Iran is to transplant the world's first artificial windpipe on human by early February, said the President of Beheshti Medical Sciences University Mohammad Reza Razzaghi on Tuesday
The artificial windpipe is the first to use stem cells of the patient therefore it has no risk of rejection of the foreign tissue, he said.
Windpipe transplantation has not been done in any other country by now, he said and added, after Masih Daneshvari Hospital announced production of the windpipe, Spain claimed that it has managed to develop artificial windpipe but it was actually a bronchiole

Iran is a world leader in stem cell research
by No Fear on Wed Jan 20, 2010 06:27 PM PSTAlong with china, i might add.
When Europe and US were debating the moral implications and complications with stem cell research ( Bush never allowed or funded the research ), religous authorities in Iran ( Khamenei issued the fatwa ) allowed the research to take place immidiately. Iran started its stem cell research atleast 5 years ahead of most western countries.
Replacing a damaged windpipe with a new one using the patient own stem cells has never been done before. The operation in Belgium used another person organ and transplanted it in the patient.
Here is a good article for you maggots to read;
