WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The U.S. took a step against Iran over its shipping, accusing the nation of using its national maritime carrier to advance weapons of mass destruction.
The Treasury Department on Wednesday announced the designation of 37 front companies allegedly linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.
Treasury said the action targets Iran's network of shipping and holding companies. The action "further exposes Iran's use of its national maritime carrier to advance its illicit weapons of mass destruction progam and to carry military cargoes," Treasury said.
"We will continue to expose the elaborate structures and tactics Iran uses to shield its shipping line from international scrutiny so that it can continue to facilitate illicit commerce," said Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, Stuart Levey.
