Iran in a crucial World Cup qualifying encounter in Tehran this afternoon. With the top two sides automatically booking their place at the finals, both nations wanted to avoid the third position which sees a potentially difficult encounter with the qualifiers from the Oceanic section. And it was Saudi Arabia who took the points this afternoon, coming from behind to seal the win. Osasuna midfielder Masoud Shojaei opened the scoring for Iran in the 59th minute, striking powerfully from the edge of the area, and at that stage they looked good value for their win. But in the closing stages, Saudi Arabia turned the match on its head to stun the partisan crowd. Naif Hazizi levelled the scores at 1-1 ten minutes from time, before defender Al Harbi glanced home with four minutes remaining to hand his nation a crucial 2-1 victory.

Pick up game?
by KouroshS (not verified) on Mon Mar 30, 2009 09:21 AM PDTshirzae
Good Job making up all these names... You obviously have not seen a pick-up game in your life! You missed all the great runs, all the great crosses, all the beatiful penetrations and techniques. All you want to do is to criticize. Go on. Learn how to watch and analyze it the right way.
Dear "Anonymous8",
by MiNeum71 on Mon Mar 30, 2009 08:40 AM PDT1) Thank you for your Bee Eh-te-ra-mee; I didn´t say that you are joke, I just said that sentence was, and you insult me personally.
2) At least you could learn to pronounce the names correctly: Michel Platini.
3) Daei scored his goals against Guam and the Maldives, Pele againt Italy and Sweden, Maradona against Germany and England, Platini againt Brasil and Spain. Are you seriously comparing Daei with Pele, Maradona and Platini?
3) Team Melli had its highest ranking in the world in 1977 (France Football), so stop lying. The FIFA ranking exists since December 1992, there is no way to compare.
4) Feel free to decide what is better:
*** Winning the Asian Cup three times in a row (1968-1976), or
*** One third place and two quarterfinals in the ACs (2000-2007)?
5) Team Melli qualified as the best Asian team 1978 for a 16 teams WC, 1998 and 2006 as the 4th Asian team for a 32 teams WC.
6) And: Even in the 80s (IRI!) Team Melli was better: 3./4./3. in the Asian Cups 1980-88. And 1990 (IRI!) it won the football tournament of the Asian Games.
These are all evidences, that the Team Melli was NEVER as weak as in this decade of its history.
No one defended Pahlavi, YOU started to politicise this topic. We love Team Melli regardless to the political circumstances.
Besides: You are not allowed to insult other people only because of their opinions. So stop that and respect the community members.
Anomynous8, How on
by Farhad Kashani on Mon Mar 30, 2009 06:49 AM PDTAnomynous8,
How on earth does Daei playing more International games make Iran a good team? Are you serious? Even a country like Maldives can have a player who plays in the national team for, let’s say 20 years, and break International record appearance! That record means NOTHING!!!!
You people never stop to amuse me with your foolish “logic”!!
Areh baba
by Seh Shod (not verified) on Mon Mar 30, 2009 05:59 AM PDTDaie is de best in the 'V'orld. Much better dan PELE, MARADONA and PELATINI. For egzample he single-handedly scored 5 goals against the giants of Vorld football Nepal and 4 each against other giants Guam and Laos.
PELE, MARADONA and PELATINI never did dat, did dey?
Where was Mehdi, the Imame Zaman?
by babak pirouzian on Sun Mar 29, 2009 02:00 PM PDTI read in a sport article couple of months ago, that Daei and the team went to one of the shrine, either it was in Mashad or in Qum before a major match,( either they were forced to or they did it by their own will), I did not follow it up if they won or not, but the points is, when regime interfere with sport, including selecting the coach or banning women to attend the games, something that clergies never understood or appreciated it ( from political and religious point of view,) and the leaders keep saying ,the country is run by Imame Zaman, and every aspect of our lives influenced by superstitions, instead of using the best coach, the best training as it's been done in all football guru countries including in Saudi, you do not expect anything better.
The Iranian as a nation must fire the entire regime and bury their constiution.
Sooooo...
by Ostaad on Sun Mar 29, 2009 01:54 PM PDTlosing a lousy football game qualifies as a reason for a change of government?!!!!
saudi is more islamic than iran.
by sports fan (not verified) on Sun Mar 29, 2009 01:16 PM PDTU seem to forger that saudi arabia is more islamic than iran by a million fold
Kashani don't sound so desperate...
by Anonymous8 (not verified) on Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:44 AM PDTiran's team in the past decade is the best in history.
iran's dai still holds the world record in scoring in international appearances, beating PELE, MARADONA AND PELATINI.
its cute how you desperately try to salvage some sense of pride from 30 years ago. it is only silly now, like Neum said.
people can be amused by you, but after a while they will feel sorry, so do yourself a favor and avoid that point.
Anonymous8, Please
by Farhad Kashani on Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:39 AM PDTAnonymous8,
Please do some more research. Iran won the Asian cup 3 times (never happened under this regime), made it to Olympics more times under Pahlavi than under IRI, made it to first U 17 and U 19 world cups, its clubs won Asian cups, and when Iran made it to WC in 1978, it was the only team from Asia and Oceania! Now, they have a combined total of 5 possible spots!! And in that world cup, they drew Scotland, a world power!
There are something you just can’t simply deny!
No, you are crazy Neum!
by Anonymous8 (not verified) on Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:13 AM PDTyou don't talk about the humiliating 4-1 defeat to PERU! in 76. Iran actually defeated a WC team for the first time in WC in 1998. iran has had its highest ranking ever in the past 10 years.
iran has appeared twice in WC under the IR, once under the shah, and it may happen again this year. iran has been doing steadily better so the only joke here is your own silly and ignorant defense of the forgotten shah.
its not related to politics.
Dear "Anonymous8",
by MiNeum71 on Sun Mar 29, 2009 09:16 AM PDTI wouldn´t say that Ahmadinejad is the reason for yesterday´s defeat, BUT:
1976 played great matches in the OG´76 football tournament, 1977 Iran played 1-1 againt the Argentina (world champion one year later), 1978 lost in France 1-2 as the better team after an offside goal in the last minute, and WC´78´s 1-1 against Scotland (without Rowshan), which was fav for winning the title, was a great performance.
Regardless to your political view writing Iran has never done as well under the Pahlavi dictatorship. is just a silly joke.
you guys are crazy!
by Anonymous8 (not verified) on Sat Mar 28, 2009 10:00 PM PDTthis has nothing to do with "islamic regime"... please!
Iran has never done as well under the Pahlavi dictatorship.
Sad But Expected
by Mort Gilani on Sat Mar 28, 2009 07:39 PM PDTIran will not make it to the World Cup 2010, but I hope these defeats accelerate the collapse of Islamic Republic. The Islamic culture of defeat is showing its ugly face in all aspects of Iranian life.
He did not even take a shower
by shirazie (not verified) on Sat Mar 28, 2009 04:18 PM PDTKSA played like a team and deserved to win. Iran again played like it was a Pick Up game and lost. KSA defeat of Iran is equal to Iran beating Israel in 1960's asian final. That game send Iran flying out of the gate for 10 years to only be stopped by the Ayatollah.
Ahmaghnajadi needs to take a shower, perhaps hose down. This man single handed destroyed Iran's Football Federation (IFF). Puts an ignorant and ill educated moron in charge. IFF Has not managed to get a single friendly for team Melli. all player fly in two days before from Europe, drink tea exchange stories and go into AZadi and do a big boy version of a PICK UP GAME.
the Iranian announcer on Fox Sport was saying KSA soccer is on a down slid???!! Get real - IRI football is finished. Enough of Iran football..
So from here we need to wait for our USA team to make it into World Cup.
We need regime change first before I football gets better
