TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's official news agency has reported that the acting chief of the Iranian navy has participated in a meeting on piracy in which the U.S. Navy commanders were present.
The Thursday report by the IRNA news agency is the first public word that navy officers of both countries attended a meeting in Sri Lanka earlier this month on fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
The report says representatives of 22 countries including The U.S., Britain, France and Russia attended the meeting.
Iran has regularly opposed the presence of the U.S. Navy fleet in the Persian Gulf and the two countries have had no diplomatic ties since 1979.
