The Pope today reignited the controversy over the Catholic church's stance on condom use as he made his first trip to Africa.
The pontiff said condoms were not the answer to the continent's fight against HIV and Aids and could make the problem worse.

it's confusing and to MY mind,
by anonymous fish on Wed Mar 18, 2009 11:40 AM PDTcontradictory. his points about educating people are valid. his points about personal responsibility are valid. but that can not and will not address the specific issues of prevention!!!!! it is simply irresponsible (IMHO) to expect the public, especially in a country like africa, to practice safe sex without protection (condoms). the church's unwavering stance against birth control will continue to be the main reason the "fold" is declining. it was said somewhere that the pope is counting on the growing membership in africa to bolster a declining membership in the US. this ain't the way to do it.
the vatican MUST become more progressive if they hope to survive.

Why is it he says this, is it the whole birth control issue?

update
by capt_ayhab on Wed Mar 18, 2009 10:25 AM PDTFrance is criticizing comments by Pope Benedict that condom use is aggravating the AIDS problem in Africa.
A French Foreign Ministry spokesman, Eric Chevallier, said Wednesday that
while it is not up to France to pass judgment on church doctrine, it
considers such comments a threat to public health policies and the duty
to protect life.
