Over the years, many have made the mistake of assuming the most important tools of a world statesmen are things like armies, rhetoric, white papers and press secretaries.

In fact they’re not. The most important instrument is in fact the humble shoe.

What follows is a timeline of this miraculous invention’s impact on world history.

Alexander the Great – In a little known fact Alexander’s march from Macedonia to India was only successful due to the appalling footwear technology of the natives of what is now Iran and Afghanistan. Having under-invested in appropriate research and development these luddites faced Alexander’s forces wearing a mix of hollowed-out bread loaves and stone clogs. They lost.
