a blogger who was speaking  of an extreme painful situation  that made her have to leave (without names  or details, discretely . That blogger was me. Why did you post as a goldfish calling yourself  "can't be bothereed to log in" (yawn yawn sigh) Why did you not give the two words I asked for: I'm sorry.  Was this to abate or to fuel the drama and bickering you now yawn yawn sigh about?

So I agree with fish half and half.  Does this blog miss the point entirely? Intention of the blog makes an important point. Yawn yawn sigh misses the point entirely.

Khanom Jan:

To your own admission, you only just got here and you are already "fed up with all the drama, bickering and talk about religion"?!! Learn from the very man you are tripping all over yourself to compliment! Have some tolerance. This is a forum where Iranians come to write and talk about what interests and pains and puzzles and moves them. While you are free to post your five blogs a day, remember that even if you don't like to read what others are saying, you should remain humble and respectful of others' opinions and their efforts to make sense of the senseless. That's what makes Iranian.com such a special place.

Like you, I went on a search for a comparable Iranian sites and am confirmed that iranian.com is the best for me. (imagine that level of motivation, for me anyway..if you knew me, you'd know it's a Big risky move...like perhaps many others, or perhaps not)

I ditto your comments about JJ. He sure has done and does a mighty fine job here on this baby.  And he has my GRATITUDE for providing me with my morning caffein boost, my mid day entertainment breaks and my night time sleeping aid!
