US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".
The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.
Mr Obama's spokesman said the president was "humbled" to have won the prize. He said he woke Mr Obama up with the news early on Friday.

Giving this award to him was wrong and dangerous
by OmidKarimi on Fri Oct 09, 2009 04:33 PM PDTSupporting non nuclear proliferation,
Enhancing dialogue and negotiations between old foes,
Placing the UN in the center for solving world problems,
And taking the global warming threat seriously,
Is not something the president of the worlds strongest democracy should be rewarded for doing, but is to be naturally expected of him. The Nobel comite did something very dangerous here by seriously lowering the standards of this prize that usually has been given to individuals that have almost denounced violence out right.
Also by rewarding an administration that is currently engaged in warfare in central asia and the middle-east, they seriously obscure the meaning of what "peace" is, especially for the next generation. Torbjorn Jagland that led the group to give Obama this award sounded like he had smoked pot if you follow his reasoning and his press conference after the ceremony.

by yolanda on Fri Oct 09, 2009 12:44 PM PDTPaul Rogers, Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford in Britain, yet argues that the "unusual" decision by the Nobel Committee is going to encourage Obama to complete an unfinished process.
"It is certainly a surprise (but) the Nobel Peace is quite often awarded for what you might call process, things under way, rather than completed achievements."
"We remember the prize being awarded to Nelson Mandela and Frederik De Klerk in the early nineties, before apartheid had ended,"

I hope he can deliver his promises, a lot of promises!
thanks,
I agreed on another blog
by che khabar e on Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:37 AM PDTthat it is a little premature to award Obama. I have high hopes for his achievements but they are yet to be realized. And I understand the wishful sentiments for the people of Iran. But that's not what it's about. The prize clearly states:
"the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations,..."
And the movement in Iran isn't really about fraternity between nations. It's about freedom for Iranians. So while I support the movement 150%, I don't believe the Nobel Peace prize is really appropriate either.
I didn't get that Darius was being disrespectful of Obama getting the award. I just think that he's saying it's a little premature. I'm glad he got it, sure... but I agree that it's too soon to really see.
That again is based on the "actual" meaning and intention of the award.

by capt_ayhab on Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:26 AM PDTAs an avid supporter of Mr. Omaba, and as one who voted for him, and will again, I have bit of reservation about this award.
I do not mean to down play the honor and possible positive outcomes that might come out of this, but so far he has not accomplished anything to deserve such an honor, except some initiatives, which diplomacy instead of cowboy-ism.
I do wish him all the success, but I think Iranian women deserved the award collectively more than he did.

For every person who they've given the award to they have reasons for what s/he did in that year.
In 2009 Obama simply did more for the cause of peace than anyone else. More prominent, more important and more lives saved because of him. I don't know how many lives but even 1 is worth more than anything else.
The cause of peace in and of itself is most important and deserving than anything else in order to be able to get the recognition.

Are you drunk DK jaan?! What do you consider "accomplishment"?
by Anonymouse on Fri Oct 09, 2009 05:56 AM PDTWhat did Shirin Ebadi accomplish? Did she change the regime in Iran? She fought for human rights in a dictatorial regime just like the Thai women (I can never remember her name properly).
You can't change the mindset of America overnight, especially when trying to make major changes. Do you really think Obama is going to give up? Bush gave up his quest for Social Security change and stuck with his favorte agenda which was war.
In few months Obama has put peace, economy, healthcare and bunch of other things on the table. Some think it is too much and he'll fail. I don't. He has already accomplished opening true dialogue. He made Iran pull back on their position and eat their rhetoric. It's not a done deal but it has moved the dialogue among world powers and has put the focus on Iran.
So while you wait for actual, signed, sealed and delivered "accomplishments" he'll push forward and do things others haven't done before.
May I remind you that you yourself are fond of a Prince who has accomplished literally zilch and yet you find him good enough to lead a country. Not that there is anything wrong with it!
I don't want to write these long comments. Why don't you just give up and say okey dokey and we'll be done! ;-)

I mean If it wasn't presumptuous why would anyone even ask the Question ?
It obvious that we ALL Want Obama to Succeed. But Then Might as well give one to all who voted him in office ...
Its not much the fact of giving an Award to a President or World Leader in Exercise cause in the Past both Soviet Leader Gorbatchev ( Remember the Gorba Mania ?) and South African Reformist Apartheid President F W de Klerk ( who put an end to Apartheid) were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
But at least that was AFTER they Accomplished something of historical Proportion.
Obama Entered History as President and a Popular President by beating the War Mongering President Bush after a landslide Election. That is a Fact and an accomplishment for America. But what does that have to do with an Accomplishment for the World ?
Even France Sarkozy did more for Peace in Georgia during the conflict with Russia. Obama had hardly the time to take Oath as President. Neither was he particularly bold during the Gaza Conflict ( however personally I think he was Absolutely Right to remain neutral , contrary to all the HAMAS Tearjerkers on this site )
This is Down Right Ridiculous and personally I think even Obama is quite Angry for it is more like a Poisened Gift !
Had they awaited lets say a minimum two years after his election, we could see the results on the global economy or the Peace in the Middle East. But barely a few months after being in office? ...
Its even an Insult to Obama's intelligence honestly !
At Least they could have waited to see if he can bring peace to Afghanistan and leave the head High unlike Iraq !
Even That Idiot Bush deserves the Award more at this stage for Fighting AIDS in Africa. He did more than any World Leader or American President to date on AIDS. That was probably Bush's Only Major Contribution to Humanity but at least its on the record.
The Only Good outcome is that maybe he will have to do everything in his power to stop Israel from Attacking Iran. The Bad News is that We will be alone in our struggle against the IRI and Who can deliver us from an empowered IRI with an Atom Bomb at its disposal ?

by Anonymouse on Fri Oct 09, 2009 05:14 AM PDTWho else has inherited 2 wars and be the superpower of the world and tried to change course 180 degrees in direct contrast to his predecessor?
That SOB Bush clinged to war for 8 years. They give the peace prize to someone who has done something to bring "peace" either in his country or the world as a whole.
Obama may not have accomplished all he wanted in terms of war and peace but he has tried with Guantanomo, Iraq and we'll have to see about Afghanistan. Didn't he pull US soldiers out of Iraqi cities?
The best thing about this is the rage that Republicans and in particular their hezbollah faction will feel. They'll probably equate this to "cowtowing" to the world. They'll milk this as much as possible and it'll be interesting to watch them not Obama's reaction.
Everything is sacred.
Nobel peace prize awarded to Obama makes sense
by Anahid Hojjati on Fri Oct 09, 2009 04:52 AM PDTDarius wrote:"They Should have Awarded the People of Iran and Green Movement at large ( regardless of the leaders ) Instead for their Peaceful Demonstrations in Demanding Democracy and Human Rights for All ...". That was my initial feeling too but let's look at definition of Nobel peace prize:"...According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."[1]
If we go by above definition, Obama is totally deserving. Mehrdad also had a good point that maybe people of Iran should have received Nobel bravery prize. In any case, I am not unhappy with Obama's selection. Some years, award has been awarded to less deserving people.
