Major General Abdul Ameer told [Persian] Gulf News that it was not Al Qaida's style to target Iranian pilgrims. "The terrorist organisation has been weakened to the point that they can't think in terms of carrying out such orchestrated attacks. They [Al Qaida] prefer to target the Americans and Iraqi security forces

come on , it's obvious
by Q on Sat May 02, 2009 03:11 PM PDTAl Qaeda isn't and never really was a big factor in Iraq. It was mostly hype to justify the invasion, plus some local punks calling themselves AQ to get noticed.
It was regular Sunni Iraqis. The real force in Iraq, has and always been the former Baathists, Sunnis and secular Saddamists. The media and Bush's government told everyone they were just a few "dead-enders" and loyalists, but they are a large population of middle to upper class Iraqis with resources and ties to other Arabs. Just like the wealthy Iranian class didn't go away after the Shah, neither did they after the fall of Saddam.
Of course US paid them off and even gave them weapons to keep them quiet in the past 2 years. So now they have a truce with the US troops but not the Iranians!
I wouldn't discount the MEK involvement either. The intelligence for these operations has to come from somewhere.
