Tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators have defied a curfew and remain on the streets of Egypt's major cities, demanding President Hosni Mubarak's resignation.

The army warned that anyone breaking the curfew will be in danger. In Cairo, police have used rubber bullets and tear gas in clashes with protesters, but the army has yet to step in.

The BBC's world affairs editor John Simpson said having seen similar events before, he had never seen any leader come back from the level of hatred being shown towards President Mubarak.
