Iran Plans Massive Investment to Repel the Effects of Sanctions

Iran's has announced plans to invest $46 billion in oil refineries to make the country self sufficient.

Alireza Zeighami, Iran's deputy oil minister, said the country would invest the funds to develop and optimize the country's oil refineries. United Nations sanctions, he said, would not curb the refineries' construction.

The announcement comes as Iran's import of gas has nosedives as a result of a new round of UN sanctions. According to a report by Reuters, only three ships brought gas to Iran in July, as international traders begin to shy away from doing business in Iran.

"This is a hopeful stab at defiance against the sanctions regime being imposed on Iran," Rory Fyfe, an expert on the Middle East oil and gas industry with the Economist Intelligence Unit told the Media Line. "But it will be some time before we know whether the sanctions are having their desired effect."

The United Nations Security Council slapped a fourth round of sanctions on Iran last month, barring dealings with firms linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The Revolutionary Guard is a separate organization from the Iranian army and operates its own armed forces, navy, air force and militia. Its goal is to preserve the theocracy in Teheran, but over the years it has widened its scope and runs a vast business empire, ranging from construction to telecommunications.

Now this is called future planning! well, may be they were busy bribing india and other countries in between torturing and beating up the girls for bad hejab. After all refinery should be the last priority when you are in the middle of a life time sanctions! What a disaster this IRI is! They destroyed our beautiful country making us backward like arabs while arabs are passing us by!

the IRI is some sort of an advanced country that can actually "do things" on demand for the benefit of the nation.  Yes, they should "convert all cars to gas consumption as soon as possible".  They will bring in all the cars in Iran within one week, and through their advanced technology and "independently" invented know how, they will convert all engines in all the cars in Iran to natural gas operated engines.  LOL :-)))

well said MRX1.  This bunch of thieves would have invested in refineries long time ago if they could have AND wanted to.  They give not one crap about Iran, they spend their money paying their "base"- thugs like Hezbollah and Basij to beat up ordinary Iranians and do the dirty work for them, while importing gasoline at exorbitant prices and subsidizing it to buy off people.

Oil exports from Iran today are a fraction of before the revolution, despite very high oil prices today.  Soon Iraq will surpass Iran in terms of oil exports.  These are so embarassing for a country like Iran who has such huge oil and gas reserves, so much money and brains- but not to worry.  We have Islam and we are finding "our own" way without the help of foreigners, and are self sufficient.  Trying to "persuade the other side" to slowly transition more powers towards the people.  It is like trying to convince Hitler that Aryans can share power with non Aryans, or to not invade the rest of Europe.

IRR hasn't any investement and improvement in the oil sector in Iran  for the past thirty years and as a result oil poduction is falling lower and lower every year. (Actualy no thief will invest in the house he robbs from any way) what you have  is what is left over from the time of so called evil shah.

Nothing has been done, no refinery has been built, and none will be built. furthermore no one can account what has happend to all the oil revenue, specialy in the past four years where avergae barrel of oil was close to $100.0 plus dollars. In a nut shell there is no money to build these refineries!

This is yet another attempt to fool the  people......

iri has pursued nuclear energy for supposedly peaceful purposes for so long and it didn't occur to them that they should re-build their refineries.  they are re-importing refined oil at exuberant prices for how long now?  what took them so long?

if iran indeed has the know-how to beef up local refining capacity, there should be no major problem for the economy.

i heard that sepah pulled out of the pars gas construction deal a few days ago.

a plan announced a few years ago to convert all cars from petrol to gas should have been implemented faster. the failure to deliver on this goal can cost the country dearly.
