Rights activists living in fear, warns Amnesty

Activists across the region, comprising 20 countries or territories, have been intimidated, harassed, and sentenced to long jail terms or death after unfair trials. Amnesty's report says the environment for human rights defenders has worsened since the US-led "war on terror", which has provided a pretext for many western-backed regimes to silence domestic dissent. Governments including Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia have cracked down on media and legal professionals. Amnesty says that although there have been some moves towards tolerance of criticism by civil society organisations, they have been largely symbolic.

"War on terror" has brought "War on rights"

by Paymaneh Amiri on

Passage of US' $75 million in aid to overthrow the Iranian regime has brought nothing but a crackdown on human rights, intellectuals, students, and NGO's in Iran.  A carte blanche seems to have been extended to IRI authorities to detain and persecute Iran's dissidents to their hearts' content.  An utter shame.

Mullahs will use any thing as an excuse to crackdown

by Not so fast (not verified) on

Mullahs were doing pretty well before this "war on terror" thing any way and did not need any excuse to crackdown on rights activists, NGOs, etc.

This just added one more to their list of excuses to crack down on people who do not see eye-to-eye with them.
