A Richmond Hill trucker has been imprisoned for smuggling about $2 million across the Canada-United States border.

Eskender Henareh Mafarani, 54, was sentenced last week to three years and one month in prison after being convicted of bulk cash smuggling and making a false statement to law enforcement agents, United States Attorney Barbara McQuade said in a statement.

Mr. Mafarani was arrested in November 2008 at the Windsor-Detroit border after he drove a commercial truck was stopped by United States agents.

Mr. Mafarani said he was delivering produce to the west coast and declared about $700 in cash, American authorities said at the time.

Unsatisfied with the answers agents sent the truck for another inspection, during which X-rays revealed an anomaly in the cab, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a sentencing statement.

A law enforcement dog pointed agents to the truck's interior, where plastic molding was removed from the area around the cab.

About $2 million in United States greenbacks and $1,120 in Canadian cash was discovered wrapped in 140 plastic bundles, the immigration and customs agency said.

Mr. Mafarani was found guilty in a Michigan court June 22, 2009 following a one-week trial, according to United States Attorney Terrence Berg.
