At least 13 people have been killed in a bus crash on a remote mountain road in the Philippines.

The bus carrying as many as 70 tourists, mainly from Pakistan and Iran, plunged into a ravine on the central island of Cebu, police said.

The Filipino driver and at least two children were among the dead. There is no word on the nationalities of the dead passengers.

Many Iranian medical students were travelling on the bus, a survivor said.

The bus was on its way to a beach when the brakes failed, officials say.

About 40 people have been pulled from the wreckage alive.
