Amid ongoing opposition to Iran's disputed election,...Mousavi says the vote and its 'bitter aftermath' have led to a "treasured achievement" for the nation. "There is a treasured achievement in the [post-vote] events," said Mousavi...The former prime minister, speaking to a group of youth on Tuesday, said the election had brought to surface "grave and complicated crises" facing the establishment 30 years after the Islamic Revolution. "These problems would not have been unveiled, if it weren't for the election," said Mousavi, whose credentials are well-known since the 1979 revolution. "This is a great achievement." The defeated candidate went on to say that the nation now fully feels the problems that were raised during the course of the election, Ghalam News reported. On the issue of protesters who face trial on charges of plotting to topple the government, Mousavi said that arrests of opposition figures and activists would not stop the movement opposing Ahmadinejad's re-election. "I noticed the birth of a strong national feeling during the course of the election... which has united different groups in the society," he said. "Some thought that by arresting several people who they believe are protest leaders, the whole story will be finished. But the fact is that this movement has stayed alive, showing that the arrests will not be effective.".
>>>There is a very interesting tidbit about Ahmadinejad's oil revenues...
and so the battle wages on...

Well, you see, part of the problem is,
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Wed Aug 05, 2009 04:46 PM PDTI can't READ the Reformist press directly, with my third grade Persian. (In fact I was just able to do my first Persian-language news post yesterday, from Amir Kabir Newsletter. I could understand enough of it to post the source instead of just the NIAC blurb with the link).
But that disadvantage has an advantage, because part of my role here is, and should be, to provide accessible ENGLISH-LANGUAGE sources to non-Iranians and to people of Iranian descent who may not read Persian either, on items which never reach the international press at all. Such as Moussavi's statement right here, which obviously he said (so obviously Press TV is NOT all lies...) If I could read fluent Persian, I would no doubt neglect that need.
But there are other things I am particularly interested in, like following the Arab and Asia-specific news sources in their analyses, and following the official IR line.
So, I agree. You do your thing and I'll do mine. There is obviously enough space in this menagerie to accomodate all types of animals on earth.
lol
Do as you please
by Patriot on Wed Aug 05, 2009 01:19 PM PDTby clicking on Press TV as much as you want Rosie. It is an organization funded by IRIB and having access to a wide range of news sources, I don't find anything they have to report original and new and worth the trouble. I don't click on Fars News either, nor IRNA.
Please remember that duing the protests in Iran, Press TV, much like the rest of IRI funded media, decided to act as though not much was happening in Tehran. This news blackout was so bad their staffers walked out. I don't trust ny "news" organization which opts to selectively report on the most significant news item of this year whether or not it was happening in Iran.
You may have time to read in between Press TV's lines, hoping to find some reformist's footsteps there; I just go to reformist papers directly.
Press TV.... what is Green?
by rosie is roxy is roshan on Wed Aug 05, 2009 04:54 PM PDTis a very complex organization, with many reporters and editors on the opposition taking great risk every day to get the news out the best they can. I have seen incendiary anti-Regime articles get published there and get deleted five minutes later. I have seen incendiary language get toned down. . I have seen others stay up in their original form. People fight very hard for these things.
A couple of days ago there was an item that Karroubi's paper, Etemade Melli, has been warned it will be closed, and the accompanying photo was a big picture of their July 1 front page with a huge headline, translated into English, that Karroubi is loyal to the Revolution unto death. Now you might not like to hear this from Karroubi, but it is extremely dangerous to the hardliner Regime for others to hear it.
You have to know how to read an article by Press TV WITHOUT PRECONCEPTIONS. You have to learn to look for what was obviously edited out, padded, what is put in quotes to question its credibility, double-meanings of titles, photos chosen, and so forth. But certainly, to be willing to do that, first you have to be willing to see that this article is a brazen challenge to the Hardliners.
This brings us to a semantic issue: when people say Press TV is the mouthpiece of the Regime, do they mean the entire Islamic Republic since its inception, or the hardliners? If they mean the latter, they are unqualifiedly wrong. I stake my life on that statement. If they mean the Islamic Republic as an entity itself, that should vary from employee to emplyee, however this is an entity with many different mouths. As someone in the Green movement, you have to accept that this movment is led by supporters of the Islamic Republic, and for the near future it shall be so. We can't do anything to change that, except to go with them for now and look toward the future patiently and realistically. Plenty of these people see the Islamic Republic as an intermediary phase toward secularism, Hajjarian has written about it for example. Actually, if you can't accept this, you are not Green.
Getting back specifically to the Opposition employees of state-owned Press T V. In many ways these people place themselves at far greater risk than others in defying the current Regime, overtly and covertly, because a) they are under constant scrutiny, and b) journalists is one of the most targeted groups. I have written about it a lot and I'm saying it again: My gratitude goes out to the members of the Opposition at Press TV.

If you want a stae-run press organization to love to hate, there are faaar better ones, from Fars to Kayhan. In any case, my feeling is that ALL should be 'clicked on' regularly. Whether true or not, the FACT of the official press saying something is itself the news.
Press TV should be boycotted
by Patriot on Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:28 PM PDTIt is the mouthpiece of Islamic Republic of Iran and NOTHING they ever have to say is correct or worthwhile. I don't click on their links and I don't watch their reports.
