I agree with you.  The movement is genuine and it does not have leadership outside Iran and doesn't need it, either. People inside Iran are the only ones who can determine its pace and its direction. The best thing people outside Iran can do is to get the protesters' voices heard.  Nothing more. A peaceful movement doesn't need money, and doesn't need imported leaders. Everybody should just stand back and let them take care of themselves.  Noboy knows when one too many statements can turn beloved national artists and analysts into caricatures.  If they look up Hakha, though, he might tell them of his own experiences.  Everyone should stand clear.

I agree Mehraban. I think it's too late to reform this government. Sazagara and Makhmalbaf should be asking for general strikes and if they have to go to Iran. This movement needs a braveheart inside Iran...

"" It has always struck me how Iranians are highly articulate and intelligent, but their ability to put this into meaningful collective action is stunted by fear, suspicion and censorship. Having had some involvement with Iranian human rights and opposition groups, I’ve observed how quickly this weakness leads to mutual recriminations between people who have far fewer differences between each other than they have with the regime they are supposed to be fighting. In the end, this breeds factionalism and inevitable accusations that one or the other is in the pockets of VEVAK/Mossad/CIA/MI5/Shah/Satan, something that the regime exploits to the fullest.

It has made me rather pessimistic about the chances of street protests emerging into something more coherent that can both topple a very well-armed and fanatical regime and develop a credible alternative. The danger is that this will all fizzle out like the 1999 student protests, crushed under the weight of brutish state violence.

Desires for nebulous concepts of justice and freedom are not enough; every revolution needs a vanguard and Mousavi others are falling well short of providing leadership in the same way as Khomeini did when he took the opportunity to take control of what was a broad-based movement.

I feel the best anyone can hope for is a ‘reformist’ (my personal preference is Karroubi) government that can tip the balance of the political system away from the Supreme Leader and towards the Majlis and prise open a role for civil society. But even this will require a massive effort. At times the regime looks like a house of cards that can quickly topple due to its inherent contradictions, but it has persisted and endured major challenges.

 Maybe the threat of revolution can prompt gradualist moves towards democracy. Tensions will continue, but the regime may be forced into making a few concessions to allay the concerns of its more powerful critics – at the expense of those brave young people who spilled their blood under the green banner.

Sazegara, Makhmalbaaf or anyone else

must say what the demands are.  Just to call people out and get them killed is not the way to go, the goals must start to be spelled out.

This is the "warning" which was issued to Etemad Newspaper for publishing news about what happened on Ashura.  The paper, one of the last remaining reformist newspapers in Iran, may be closed down shortly.

جنبش راه سبز (جرس): معاونت مطبوعاتی وزارت ارشاد محمود احمدی نژاد در اطلاعیه‌ای عنوان کرد: روزنامه اعتماد در شماره روز دوشنبه، مرتکب چندین تخلف شده است.
اطلاعیه روابط عمومی این معاونت بدین شرح است:
روزنامه اعتماد شماره 2136 مورخ دوشنبه 7 دیماه 1388 در صفحات اول و دوم خود طی درج گزارشی با عنوان "خبرهای رسمی درباره درگیریهای روز عاشورا در تهران – سخنان فرماندهان نیروی انتظامی درباره حوادث تاسوعا و عاشورا" مرتکب تخلفات ذیل شده است:
1 – تقطیع سخنان فرماندهان مختلف نیروی انتظامی و گزینش و چینش مطالبی که اولاً در ساعات مختلف و ثانیاً در موارد مختلف اظهار شده بود به منظور القاء "تناقض" در مواضع و اظهارات رسمی فرماندهان نیروی انتظامی اقدامی غیراخلاقی، مغرضانه و خلاف رسالت مطبوعاتی به شمار می‏رود.
2 – استفاده از تعابیری مانند "لباس شخصی‏ها" برای عزاداران عاشورا و مردمی که پاسدار حریم حرمت مراسم سوگواری حضرت اباعبدالله الحسین علیه‏السلام بوده و مانع سوءاستفاده فرصت طلبان شده‏اند شگردی زشت، تقلیدی و مشابه شگردهای رسانه‏های معاند به نظر می‏رسد.
3 – انتشار شایعات مبنی بر درگیری در شهرهای نجف‏آباد، اصفهان، قم، شیراز و تبریز علاوه بر تهران، حاکی از نقض آشکار مفاد ماده 6 قانون مطبوعات است.
4 – حمایت ضمنی از آشوبگران و سران فتنه که امنیت، حیثیت و منافع کشور را هدف قرار داده‏اند از مواردی است که روزنامه اعتماد بر ارتکاب آن اصرار می‏ورزد.
در ادامه این اطلاعیه ادعا شده است: بالاخره معلوم نیست که عدم پوشش خبری مراسم هایی که دهها میلیون ایرانی در آن حضوری حماسی داشته‏اند مانند: مراسم تاسوعا و عاشورا در سراسر کشور و تحت الشعاع قرار دادن چنین حرکت عظیم ملی به بهانه برهم خوردن یک سخنرانی تشنج‏آفرین بر اساس کدام رسالت مطبوعاتی پیگیری می‏شود؟

1- شما در عاشورای امسال جهان را متقاعد کردید که جنبش سبز ماندنی است و حکومت استبداد رفتنی است.
مطبوعات ورسانه های دنیا و بیانیه دولت های جهانی سراسر ستایشگر شجاعت و استقامت شما شده اند و از رفتنی بودن استبداد خامنه ای سخن می گویند. روس ها اعلام می کنند که ما پشت حکومت ایران نبوده ایم تا آبروی خود را برای آینده حفظ کنند. چینی ها اعلام می کنند که ساعت دموکراسی در ایران سریعتر از ساعت ساخت بمب اتم حرکت می کند. آمریکائیهایی که می گفتند مسائله ما بمب اتم است و امور داخلی ایران به ما مربوط نیست، با صدای بلند اعلام می کنند بدون رعایت منافع دموکراتیک ایرانیان هر معامله ای با حکومت فعلی بی فایده است و تمام اروپا یکپارچه سرکوب عاشورا را محکوم و حکومت را به عقب نشینی در مقابل خواست شما دعوت می کنند.
درود بر شما مردمی که سیاست خارجی ملی تان را در کف خیابان های سرخ از خون تان با حرکت آرام سبزتان تعیین کردید.
2- خامنه ای که در روز عاشورا حداقل 38 نفر را شهید کرده است، خود دستور ربودن پیکر شهدا را صادر کرده است تا تعداد شهدا معلوم نشود و مردم ایران امکان تشییع با شکوه 38 شهید را نداشته باشند.
خامنه ای آخرین نیروی خود را بسیج کرده است تا امروز 4شنبه با اتوبوس از شهرها و روستاهای دوردست با پرداخت پول برای تهران سیاهی لشگر جمع کنند و با قرآن بر سر نیزه کردن و فریب مردم، یزید بودن خود را پنهان کند. غافل از آن که این بار در نقش معاویه ظاهر می شود.
برای بی اثر کردن توطئه های کودتاچیان، تمامی رهبران جنبش از مردم می خواهند آرامش و خونسردی خود را حفظ کنند و روز چهارشنبه 9 دی ماه برای ادامه تظاهرات به خیابان ها نیایند تا یکبار دیگر معلوم شود خامنه ای و طرفداران آدم کش و متجاوز او چقدر اندکند.
3- چنانچه خامنه ای پیکر 38 شهید عاشورا را برای تشییع به ملت پس ندهد؛ مردم ایران پنج شنبه ساعت 3 بعد از ظهر در تمامی شهرها با حضور در خیابان ها مراسم تشییع سمبلیک شهدا را برگزار خواهند کرد، باشد که تسلی خاطر خانواده شهدا شود. (محل راه پیمایی ها همان مسیرهای عاشوراست. چنانچه با نیروهای سرکوبگر مواجه شویم با تغییر مسیر در نقاط مختلف شهر، حرکت آرام و بدون خشونت خود را ادامه می دهیم.)
4- دانشجویان دانشگاه ها مکررا درخواست کرده اند برای اعتراض به دستگیری های گسترده از روز شنبه 12 دی ماه به دانشگاه ها بروند اما به عنوان اعتراض سر کلاس های درس و جلسه امتحان حاضر نشوند و از مردم خواسته اند در صورت دستگیری موسوی و کروبی و خاتمی سراسر کشور به اعتصاب دانشجویان بپیوندند.
ضمن اطلاع رسانی و قدر دانی از حرکت هوشمندانه دانشجویان، از مردم ایران درخواست می شود تا برای مرحله اعتصابات گسترده علیه حکومت کودتا آماده شوند.

Shifteh jan: At this point I really don't know what to believe. I'm just reading the news as they come. It's hard to make any accurate prediction of the regime's next move. But If I were him and suddenly I had come to my senses and look at the realties on the ground, I would be leaving to.

I'm not sure if he is wise enough though.

Thanks for stopping by and for helping out.

Do you really think this is true?  I don't believe it for a minute.  I do not believe those guys are anywhere near thinking that their days are numbered, let alone thinking of running away.  They are scared, yes, but they don't feel like they are about to crumble.  

Remember, there are a few other steps before getting on the plane, such as apologizing to people and admitting "having heard their message," and offcering a coalition government/drinking the shokaran.  None of those things have happened. 

They haven't gotten it yet, so they aren't going anywhere, yet.

وزارت خارجه بريتانيا روز سه شنبه اعلام کرد که سفير اين کشور در تهران در پی احضار به وزارت امور خارجه جمهوری اسلامی، با دادن پاسخی قاطع به مسئولين ايرانی، مواضع لندن را درباره حوادث اخير تکرار کرده است.
به گزارش خبرگزاری فرانسه، ديويد ميليبند، وزير خارجه بريتانيا، روز دوشنبه از «شجاعت عظيم» هواداران جنبش اعتراضی در ايران ستايش کرده بود.

براساس گزارش ها دو تن از دانشجویان، توسط نیروهای حراست دستگیر شده و به مکانی نا معلوم منتقل شده اند.

انشجویان سپس اقدام به تجمع سکوت کرده وبه سمت ساختمان ریاست حرکت کردند اما لباس شخصی ها به صورت سازماندهی شده تجمع را تعقیب کرده و دانشجویان را مضروب می کردند.
دانشجویان سپس در سکوت کامل به سمت ساختمان ریاست حرکت کرده و در اعتراض به هتک حرمت به حریم دانشگاه و ورود چکمه پوشان به حریم مقدس دانشگاه، روبروی ساختمان ریاست متحصّن شدند.
براساس این گزارش تعداد زیادی از دانشجویان بازداشت شده اند که از آنان خبری در دست نیست و تعداد دیگری از دانشجویان نیز مجروح شده اند.

Firstly let me thank you for your tireless work in bringing us all these upto the mintue information about the people of Iran's struggle against the tyranny they are under.

Your latest video is disheartening- At once we see the non violent movement and the opposing side readiness in using deadly force. Sometime I wonder if non violence here will not lead to greater loss of life and liberty. To look at it metaphorically, a gangrenous burst appendix will kill you if dealt with without the 'violence' of surgery.

Lets hope the folks who are using the non-violent methods have sufficiently  studied the strategies and techniques to be able to bring these bunch of murderers to their knees.

I pray for the people of Iran.

حسین شریعتمداری در سرمقاله امروز کیهان به شکل بی سابقه ای به رهبران معترضین پس از انتخابات حمله کرد و آن ها را با ابن سعد و شمر مقایسه نمود و با صهیونیست ها محشور کرد، شریعتمداری میر حسین موسوی را به برنامه ریزی برای قتل خواهر زاده اش متهم ساخت.
متن سرمقاله حسین شریعتمداری به این شرح است:
1-كاش از ميان بودجه هاي فراواني كه همه ساله- بخوانيد همه ماهه و گاه هرهفته- براي تشكيل سمينارها و همايش هاي رنگارنگ هزينه مي شود و بسياري از آنها تشريفاتي و كم فايده و يا اساساً بي فايده هستند، بودجه اندكي نيز به اهداي يك جايزه اختصاص داده مي شد.

Iran rally leaders 'enemies of God'

A representative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said opposition leaders were "enemies of God" who should be executed under the country's sharia law.
"Those who are behind the current sedition in the country ... are mohareb (enemies of God) and the law is very clear about punishment of a mohareb," Abbas Vaez-Tabasi, the representative of Khamenei, who possesses ultimate authority in Iran, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Under Iran's Islamic sharia law the sentence for "mohareb" is execution.
The statement coincided with rallies by tens of thousands of government supporters calling for opposition leaders to be punished for fomenting unrest after June's disputed presidential election, state media said.
