The Obama administration faces a puzzle in Pakistan, trying to figure out how to help the Islamabad government achieve greater stability without it granting too many concessions to Islamic militants who have supported Taliban forces challenging Western forces in Afghanistan. Washington also must balance its Predator military strikes a...with concerns that the violations of Pakistani territory and the violence that also kills civilians might cause more trouble than the attacks are worth.

I really enjoyed the Gore Vidal's piece. I appreciate Porter's work very much.

Gore Vidal was asked in a recent interview, what he thought Obama should do as his first taks as the President. I, as other corporate media brain washed persons, thought he's going to say the economy should be the first. But he said something which completely took me off-guard, he said Obama must "restore the Constitution" first. I thought that was COOL.

say the Afghan drug trade and refugee problem are crippling Iran. And they understand Afghanistan (and Pakistan) far better than the US does, Obama's clueless, and they know that and they don't really blame him either. But they're the only ones who can help. And Obama CANNOT get into an Afghan quagmire, in this economy and with his liberal base, and his own principles..and yes, I do think he has them...

and of course the Pak problem is part and parcel of the Afghan problem. Can't be separated. But I think it's a stickier wicket. Because Afghanistan's basically no country at all for the mostpart, whereas there's all these diplomatic and territorial constraints concerning Pakistan. The Afghan government WANTS help,they have NO other choice, Pakistan's a different story.
